20/04/11 - Several new guides added

Cheers to everyone who sent in the edited image. I appreciate it, looks much better now
INTRODUCTION

Well Starcraft has been out for a while now, and as such people have had time to think out various strategies; the strategy forum being tantamount to this.

However the strategy forum has one major problem. Far too many people theorycrafting and posting worthless tactics/strategies because "hey, it works for my mate jimmy, so it must be the greatest strategy ever". That is not to say that there aren't absolutely awe inspiring tactics posted, indeed there are. The problem is that these posts/threads get lost within the deluge of new threads that get posted every day.

The aim of this thread is to try to address this issue. Basically the idea is that links will be posted below, to any thread deemed by the community to be outstanding enough to be considered required reading.

Obviously this is a very big undertaking, and I doubt I will be able to to do this on my own, so I hope the TL community will help by coming up with suggestions of threads which need to be included. So please, please, please, help me dig out the gems.

Also, I only play Terran and Zerg, so I will need help with Protoss in particular.

This thread is useful and needed, and you laid it out well (barring some unfinished tag issues that I'm sure you'll fix). You should definitely definitely link to MrBitter's stuff under Zerg.

I don't know if you want to link to them individually under respective matchups or just link his main thread as a single resource, either way all the urls are here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=177791

Thats what i thought when i saw it, but when i tried to edit i saw that the tag was correct. Its starting to annoy me as well because it looks so shit. Ive rewritten that part about 5 times, but it does the same thing every time. Apologies to everyone, but it will be sorted out once i figure out what wrong.

And cheers for the suggestions. Ill be editing the OP whenever I get a chance (ie. when my boss isnt on my back).

Keep them coming

edit: seems to have fixed itself, when i was writing this post. Either it was magic, or a mod fixed it. If it was a mod, cheers for your editing wizardry

This is a very good idea, thanks for starting it up. All the guides I had bookmarked are already posted but I have a suggestion. Put the game version the guide was written in next to its description in the initial post. I think this thread will be around for a long time and it is better to put the patch versions now rather than later.

Yeah of course I'm going to be adding more text. Like I said it's a work in progress, and there will always be strategies to add as the game is patched or when the metagame changes.

I'm not too sure what pictures you want me to put up. All this thread is doing is linking to the best strategies and guides on TL, so that it's easier to find them

Your PvZ header is messed up.

And I think pictures is unnecessary. You're just linking to other threads, so pictures would just be a huge space clogger and doesn't really serve much of a purpose for something like this. You should place more of the threads I linked into the OP, they're all solid builds for the designated matchup.

A TvX, ZvX and PvX sub header would be cool too for the more generalized build openers.

....man I wish I thought of this a long time ago xD

I really wouldn't recommend most guides for protoss or terran here. Unfortunately, most guides here are either people trying to put their name on a gimmicky build, outdated, or both. It's a much better idea for players to learn solid fundamentals through standard, common builds. With this in mind, here are the only Protoss threads that I would recommend currently:

PvZ:
Incontrol coaching: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=182108

both PvZ and PvP:
4 gate: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=177569

PvT:
incontrol coaching: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=188418

Also I think players of every race needs to see MrBitter's stream and VODs. IMO they are more important/helpful than any other resource out there.

Got to disagree with you there mate. There are some very effective builds/guides on TL. Im just trying to mine out the gems. Cheers for the suggestions though.

Come on TL I need more suggestions if this thread is going to become worthwhile

dunno how everyone feels about this, I think Excalibur_Z threads on ladder/division analysis might be helpful, though this skews this more towards the faq side, thoughts?

Great thread! I made a post a while back that catalogued the advice I could find from the pros. You can find it here. Definitely add Tyler's advice about countering 4 gate in PvP! It's a great thread.

Great thread, should be stickied IMO (or whatever it's called you know it stays up like the ''appeal to the community'' thread). Then we can say look at the recommended threads thread to people who are ''unable'' to use the search function.
BTW under TvZ you called it the Marinr/Raven.

