A few days ago I was getting spammed by a guy in at the very start of a ladder game. It was extremely distracting and he had been spamming me from 2 different accounts for 10 minutes. In the ladder game I paused the game to block him and before I could even type a letter my opponant unpauses it. So I paused it again and the guy goes "no pauses" and promptly leaves the game 3 minutes in. I never understood why the guy couldn't just let the game be paused for 20 seconds. This is the only time thats ever happed to me, people are usually pretty good about it.

Sounds like you didn't explain anything before or after the pause. Like most people in this thread have been saying, they're okay if you pause it as long as you give a reason and how long it will take. In your case, you could've just as easily blocked the person without pausing and not have been that far behind.

Crappy reasons like "my phone's ringing" don't cut it.
If your house is in danger of being set on fire, sure, explain it to me and pause.

Read what I said before, I dc when my phone rings more than twice. How do you expect people to explain their exact situation in life that fast? Before you unpause and take a heavy lead...

Hit enter, "phone brb", enter again, then pause.
If you DC if it rings more than twice, I can assume your phone is close and nearby. Might as well get up and run to the phone and then run back to the computer cause the guy will probably unpause or have your phone within reaching distance where you don't have to get up. It's not your opponent's fault that you DC if your phone rings twice, and it is something you could probably get fixed

I was just referring to what the guy I quoted said. Most people do allow me the time though, so I don't have many problems if i say why.

I always ask first and tell them how long, usually liek "can I pause for just 30sec?"

I never get into a situation where I need to pause in a ladder game. If I get a phonecall, I ignore it and call back after the game, If I am expecting visitors I will not ladder (and i'll ignore the door if I am not expecting people), although I cannot comment on having a child cry as I do not have one.

Random pauses are annoying and can throw people off their game. I am not one to unpause, but I do find it rude in that I can set aside some time to get my IRL stuff sorted for a session of ladder games, and my opponant doesn't have the foresight to do the same.

Much respect for you man.

I'll let them pause if they ask, they have polite manners (I've had to deal with too many grief pauses), and they declare the time they need. Remember, those 60 seconds where the opponent is answering a door/phone, we're sitting there.... staring at a computer screen.... spamming the last hotkey we were pressing. Not pleasant on the mind when you're trying to get in the moment.

I agree with the OP. The very little you say early on in chat is all the other person has to go by (apart from your play itself) and if you seem decent enough, they'll probably cut you some slack. Barring a single one of those brilliant pause, say 'gg,' then type in chat that you've left the game deals, I've never unpaused before the other person says they're ready, nor has anyone ever unpaused on me. Including an instance that took me out of the room for what I thought would only be a few seconds, and turned out to be more than five minutes (wound up coming back and just giving him the free ladder points for the time I had wasted - though as noted above, perhaps that's not an ideal solution either).

Guess it's much like the "real world"; conduct yourself with decency and most people, at least, will act decently toward you..

Yeah if you need to pause once in a 50 games and opponent unpauses then it's not a big deal, but if you pause every single game because you have 5 kids then it's your problem. Don't play the game if you can't have 20mins of free time.

Or someone can commit an absolutely minuscule amount of time into making some1 else's gaming experience a little better. Or are we all assholes....

Yes, that is why we are against pausing. You commit an absolutely minuscule amount of time, like ~15 minutes.

If you don't have the time for a ladder game, play a custom game or play with a friend where it is fine to pause. The other party might not have time for the game if you keep pausing.

I'm surprised pause is enabled for ladder games at all. I think if someone comes up you should just surrender and plan better next time.

Youre grouping two types if people together who really shouldnt be grouped together for the sake of this argument, which makes your post kinda stupid.

Yes, if someone pauses without asking or makes you wait 5 minutes then he should gtfo. But what about someone who literally needs 20 seconds. Ive unhooked my mouse by accident and asked for a pause, then resumed the game in less than 10 seconds. It was a nice gesture by the other guy to wait for me. Cost him absolutely nothing, and allowed us to keep playing and enjoying the game. I doubt that right now hes mourning the loss of 10 seconds.

Is someone wasting your time by making you wait 5 minutes? Yes, absolutely, go unpause the game.
Is someone wasting your time by makinh you wait 15 seconds? No. Saying youre too busy to spare 15 seconds, yet laddering on sv2 , is bullshit. Imo people that do are either assholes, narcissists, or just desperate for points.

If i pause i dont care at all about my points, but i do try to enjoy the game and from that sense id rather continue a game ive put time, effort, and thought into. Most opponents would feel the same way and not mind waiting a quarter pr a minute, unless theyre the type described above

Pausing = bm. If you have to go do things for 1-5 mins, just leave the game. I ladder to play, not to sit around and waste my time waiting for you to do non-Starcraft related activities.

It's like "hey I'm driving on the freeway at 70 miles an hour. But wait, I've got a phone call. Let's stop my car and answer the phone while 50 cars pile up behind me. What's the big deal? Why couldn't they just wait patiently for me to do my thing? My ladder points and time-to-do-stuff-while-paused is important! Their time is not?"

i would just explain brb really fast. if its over 5-10 minutes you should just leave the game, as that is pretty annoying.

personally i've only gotted 'paused' on by like 2 people and it was pretty fast.

i guess there isn't anything you can do about someone who just unpauses the game and owns you, but if they enjoy winning against someone who isn't even playing then its on them.

As long as you ask for a pause (pp etc), I'm more then willing to pause. I don't like pauses out of nowhere though.
Never argue with an idiot. They will just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

If they say pp or something first I'll be agreeable about it, if they just pause without saying anything though and are gone for more than 10 seconds I'm not going to waste my time.

I don't expect a pause to be honored. However I did pause once and say BRB door! just a minute please.

ran to bathroom and relieved myself. Came back and put the hurt on the poor guy.

If you say PP which means pause please and then you maybe give one line to explain... door/phone/etc. most people will be happy to let you pause. Just say something first so they don't think you are a douche.

Pause w/ explanation is acceptable, provided it's just a short interruption couple minutes max. After that, I'm going to resume because whatever it is it's taking too long and you should have just left the game. Pause w/o an explanation and I'll give you enough time that you should have been able to get something out about why you paused then resume it.

If they say PP, or give me an explanation it's fine. Otherwise it's really quite frustrating and I might unpause if I'm in a bad mood.

Just because pause feature is implemented on ladder, it doesn't give you the right to pause without any consent. Even if you met people that would un-pause after given your explanation, you just have to live with it. By implementing minimum pause duration would just create more troubles.

Personally I would accept any pause with or without explanation, unless we are in a middle of a battle. I never requested the pause myself, if there was phone ringing I would just call back later with the caller ID.

Ask first - always!

If he's legitimately got to go, or chooses not to pause for you, its your problem, not his.

Your at the mercy of the goodness of his heart

always ask BEFORE pause so the other isnt in the middle of anything importent, otherwise alot of players are kind of pissed and unpause understandable

It's kind of a shame that so many people assume that people are pausing for stupid reasons like having to pee or talking to their girlfriend. I only pause when I either can't play (battery died, keyboard came unplugged), or something really important and unexpected comes up (a bee stings my son and he comes crying to me, I need a moment to calm him and walk him over to his mom to ask her to take care of him).
I don't pause for stupid reasons, and I expect that when other people pause, it's not for a stupid reason.
