Ok, this thread is aimed mostly at the younger generation (people who've grown on RPG's like Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Mass Effect and Fallout 3) but I believe that older gamers will also find it nice to reminisce some of the finest moments in the history of gaming.
This is a way to show people a really awesome RPG, without the need to discourage anyone by stuff like Infinity Engine, used in Planescape: Torment or Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series. There's nothing wrong with this engine, but I'm afraid that younger people could be thrown off by the archaics of it.
Anyway, to get back on topic, I urge you all to play some Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. If you haven't played it before, you're in for an adventure of your life, if you did, there's nothing wrong in playing it again and reliving the joyous moments.
Why should I play it?
KotOR is a masterpiece. It is ridiculously good. You get a cool story, several ways to do each sidequest and the best NPC in any game to date: HK-47. Seriously, this game would be awesome even if just for him. Just look at this line of his (one of very many such):
"Disclosure: I am a versatile protocol and combat droid, fluent in verbal and cultural translation. Should your needs prove more... practical, I am also skilled in highly personal combat." - HK-47
There is so much to this game compared to the later RPG-like titles... Characters, their stories and interactions, some truly epic quests on the way etc. You're really missing out if you won't at least try it.
Does this game have any flaws?
Sadly, like basically any human creation, this one is not rid of flaws. They're very minor though, the biggest being some skills losing importance (security comes to mind) due to the door-bashing mechanic. It was remedied in the second installment of the game, but even more flaws are in there (they rushed KotOR2 too much to release it during christmas which resulted in the game being not finished and not polished enough, with some lingering bugs remaining).
It doesn't have much influence on the gameplay though, as the most important things happen during the conversations and of course combat (no bugs there at least). Exploration being a bit unfair (since the least combat-capable class doesn't really need one of its core skills) doesn't diminish the overall awesomeness of this title much.

Recommended mods
Note: They're all of cosmetic nature (maybe except TSL restoration...), nothing that has influence on gameplay as not to destroy it for you.
+ Show Spoiler [K1+K2] +Ultimate Sound ModThis one changes some sounds like blaster fire and saber swings to the ones in the movies. Much nicer. Movie Style Saber Re-TextureMakes your lightsaber flicker and all... Both of the above mods work with KotOR I and II (just extract the files and put them into the Override folder in your game directory).
+ Show Spoiler [K1] +
+ Show Spoiler [K2] +
+ Show Spoiler [extras] +Heroes of the Old Republic mod 1.5HotOR updateThis mod changes the saber hilts. It also adds armored robes to the game (they look great and aren't all that OP). Use this mod before lighsaber retextures posted above, then just overwrite (retextures only change blade colours and add flickering so they don't brake the hilts). Together this mods make lightsabers look truly amazing. Since it also gives you access to the lightsaber before the intended time in the game (you find one in your quarters when you board Harbinger) it is not recommended to apply this mod during your first playthrough. It is fully compatible with TSLRCM 1.7 (which should be applied prior to HotOR).
All mentioned K1 mods in one place:

Please don't blame me if K2 mods don't work as they should, there's a lot of files in them and the process of applying them can be quite tedious. I really tried.
Enjoy!

Oh my god. Kotor. I've played through each one at least three times. Pretty solid, both the engine and the story. I've been definitely missing HK-47 ;( Kotor 2 had a great potential (even considering the similarity to Planescape: Torment)... too bad they rushed it. I'd guess the mod that should have included the missing stuff is done by now?

My favorite game of all time. Whenever people bring up their favorite RPGs im always a bit sad that KOTOR is never brought up. Sure the second one sorta fell on its face, but it was still a damn good series.
|
this is totaly legit I got a copy of it for 3 bucks off of steam for some crazy sale. I've seen it for that a few times and the second one is just as epic and I do belive in a lot of places more so.
The graphics scale up VERY nicely to todays standards think something like what source engine would be a few years ago.
will use these mods for my game very interested on what It does.