Anyway, cheers for the suggestions. Keep them coming.

I can vouch for:

Anihc's PvZ 15 Nexus Guide

It's a solid opener especially on maps with long rush distances or with more than one spawn location. You can easily get away with a Nexus before Gateway and if you scout an early pool, fast forge with a couple well placed cannons will have you covered. Excellent for those who want to get every possible economic advantage.

Z-Z - Three different builds
Taken from Machine coaching session with Mr.Bitter

A Comprehensive Guide Zerg Macro Efficiency

I think it would be better if you kept to the thread title and limit yourself with the threads in TL. Delete all the Mr.Bitter and Day9 vod links and just put in their corresponding TL thread links maybe. If you end up trying to put all the Day9 vods, it will be far too complicated to navigate through the list anyway. Those vods have their own organizations but the TL threads are the ones hard to find.

Just my 2 cents.

Agreed, could use a little bit of cleaning up (checking links to see that they go to the proper locations, typos etc.), but it's definitely as awesome resource to have here on the strategy forums.

I think this should also link to the Strategy Forum Highlighting thread:

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=193846

This will help newer members to see the quality posters out of the Strategy forums community and glean a little bit more information out of some posts rather than be misinformed by a stubborn gold level player who thinks if it worked in the GSL, it must always work.

I think I have most of the newbie Tuesday dailies handy on a note card, will put up links later. I think adding them from oldest to newest or vice versa will help people choose which ones may or may not still be relevant. Also, most of these dailies have an overarching concept that will never die unless a unit gets taken completely out of the game, so they should be used in a thread like this.

From Newest to Oldest:
#261 Mechanics: Viewer FPOV Critique
#257 Refining Mechanics
#252 Intro to Mechanics
#228 Dealing with Banelingz
#224 Fighting an Early Expand
#205 Dealing with Colossi
#201 Using Drops
#198 Banshee Harass
#194 Drone Timing
#189 Losing to Early Pressure
#184 Common Mistakes from Bronze to Platinum
#164 Low Level Decision Making
#163 Gold League: Fixing the Little Things
#132 The Mental Checklist
#121 Plugging Leaks in Silver Level Play
#116 Learning from a Loss
#110 Dealing with Losing

He also has stuff for Drone Timing as Zerg, etc if you also want that. I've watched every daily atleast once, sometimes twice.

Zerg:
#242 Simple ZvZ Build
#235 ZvZ Opening Builds

Is there a good thread that helps newer players with early scouting. Such as a comprehensive list of when you scout if you see XX then it is likely your opponent is going YY etc.

I struggle with picking up on what protoss are going to do when i scout.

Well new builds are coming out everyday, so it wouldn't really be practical to make a list of EVERY build. I think Day9 did an Episode talking about how you group by what you see. The three categories he had were Tech Heavy (taking two gas usually or scouting higher tech structures at the front), Early Expand (usually 1 or no gas with a small amount of units at the front to prevent you from scouting) and Early Pressure/Agressive Style play (Usually 1 or no gas with mutiple barracks/warpgates early on with little to no tech on 1 base).

Basically Day9 would say he has to commit to one of those paths, so if he is really aggressive with 2 or 3 barracks against you low tier units, he probably can't get an expansion up without the push failing miserably and he can't be doing fast cloak banshee tech because of lack of gas.

No zaffy, i dont think that thread exists. I think it would be a good idea though mate. I agree demonace, it wouldnt be practical to have all builds, but common ones would be useful.

Anyway, fake 3 gate robo, BOX tactics and diamond on macro alone added. Cheers to stoggos and cecilsunkure for the suggestions.

I still need peoples help with the possible inclusion section. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I dont really want to do that mate. All the threads i'm recommending are the best ones on TL, regardless of who the OP is. I dont really want to have two tiers of recommended threads. I think theres going to be other things implemented which should make it easier to find highlighted users posts.

Cheers for the suggestion though

Awesome thread, incredibly necessary. Needs to be sticked.

