Well, here's one way to think about things:

I play Starcraft to have a fun and interesting game against challenging human opponents. I like to test myself and my ideas and my execution. And I like to see how things play out, for example, if I make a mistake at 6:00, will I be screwed at 7:00? If I micro well, will I win this battle, or is it hopeless? Let's find out!
Now, sadly interrupting the fun, something in real life happens. I don't expect it, you don't know what it is, it just happened and it requires my attention.
So, either I pause and you allow the pause, wasting 10-60s. Or I pause, you unpause, and I leave, wasting the entire length of time that we've already played. I mean, we went through 15:00 of a great game and soon enough we'll see the conclusion; you'd rather throw that away than wait a few seconds?
When you think about it this way, the reason I'm pissed when you refuse to allow the pause, is that you're wasting my time and yours by choosing to ruin a perfectly good game rather than wait a few seconds. Not to mention I think you're a total no-class bum with no sense of sportsmanship or courtesy.
I would never, ever unpause without at least asking for an explanation and waiting a bit, both because of common courtesy, and more importantly because I don't want to ruin the game for myself (or you). Do people really get more satisfaction from beating an afk person (ladder points, yay!) than they do from playing a good game?

tl;dr
You ought to allow pauses because waiting for a pause is better than wasting the entire length of time the game has gone on so far.

This, all of this. The "don't pause just leave" argument is total nonsense because of what Keilah says here. Why would I throw away 15 minutes worth of game because I need to spend 30s-1minute answering the door? Why would my opponent want me to do the same?

You've already invested time into the current game. Why unpause and ruin 2, 3, 15 minutes or whatever for the sake of a brief break?

I envy those who have so little responsibilities that they don't have a brief IRL interruption now and then. Yes - I could leave the game, but for the sake of a 1 minute pause, I'd quite like to be able to continue the game I've already invested 10x that in, and I'd think and hope the opponent would too.

Unless you give me a damn good reason to pause before actually doing it, you bet your ass I'll be insta-unpausing. Crappy reasons like "my phone's ringing" don't cut it. Don't play if you can't handle giving someone a call back 5-10 minutes later. Taking a pee break doesn't cut it. Pee before you click start, or be a man and hold it in for 5-10 minutes. Especially don't pause it to "get a drink" or "get a snack". Absolutely unacceptable.

If your house is in danger of being set on fire, sure, explain it to me and pause.

I'll sign this.

If you start a game you have the spare time to finish it.
If something important comes up, go fix it. but don't expect me to wait while you do your laundry or call your boss. Just GG and leave, don't pause.

I snap unpause no matter what. It's my prerogative and I don't think I have ever paused in a game. I'll be honest, if I think it will give me a slight edge to win the game, that is even more incentive.

I have to agree with the people who unpause. It isn't your job to wait for them. You committed your time they should do the same.

It would be cool if blizzard implemented a 10-15 second grace pause period so your opponent can't un-pause for that long, but only in 1v1s. (a majority of 4v4 players would just abuse it.)

Just my opinion.

A few days ago I was getting spammed by a guy in at the very start of a ladder game. It was extremely distracting and he had been spamming me from 2 different accounts for 10 minutes. In the ladder game I paused the game to block him and before I could even type a letter my opponant unpauses it. So I paused it again and the guy goes "no pauses" and promptly leaves the game 3 minutes in. I never understood why the guy couldn't just let the game be paused for 20 seconds. This is the only time thats ever happed to me, people are usually pretty good about it.

I've had to pause a number of times, and nobody has ever been obnoxious about it. I've always asked before doing it and people have been fine with it. Personally, I usually give people several minutes of pause time as long as they say something.

Anyone that Pauses without an explanation is incredibly BM and you're within rights to unpause,

Random pauses are annoying and can throw people off their game. I am not one to unpause, but I do find it rude in that I can set aside some time to get my IRL stuff sorted for a session of ladder games, and my opponant doesn't have the foresight to do the same.

I'm exactly the same and if they don't ask or tell me why I will unpause immediately because pausing without saying anything is really, really BM to me as I've set aside other matters in order to enjoy the game. If they're so busy with other things like answering the door, phone, their mom then maybe they shouldn't be playing in the first place.

