If they just unpause then I just leave. Ladder isn't serious business at any level. Most of the time (2/3 times I've had to do it) the person messaged me that they felt bad for doing it.

Hahahahaha, me too. I never really understood why someone took their own ladder time SO seriously that they can't just chill for 10-20 secs while you take care of something.

"BUT OMFG, MY TIME TOO, SO DAMN VALUABLE, DON'T LADDER THEN." Be realistic and grow up. Some of us have lots of things going on. If my dog implies that he needs to piss, you better believe that I'd rather you chill for the 20 secs it takes me to let him out than have to clean that up. If I just spilled my beer, I'm not playing with that all over the front of me.

If your time is as valuable as you claim go play some game where you don't have to worry about other people wasting it at all. Like Solitaire.

I guess you've never dealt with troll pausers then? There are many times on ladder, where I'll be winning a game, and the opponent will pause without explanation, just to try to annoy me. I don't see anything that could be so urgent, you couldn't take the time to write "brb 1 min" or something like that, to let me know that you are in fact leaving your computer and are coming back, not just being juvenile.

Sure. But they only got 3 pauses and what's the big deal?

Also, everyone is assuming I'm just gonna pause and walk away. brb or one sec is pretty much a given I'd assumed, but apparently not.

For some reason I can't chat when the game is paused, atleast not when I've paused it, it's really annoying because I can't ask if my opponent is ready after I'm back -.-. any ideas what the problem might be? I always feel so BM when I have to unpause and then ask if he's ready lol....

I think you have to exit the menu first after pausing, after which you can chat normally. This will not unpause the game. btw, you can also pause and unpause with the 'pause' button on your keybord.

General manner rule: ask first, and make sure they are ready before restarting.

I had a phone call from my landlord the other day during a ladder game (I usually just check who is calling and ignore if its not something important) but I had been waiting on this call all day. I asked pp before I paused and explained what was up while I answered the phone, apologized when I was done (took about 2 min) and asked if he was ready.

Luckily he was cool about it

I have to agree with the people who unpause. It isn't your job to wait for them. You committed your time they should do the same.

"you committed your time they should do the same"

cool, lets apply this logic elsewhere!

"I cut of your left hand, you cut of mine, oh wait! I was born without one! I guess you will lose your hand but I won't! fair trade right?"

"we should pay the same amount of taxes, but wait, your income is a fifth of mine! LOL not my problem!"

"I as zerg didn't build any army units for 20 minutes, you as terran should show me the curtesy to do the same."

"Hey! you killed 40 of my workers, thats not fair because you didn't invest 40 workers into that attack!"

see where I am going?

Nope. You gave us 4 weird examples that didn't make any sense, and had nothing to do with holynorth's view of commitment.

Improving odds? How about being nice and polite to people when asking them to freaking wait for you? Acknowledging that they're giving up their time for a total stranger should be enough to at least think of it differently than just "improving odds"; that honestly seems extremely rude and unreflected.

Besides, if Im ahead, why would I want to let my opponent pause and let him regain mental stamina and possibly come op with a new plan? It changes the balance the game in such situation.

At the end of the day, rude people are gonna be rude, and no matter how much you chat them up they still will unpause if they're one of those people. You just need to take it in stride, and remember that alot of people will give you a pause provided you ask first.

Ask them first, just say, 'pause 10 secs please?' and wait for a 'kk' before you pause.

Whenever someone pauses randomly, i snap hit the unpause button.
If they ask first, then I let them pause it for up to 5 mins.

Also, I'd suggest letting other people pause. If you let them pause, say 'sure thing, so long as you do it for the next person that asks'. There isn't a person on earth who can play without 100% ever needing a pause, and if you pass that on, then everyone will let everyone pause (eventually :} )

This is so simple yet so effective, i dont mind a slight pause if its a good game, but you should really ask about it first, there are so many people that will pause and then not write anything. Should we just proceed with waiting without knowing what has happend? I believe its BM to pause and not say anything

Exactly, if someone pauses and doesn't say anything before or after 5 seconds I unpause. Just a "sec please" is more than enough.

I'm surprised this thread went 15 pages long. No offense but really?

Wouldn't you just pp and pause? If the guy isn't willing to then too bad? It's only one game of the many that you'll be playing and if you lose, so be it.

The way I see it is you definitely don't have to let a person pause more than a few seconds. If the other person doesn't want to pause too bad its online game make sure you have time to play one or just back out.

I would usually only wait a couple minutes and then I unpause, Its not my-concern what my opponent is doing and its not my responsibility to wait for him to finish whatever he is doing.

I usually give people a couple minutes. After that, I'll just go kill them.

I'm against pausing except in extreme cases. I never unpause b/c that is worse... but I hate pausers. If they explain what's up first, I can stomach it, but without that I am going to be annoyed. Why? I take the game seriously, and it seems pausers do not. I get the impression some people pause every other game. That is ridiculous.

I'm just going to take your examples:

the phone or the doorbell will ring,
a. They can leave a message if it's the phone. If it's critical, you need to quit out and get to the critical phone call.
b. If it is unexpected company, they should have showed up unexpected. If they are there to occupy your time, you should quit out and give up b/c you can't play properly after they come in anyway.

the baby will cry,
a. OK, I have kids and I know there is no way around this. Sometimes you are taking a break from the kids and the kids suddenly freak out or whatever. I can't complain, because there is nothing you can do about this. Kids = chaos.

my mouse battery will suddenly die, etc etc.
a. Never use a wireless mouse for gaming. #1 reaons, the battery may die.

But naturally, I'd rather more ppl play and pause than not play... so do what you must. But you'll just have to accept that pausing ruins the game for some people, and they will only tolerate so much.

IMO, if someone pauses, regardless of the reason and how they explained it, you should not be expected to wait. If you pause, then something in your life that matters is happening, and you shouldn't rush through it just so you can get back to the game. Seriously, it's only a loss. However, if the other person is really nice, then that's great and all. I just really don't see how waiting through pauses should be common courtesy, it's more of a thing friends (or just really nice people) do.

If it's a ladder game I autounpause no matter how good your excuse is because time is precious. If it's a custom game then I have no problems with the other player pausing as long as we're on friendly terms.

If it's something important and needs to be answered right away, odds are taking a ladder loss is worth it.

I normally say "Can I pause for a sec please?" 99.9% they're fine with it.

If it's important enough to pause then it's important enough to forfeit the game if they don't want to wait on you.