I'm a fairly new player, and I found one of the last dailies of day9 probably (one of) the most useful:

Does anyoone have a protoss banner? Got 1 for zerg and terran, but need one for protoss before I add them. Should help split the sections a bit, and might make it easier on the eye. Or it might look shit, who knows......

Your MrBitter thread says ZvZ in the ZvT section, the:

Mr Bitter's ZvZ Infestor Play
Skip muta's for quick infestors

Once again great thanks for doing this it's a really great thread.

Edit: hit quote OP instead of edit

Added banners.. Cheers to hellsan361 for those. I realise there is a typo in each of them (stratigy, not strategy). Have Pm'd him so hopefully this will be changed soon. Or if anybody can d/l the images and adjust them for me i'd be grateful. Wouldn't know where to start myself

This thread is starting to morph into something really nice but if you really want to be pedantic, Recommended is also misspelled.

Also, a general mechanics section would be nice for chronoboost/mule/larva inject/macro stuff.

Lol, i know mate. Synystyr pointed it out at the bottom of the last page. Embarrassing for me seeing as part of my job is copy writing and proofreading

edit: good idea mate. Will add this at some point.

More guides added to OP:
1/ Kcdc's 1 gas 2 gate robo
2/ Synystyr's 2 rax FE
3/ Excalibur's latest ladder analysis (what do you think i should do with the other 2? Delete them? Create obsolete section? or jus leave them?)

Extremely well thought, thanks for such a high quality post, mofisto.

I'll take a look and post the most interesting threads when I have a few minutes, but seriously, I think most of them are already up there.

I updated the text of the PvT FE guide. It hadn't been touched since a month or two after release, so I figured it was about time.

This thread is great. I'll be bookmarking it for sure. I was wondering if any of the following might be doable?

1) This thread could be stickied?
2) The mods could create a sticky version of this thread that is curated by the site admins?
3) This sort of functionality could be baked into the forum itself vie some sort of special tag for the best posts?
4) There could be a separate forum for "promoted" threads, where only the best threads get moved by the mods?

I guess I'd love help separating the wheat from the chaff because there is a lot of chaff.

3/ 3 gate sentry expand

Thanks to Cecilsunkure, ebos, khaladas for the suggestions. Saracen, nice one mate. You got any opinions on the other threads?

This is a cool thread, I appreciate the effort. Deserving of a sticky for sure.

Also, I would absolutely one-hundred-billion percent recommend Ver's "How to Improve". It is absolutely the best thing that ever happened to my play/thought process and I think it is the guide all other guides should be aspiring too. It is a BW guide, but besides a few things, it is SOO applicable to Starcraft2 and I believe is definitely deserving of a spot. That guy is such a baller.

great post, bookmarked.

how about some more basic links for the race-specific strats? i guess what i mean is the "standard" strats....

example:

TvT - Marine/Tank/Viking
TvZ - Biomech
TvP - Bio with Viking/Ghost

PvP - 4Gate (just a comprehensive 4gate post would be a good starting build for PvX i think really)
PvZ - Forge FE

etc etc

looking for links now

Updated the OP with the "how to improve" pdf. I know its a broodwar guide, but after reading it, many of the sections are applicable to sc2. Cheers for the suggestion arisen.

Lenjurk, I'd love to include threads on those strategies. The problem is ive not found any guides about them, bar liquidpedia. If you find any let me know.

I totally support this. I've read Ver's guide several times, when I started playing sc2 and it helped me so much. Especially It develops a wider game sense. Although for SC:BW I think It's still one of the best TL posts.

Added "how to play when you are ahead or behind". Not 100 percent where it should go. Put it in basic for the time being.

Also added a guide to the feedback section: protoss shield upgrades. Let me know if it should be a part of the main guide.

Finally, what do people think i should do with obsolete guides? Delete them or create an obsolete section?