I don't even know why they have a pause option in this game. If you're playing CoD, you can't pause the game. If you're playing Soccer, you can't pause the game. Even in sports where you can pause, there is a time limit to the Time-Out.

Blizzard implemented the pause feature the way they did for a reason. It is completely up to the opponent regarding length of pause. I would prefer them getting rid of pauses completely so this is a non issue. If you are doing other shit while laddering (which some people take VERY VERY seriously) don't be upset that the other shit loses you a game here and there.

Personally, I'll wait for a pause UNLESS they pause in the first min or two of game. I find that very BM. Seriously, why queue up a game if you have to go afk in the first minute? F-That, I'm unpausing.

Starcraft is a game where you can become behind for simply doing nothing for an extremely short time.

you talk like a cheeser. I despise your type of personality. your only real argument for why you do it is "I want to win" instead of the much more worthwhile goal of "I want to get better so I can win more later".

my opinion:
get a snack: not ok, do it beforehand or not at all.
get a drink: same
go pee: same
do laundry: same
call boss: same
answer phone: this is an unexpected occurrence that cannot be predicted or apprehended, also likely to be important, also won't take long, this is ok to pause for.
answer door: same

"you committed your time they should do the same"

cool, lets apply this logic elsewhere!

"I cut of your left hand, you cut of mine, oh wait! I was born without one! I guess you will lose your hand but I won't! fair trade right?"

"we should pay the same amount of taxes, but wait, your income is a fifth of mine! LOL not my problem!"

"I as zerg didn't build any army units for 20 minutes, you as terran should show me the curtesy to do the same."

"Hey! you killed 40 of my workers, thats not fair because you didn't invest 40 workers into that attack!"

see where I am going?
your post strike me as extremely ignorant and inconsiderate in that you do not take into account the opponents circumstances. sorry, the world is not perfectly fair, it never were and never will be, but we can do the best of the situation and not be douchebags.
I'm better today than I was yesterday!

Proper pause manners: say "pp" and then pause it. Give a quick explanation if you can. And if you're going to take more than 1-2 minutes, your opponent has the right to unpause it and beat you. In fact, if you know it'll be longer (like you pick up the phone and it's not someone you can call back later) then you should just leave the game rather than force them to wait for you or sacrifice their ladder points.

You should make some effort to avoid situations where you need to pause, e.g. for a bathroom break. Unless the game has been going on 30+ minutes, there's no excuse for that. You should've gone before you queued up for the game.

If someone pauses without explanation, then it's a reasonable courtesy to wait 30 seconds to a minute before unpausing it. If you ask for an explanation and they give it within that time, you can decide how much longer to wait.

The bottom line is, people need to know how much of their time they're committing to waiting for you to unpause.

If you have to pause, you should just expect to lose the game imo. I ask every time it happens (it isn't often), but 9 times out of 10 the doucher unpauses and kills me.

The flipside to this is of course the pause trolls who try to trick you into somehow losing or doing something wrong by pausing at shitty times.

Sounds like you didn't explain anything before or after the pause. Like most people in this thread have been saying, they're okay if you pause it as long as you give a reason and how long it will take. In your case, you could've just as easily blocked the person without pausing and not have been that far behind.

Hit enter, "phone brb", enter again, then pause.
If you DC if it rings more than twice, I can assume your phone is close and nearby. Might as well get up and run to the phone and then run back to the computer cause the guy will probably unpause or have your phone within reaching distance where you don't have to get up. It's not your opponent's fault that you DC if your phone rings twice, and it is something you could probably get fixed

Now that's commitment.

Not really. I do the exact same as this guy. Why would I want to ladder if I am expecting an interruption? That makes no sense imo.

It is ladder. I'm not worried that much about my manner or the strictness of honoring pauses. I'm trying to either mass games for practice or relax, and waiting 3 minutes for somebody to talk to his mom about doing his homework isn't in my plans.

If somebody has been polite all game and asks for a pause at a reasonable time, they get it. If somebody has been a douche, waits for a big battle/micro intense moment, or doesn't ask - I unpause until they run out.

EDIT: But really people need to learn this is just a game and if RL calls be willing to take a loss. Its just a game. Crying about un-pauses to me also sounds a little silly, but thats my opinion.
