often when I'm playing a game of starcraft 2 something will come up in real life: the phone or the doorbell will ring, the baby will cry, my mouse battery will suddenly die, etc etc.
Usually it's just a small thing and I need a pause for 10-60s. But some people just turbo-unpause whenever you pause. Obviously this is an autolose for you, not very fun, and really just sort of sad. Sometimes when I say something about it, they call ME bad mannered for pausing.
I did notice, however, that if you chat with people at the start of the game, they're much more likely to allow a pause. Same if you take a few seconds to explain first.
One unfortunate thing is that people have a real tendency to snap-unpause if you pause in the middle of a big battle, especially if it involves any sort of 'cheesiness' like banshees or DT or a zergling rush.
Any other ideas for improving your odds of being allowed a pause?
Anything interesting to say on the subject?
Any defense on the part of the unpausers?

imo never pause whatsoever in a big battle. something about it just doesnt seem right.

Ye ask first, othervise they think your just doing it to piss them off.

Just ask or explain in as few words as possible, ie 'brb 1 sec phone, soz'.
Basically just be manner, wont always work but significant increase in probability.

I've never really thought that un-pausing was bm, even if it is annoying. If something comes up that can't wait until the end of the game, then your opponent shouldn't have to wait for you to finish it. It's nice of people to wait, but I hate waiting for someone and they take 5 min or something.

This is so simple yet so effective, i dont mind a slight pause if its a good game, but you should really ask about it first, there are so many people that will pause and then not write anything. Should we just proceed with waiting without knowing what has happend? I believe its BM to pause and not say anything

You could try to be friendly at start of the game, say glhf ect. You should also ask if you can pause/explain why you need to. If someone just randomly pauses I'll usually give them 15-60 seconds depending on how good a mood I'm in and if they have been mannered so far. If they say something id give them a good few minutes.
Remember, they are under no obligation to let you pause. It's as much their game as it is yours, they don't have to waste their time waiting, especially if it's for an indefinite amount of time without a request.

The only time I unpause is when
a) they just had their banshees/dt's detected and said units are about to die, and they pause without giving a reason
2)I've quite obviously won the game already, and they are just trollpausing (unfortunately have run into this like 20 times -.-' )

If they pause it without saying anything I ask whats up? And if they Don't say anything within about 10 seconds I just unpause.
If they explain themselves I will wait up to 5 mins for them to get back, because I don't have all day to wait.

Anyone who snap unpauses is a total douchebag no ifs ands or buts. Total dick move. There is nothing wrong with pausing and briefly explaining why, you don't need to explain or ask before you do it that's just retarded. On the flip side when people pause without explaining it can be very irritating, especially if you're clearly about to win or just caught your opponent out in a cheese. I normally ask politely when someone pauses why they paused, and if I get no response in 30 seconds or so I will unpause, but if they tell me really quickly or simply say brb 1 min, just so I know they didn't accidentally pause/quit then I am happy to wait.
EDIT: TBH Blizzard really should do something about it. If you need to fix your hotkeys or a key got stuck on your keyboard you should be able to pause and quickly fix it without any problem. Since you have 3 pauses, if Blizzard could make it so that once a player paused the game, no other player could unpause for 10-15 seconds that would help a lot.

Don't pause. Pausing at all is BM IMO.

Yeah this is exactly what I do. I've only had to unpause once, and I sent the guy at least three "If you're not back in two minutes I'm unpausing" messages before I did so.
If someone just paused without saying anything I'd unpause after 20 - 30 seconds.

I've never actually had someone unpause on me, even when I have to run downstairs and take 2-3 minutes.
Pretty amazing.

I never get into a situation where I need to pause in a ladder game. If I get a phonecall, I ignore it and call back after the game, If I am expecting visitors I will not ladder (and i'll ignore the door if I am not expecting people), although I cannot comment on having a child cry as I do not have one.
Random pauses are annoying and can throw people off their game. I am not one to unpause, but I do find it rude in that I can set aside some time to get my IRL stuff sorted for a session of ladder games, and my opponant doesn't have the foresight to do the same.

I'm fine personally with people pausing as long as they ask first otherwise I view it as bm and immediately always unpause and get back to playing. Unless your all high level or masters league even I feel pausing unless changing settings is a little rude since just leaving the game wont kill your record or something, otherwise get your stuff together before you play...that might just be me though lol.

I always give people the benefit of the doubt for a few minutes if they give a reason.

^^I agree.
i dont like to pause unless i absolutely have to (police are at my door, im on fire, etc). But as far as phones, friends, or family, i ignore it until after the game. Worst case scenario, I run realy quick but dont pause.
When I get paused on, ill wait a min or two, then unpause. I mean, idk whats goin on his end, so if his dog just died id feel bad just unpausing on him, yknow?

Only time I have refused to let the guy pause is he BM'd me a lot at the start about how toss is the easy race, he then said pp phone and I just refused. He then left and called me sad.
I am not going to be nice to someone who is a total arse to me to begin with.

Now that's commitment.