Theres a lack of TvT strats as well mate. If you have any links to more "unoriginal" guides, let me know mate. If you post the links I'll be able to have a look. Ive not found any yet though, and ive spent the past few weeks trawling through the strat forum.

Good job on this thread. Thank you for gathering informations.

Once upon a time i made a guide about Banshee play in TvP, the difference with Synystyr's one is about the expo timing, i go for a late cc. Maybe it can help for a global approach, idk:

Took me ages to refind this thread as well mate. Very useful read.

More updates to the OP:

1/ No queen fast expand roach
2/ The real cost of terran units
3/ 3 gate aggressive expo

Got more updates in the next few days. Quite a few new threads over the last week and not had a chance to read them all yet.

Wow, are you serious...

I just finished another thread analyzing Zerg openings that I put many hours into and has even better stats and graphs to back everything up but it's getting lost under marauder cheese and a fast carrier build so I just might be wasting my time here...

EDIT: Oh well, guess it couldn't hurt to suggest it to OP.

PvT Liquid'Tyler's Double Forge Play

This isn't necessarily an opening, but it does provide a transition from any robo-oriented opening into an upgrade-centric PvT playstyle.

Though a bit outdated (discussed speedrays), it is still a good, mainstream, and rage-inducing protoss strategy.

Perhaps you could swap out the common important timings thread with this one?

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=202400

The former hasn't been updated in a long time and suffers from inaccuracies. I made this thread to try to remedy those issues.

I would vouch against this. It doesn't give the player much of an offensive option in ZvP, and seems a bit risky against early stalkers due to the Protoss being able to do whatever they want, and delays tech by a considerable amount of time. However, I don't know anything about zvz or zvt.

Your new link to "How to Improve" is actually linking Tyler's double forge (same as the link above it). Just wanted to let you know. Thrilled that you're keeping this updated!!!

I vouch for blade's guide here:

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=210354

It's essentially a more up-to-date version of the art of ZVP. Blade wrote a quality ZvZ 15 hatch update and this thread follows suit with a very good, very standard method of ZVP.

To add to Kogut, the link for MrBitters 12 weeks with the pros is a link to page 7 on this thread?

Heres the correct one:

i think the no gas expand, to mass queens -> infestors -> ultras seems like a pretty good way for zergs to go against deathballs n terran bio/mech. would be nice if these threads were added in as alternative builds for people to learn.

Keep up the good work =)

In the 'Newly Added' section of the OP, the 'PvT 2 Gate Fast Obs FE' and '2 Gate Fast Observer' links both give you the same guide: PvT 2 Gate Fast Obs FE by CecilSunkure. Brilliant though it is, I don't think it warrants two separate links. (~_^)

How about posting a 1/1/2 banshee opening in the Terran strats section, instead of just the 1/1/2 hellion drop?
And also it doesn't seem like there's anything standard in the TvZ section, like a rine/hellion harass into ? opening (I really don't know much about the MU so... I could use more in that section)

Regardless, awesome thread! I'm glad this got stickied

Other two matchups? I plan to kinda write guides of super standard play every now and then. I teach lessons and find that through teaching these standard styles I end up with a few pages of notes. I enjoy writing / sc2 so its a good outlet.

I am not going to just crank them out though. I will make sure to do TvP or TvT next whenever I get around to it.

I have a question in regarding the amount of TvZ threads that are recommended.. is that really it?..
Theres a bundle of TvP strats but only 2 in TvZ and 1 in TvT. looking at the other races, the amount of Terran strategy is kinda sad. Its insanely hard to get good builds for TvZ so will someone prove me wrong?

lol, I know I know, it does need updating. Ive just been very busy over the last couple of months with my new job. Not even played a game in that time, so finding a day to go through all the threads and then update this one has been tough. An update will be coming at some point though.

blade i hope thats sarcastic lol, i spent 3 months updating it almost daily

Tabbris nothing stopping you doing some of the legwork and helping me find the threads that need to be included.

To everyone else, thank you for the suggestions, im not ignoring them, and they will all get included soon.

