I think that allowing maybe 10 seconds for the other player to write a reason is reasonable, after that, unpausing is fine
Though I haven't faced a pause in ages

often when I'm playing a game of starcraft 2 something will come up in real life: the phone or the doorbell will ring, the baby will cry, my mouse battery will suddenly die, etc etc.

Usually it's just a small thing and I need a pause for 10-60s. But some people just turbo-unpause whenever you pause. Obviously this is an autolose for you, not very fun, and really just sort of sad. Sometimes when I say something about it, they call ME bad mannered for pausing.

I did notice, however, that if you chat with people at the start of the game, they're much more likely to allow a pause.
Same if you take a few seconds to explain first.

One unfortunate thing is that people have a real tendency to snap-unpause if you pause in the middle of a big battle, especially if it involves any sort of 'cheesiness' like banshees or DT or a zergling rush.

Any other ideas for improving your odds of being allowed a pause?

Anything interesting to say on the subject?

Any defense on the part of the unpausers?

If they're not willing to take the break then just take the loss. Who cares really? Even if you're a pro your ladder rank is rarely used for anything, so just deal with it.

Your in the middle of the best game you've ever played, right in the rhythm etc. and out of the blue the guy pauses? Keep going, get to the next game and hope you keep the magic

I usually pause, then explain. If they unpause immidiately, I explain before pausing again. This works almost always. Except once. I pause, he unpauses, I explain, pause again, he says ok. When I come back, I see that he unpaused after ten seconds. Fortunately, I was on a complete dominationstreak (sometimes something just clicks for me and I win all the way up to a new league in days) so I crushed his attack that killed my third. I proceed to roll him. Got BMed pretty bad for that.

TL:DR: Dont trust people who unpause immidiately, they are not against backstabbing you.

I don't unpause on people, and I haven't been unpaused on. Always explain what I'm doing, even if I have to simplify things (e.g. going over to a friend and yelling at him for doing something stupid=phone call). One time some poor guy got his graphics completely fucked, couldn't see anything but black. Took him 5 or so minutes to realize he couldn't fix them, then he apologized and left. Didn't unpause. It was kind of a pity, it was my best matchup in any case.

Always ask first or right after you pause.

I really don't mind if the other person paused, and i never unpause, unless they're being a dick about it (such as pausing when they're about to lose). I can wait since I'm most likely going to be playing when it's my free time, which is alot since University is done.

However, if the matter is more important than a simple game of starcraft, I believe the person should just leave.

I have nothing against pauses if my opponent asks me before. If he/she does not I'll unpause immediately

I wait because I'm nice but I have absolutly no problem if my opponent auto unpasuses when I pause. If something comes up just stop playing. We each have as much right to do that as the other.

just pause, if your offended by someone needing to take a few in real life, let em, like seriously how impatient are you that you cant wait like one minute, your playing SC you obviously have some spare time on your hands, be a good person, you don't know whats going on in someones life

I dont care if they ask for a pause and explain why, i usually lose my patience when someone randomly pauses for a long period of time with no explanation.

I've only had it happen once, which was in a 2v2, my mouse died on me, even though it was charged, and I had to fiddle around at the back of the PC to reconnect it. I asked to pause, and the guy refused, and said "you should check your hardware before the game". I was really annoyed, and we lost to an early rush. I don't

I always give people the benefit of the doubt, and would be tempted to just float all my buildings and go afk if someone wasn't prepared to pause for 2 mins.

Find people pausing without giving a reason or saying annything quiet rude
The first times i encounterd this i unpauses immediatly but now realise thats considerd bm as well
You have no idea how long it will take and puts you out the zone of playing
Also like others i have played manny games and i NEVER had to pause
Cant think of a valid reason to pause beside in a verry long game maybe 1 minute near the end for bathroom
If people have to pauze they should just go afk themselves and do what they have to do and accept that they might loose in that time
For high profile games where you 100% sure that your opponent dont pause for the most silly private reasons off course you should grant a pause but somewhere in gold league against john do who pauses 5 minutes into the game because he is getting a drink i just dont get
Then you should go play a custom game or something but pausing ladder games i just find bm in itself
Compare sc with other sports, there are virtually no sports where people can just pause the game at own will lol, and the few sports where people are allowed to take a time out are all regulated and people know how long it will take
If aproach sc casual then off course you should grant a pause but imo thats more something for custom games or games between friends
ladder is supposed to be competition

having said that: i would never resufe a pause if someone would ask and explain

I always ask first and say thanks after ending the pause. It helps if you explain why you have to pause too. Of course, there will always be people who unpause while you are unavailable.

I don't mind people pausing for a sec, but if its really minutes just leave the game already. The other day I just entered a game, couple minutes later phone went. I just said " grats on easy points, sorry g2g". People shouldn't worry about a lose o some points.

Worst thing is people who randomly pause without saying a word. Than I ask what's up, if Jo answer I resume.

Personally I think that even the very busy people whose time is super important can afford 5s to ask 'why pause'? Sometimes the pause needs to be NOW and if you wait 2-3s you will get an answer. For example the other day my mouse died while I was microing a vr and 2 Phoenix, if I wait even 1s to explain the game is over. And how is it fun for anyone to win or lose for a reason like that?

I'm puzzled by people who say things like 'you ignored the warning it's your fault' about the mouse battery dying. Iduuno about you guys, but my warning is a little tiny light UNDER my hand. Who sees that?

Far as team games go, is it better manners to pause and make several people wait 30s? Or go afk for 30s, thus losing the game for your team and spoiling the 15 minute game for everyone? I don't know about you, but I don't get much satisfaction from beating an afk opponent.

Even the time-wasting argument seems flawed. If you unpause on someone who can't resume play immediately, you've taken a fun, challenging game and turned it into you vs nobody... I mean, single-player is better than that. If you were in a tennis match and the guy's shoe came untied, would you wait 30s for him to tie it? Or would you serve immediately and call him BM for trying to waste your time? Which option would be more fun for you?

You should just ask for a pause, and explain the reason for it.
