unpausing immediately is extremely BM. At least hear out the reason first and tell them yes or no.

If you say "brb" or whatever first I don't really care. But I really hate random pauses with no communication and sometimes I will unpause if I'm not in a good mood.

If you pause without saying anything I will "??" and wait about 10-20 seconds for a reply... if I don't get one I am unpausing. If you can't be bothered telling me you need a few seconds/minutes I can't be bothered waiting. Common courtesy suggests if you really need to dash for a few seconds you can afford a second or two to type "brb phone/bio/door/fire/police" etc.

Ya anyone who doesn't ask I don't keep it paused cause i have no idea what hes doing or how long hes gunna be. If they ask im happy to oblige.

I turbo unpause because when you join the game with me you are now accounting for my time as well as yours. Its not that i want a ladder win; i could care less about that. its just that i dont really know how long you will be gone and if its anything important then sc shouldnt matter and if your mouse battery died youve ignored the warnings.
basically, if its anything you cant ignore enough to finish the game for, it takes precedence over your ladder loss anyways

Sometimes it's reasonable to need a pause.
If the guy just pauses it without saying anything, I'll tell him I'm giving him 30 seconds and then I unpause it.
If he tells me he needs to pause, I tell him I'm going to give him 3 minutes and then I'm going to unpause it. Anything more than 3 minutes, and you're not being reasonable and you should just leave.
I've only had someone who had an issue with me pausing it once. I always say, "Mind if I pause a second?" and if they ask I explain.

Maybe you should stick to customs when you're at a time when it's really likely you'll end up pausing and ladder when you're free for sure.

Usually it's just a small thing and I need a pause for 10-60s. But some people just turbo-unpause whenever you pause. Obviously this is an autolose for you, not very fun, and really just sort of sad. Sometimes when I say something about it, they call ME bad mannered for pausing.

Then leave from game and start a new one, when you solve all problems.

Why players must lose their fun from game, because other had some problems?

But I have one rule. Player must explain reason, why he paused. After 10 seconds if there are no reason in chat, I unpause.

There's no such thing as needing to pause, SC2 first, everything else later.

As far as i know, it's common curtesy to write something before pausing. I've seen several instances of things like "pp" (pause please), "1sec", "brb", "phone", "door", "bio", etc. Those take a second or less to type and show that you don't just pause for the heck of it or to disturb your opponents play.

If you have the option after the "pp" and pressing pause, just say how long it'll take (10sec,1min,3min,...).

I bet you will have far less people unpausing immedatly.

Everytime I've had to pause because of the phone or whatnot I quickly write "Hang on a sec, Phone" and everyone so far has been understanding and left it paused. I then make sure they are ready before unpausing. No bad experience to speak of there.

If my opponent pauses the game I'd like him to write something quick about why. I usually only wait a minute or two then unpause it if he doesn't say anything.

As discussed by others, the answer to this seems pretty simple. Don't be a jerk and unpause if someone gives a good reason and is back in a reasonable amount of time (Less than 3 minutes imo). Things come up and it is bad manner to unpause in these situations. At the same time, don't start a game if there is a good chance something will come up. Someone shouldn't have to wait a significant period of time because you were expecting an important call or didn't replace your mouse batteries even though the warning light was on. Also, let them know why you paused or ask them if it is okay to pause first. The best manner is probably to ask but I feel like in an average ladder game pausing yourself is fine.

As far as pausing during a big fight or at some other critical time, this is somewhat more debatable. Obviously, the same real life stuff that can happen during any part of the game so clarifying what is going on should always be a priority.

Bottom line, pausing should only be used to resolve important issues so that it may be respected as such.

Like what was stated before it's not BM to unpause, they are doing you a favour by spending their time waiting for you. If you explain why you need to go quick (sec phone) I'll wait until you are done. Even if you go "sec" I'll wait a minute and then ask whats up no reply then I restart in a another minute if I'm not busy. Don't blame people for not wanting to sit around and wait for you because you can't get your shit together. Obviously stuff may come up (phone, door, spilled something etc) But if something is really so urgent that you can't explain what's wrong the person is probably more worried about that than a single loss in a video game.

Unfortunately, I don't have time for you to pause. I have other things to do.
Bad luck is bad luck, can't help you there.

for me I need you to tell me why the hell you are pausing, then you can pause for awhile, if I get bored, i'm going to unpause, [if you need to switch your hotkeys or settings I can understand that, no reason = BM imo]
if you just pause and I dont' know the reason, I'll wait 5-10 seconds, and if still nothing I'm unpausing

at least that's what I'd do ._.

Give a simple one line explanation and wait a moment after you pause. If they just immediately unpause and keep playing then let them have their free win and leave. An individual game doesn't matter and if they care about winning so much they don't want to play fairly then thats a bit sad.

I always wait when someone pauses and expect so from my opponents.
I always though ppl who unpause are around the age of 12.

I have neither paused in game, nor have I unpaused. Though I dont recall anyone ever pausing without saying 'brb' or something similiar. I suppose if someone said nothing I would give a minute or two befor asking them if they were there and then proceed to unpause. I would feel bad though

That rings pretty fucking hallow considering you're playing SC2. It's not like someone is coming into your house and forcing you to idle while you're doing your taxes. If you have time to play SC2 waiting a minute or two is completely negligible during a ladder session.