If anyone thinks that they would ike to help further, id be happy to share my account so that the thread can be updated on a more regular basis. (dont know if i'd be allowed to do this though)

I'm glad I finally noticed this thread lol.

I was wondering if anyone could direct me to the new protoss styles in PvZ - the blink/templar style and the expand->stargate build.

I'm still doing the 3-gate robo, and I guess that's out of date? It does seem bad against roach-ling all ins on certain maps.

Thanks

Eh why not updating this tool? I think several guides are a bit old now (some guide from Sheth dating back to beta days for instance), while some new ones would deserve a place there...

I am saying this because I think it could be a really useful and major reference if updated regularly

I know it implies some work, but it would be really nice!

I am definitely willing to take my part of the job, if people consider I am competent.

I'd like to recommend this thread for TvZ inclusion. That section is pretty barren right now, and this guide is nothing short of amazing in depth and quality of information:

I would like to recommend this thread as well. A very comprehensive TvZ guide that is constantly updated.

no. reason why i hate this thread is cause the OP went missing shortly after this thread was made.

Thank you so much, this thread is amazing. You should probably list your own thread in the OP.

Can anyone update this thread? Not sure what happened to the OP.

Or if possible, can I create a new, updated SC2 recommended threads?

I doubt a mod will read this but I would do it if you think you can keep it updated and make it look nice and organized I say go for it I don't see why anyone would frown upon it when this thread hasn't been updated in a long time

I don't mind updating it whenever possible.

The only problem is if it's okay to a moderator for me to make a new SC2 Recommended Threads since this thread is already stickied.

Is there any "standard" opening that works on all maps for PVZ (because the 3 gate sentry expand seems like it is "out of date" and a new standard opening needs to be worked out).

Does anyone have advice on a good PVZ standard opening that can work on any map? I want to try to stick with one build until I get into masters, that is why I ask. Also, a build order [G] would be helpful for this as well.

For everyone who struggles with ZvZ (one of the most intense matchups), http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Destiny's_ZvZ_(vs._Zerg) is awesome and works about 80-90% of the time in high gold/plat...

Blade, you're right, dont really post anymore, or play anymore either. Still lurk sometimes though.

Nrgmonk, it does need updating, but im not going to be doing anything in future, Takes far too much time, and to be honest I cant really be bothered updating a guide thread for a game I no longer play. I had planned on an update a couple of months ago, but when I asked people for help finding threads (not kept up with metagame, so wouldnt know what works anymore) I got all of a handful of suggestions from the thousands who viewed the thread. If no-one else could be arsed helping me, i'm not prepared to spend days helping others. THis isnt aimed at everybody by the way, I got a lot of help from a several people, and to them I am very grateful. Without them the thread would not have even been started in the forst place.

I spoke to codeskye a few weeks ago and he said he wanted to take over, but ive not heard anything from him since I sent all the "code"(not the right word I know) and copy. Unless Ive missed his new thread, I doubt that he is going to do anything now.

If anybody wants my password, I would be willing to share my account with somebody who would be prepared to continue with the thread. Just let me know.

Awesome mate. Good luck with it. I would send you all the "code" and copy, but it looks like I cant edit the original post anymore, so cant copy and paste. I'll speak to mani and see if he can do it for me.

I don't know what code you're talking about. Do you mean the thing you get when you "quote" the OP? If so I have that. This is what I have so far and it's pretty much done.

Yeah I know code isnt the right word mate, just all I could think of as a description.

Oh, I was being a little simple, forgot you could simply quote it.

Pretty much finished? good stuff mate, look forward to seeing it.

I think the list lacks "standard" builds. When a noob comes to TL I would recommend him to learn to play standard, and the list is basicly anything besides that (4 OC and marines ravens are nice builds for TvZ but certainly not the best to learn the game from for a beginer). Some "standard play" threads will be nice or links to liquipedia if there are no good threads on that account. Also it would be cool to see how standard play evolved with a list of former "standards" for an MU.