I'm in the minority that likes the second one better. Much better in fact, I felt the first one was sort of a rehash of A New Hope with renamed characters, while the second one was a more personal journey that took an approach to morality that was completely unprecedented in Star Wars games.
|
I remember thinking "WTF is Mass Effect Bioware? I want KotOR 3!!!" If you haven't check it out, do so :D
I really enjoyed the second one as well, it seems to have a bit more depth, despite the bugs and incompleteness.
|
Agreed, very very good game. You can pick it up off of Steam for something like <$5 when it's on sale (I think I got mine for like $2.00, or 95% off).
|
I already bought this through Steam last Christmas and I'm going to play through it again.
|
Haven't played it since they had it on sale for steam
I'm on the part where you land on Tatooine and + Show Spoiler +

I love both games so much. First RPG I ever played, and by far the best. I've spent hours on them both, I love them equally. Play them!
|
Played 1 and 2 to death. Great games. Just reading about them makes me want to play them again. :-)
|
I must have played through KOTOR 10 times. Great game, lots of different paths to take. Not only Dark/Light but different abilities you can focus on either side or mix it up and be greyish. As far as the story goes you can take several paths which is also good for replay-ability. And not to mention the purple lightsaber <3
|
just played last year finally! You can really see the influence it had on the genre, and a precursor to how the modern rpg would be. love you bioware, keep stealing more hours out of my life.
|
Thank you for this thread.I never could make people play kotor. I hope this will inspire some people
I want to add that Kotor2 has kreia, who is one of the best characters i have ever seen in a game, movie,or literature. She is the only chick in a rpg that i didn't want to bang (obviously), yet i carried her everywhere.
There is a restoration project for kotor2 that restores most of the cut content from the game.Including shitload of cutscenes, dialogues, endings, skills, quests and even an entire planet(HK factory). I played that mod a few years ago and it was %99 complete.Yet i cant find the original site at the moment. If anyone wants they could check the lucas or bioware forums i guess
and for the love of god people..PLAY THE FIRST GAME FIRST,SECOND GAME SECOND.

Seriously a masterpiece, and the game that got me irretrievably addicted to good RPGs. However, its graphics and gameplay haven't really aged well. IMO it would be really difficult for someone used to modern RPGs to go back and play this one.

The second one IS better. The only reason people think it's worse was because Obsidian was rushed by Lucas Arts to release it almost 6 months before its original release date so they could not buffer out the small shit.
However, the game is still infinitely better than the first one. Yeah, people make fun of Peragus for being the longest fucking tutorial ever to exist -- but that is just like 2 hours of a HUGE game. I mean, the twist in KOTOR 1 was so obvious I literally knew what it was within 30 minutes after getting off the ship. I was not the only one too, it was blatantly obvious. Was it still fun as hell? Yes. KOTOR is one of my favorite RPG's of all time, fuck, favorite games of all time.
However, the hate KOTOR 2 gets is unwarranted. Obsidian has the best writers in the gaming industry -- that is essentially undisputed from the gamers I talk to. The story for KOTOR 2 is just astounding. I wont give it away, but anyone who played it for any length of time knows what I'm talking about when I say how the Force is portrayed in KOTOR 2 is freaking amazing -- even for die hard Star Wars fans. Of course George Lucas does not like it since it actually had some depth to it and was not LOL GOOD VS LOL EVIL, but nonetheless, it was interesting to say the least.
The gameplay was also solid. Yes, it had a few bugs. However, the gameplay was essentially the same as KOTOR 1's. The dialogue, the combat (except with more force powers this time around), etc.
I recommend KOTOR 1 to anyone any day of the week. However, if you liked KOTOR 1, definitely try out the second one. It's boat loads of fun to see how they twist shit around that is considered set in stone and how much it makes sense. Also:

this game had a better twist than bioshock, just sayin'. love this game, such a classic :D

The first one was better in overall experience, but the second one had Kreia, one of the best video game characters ever. Talk to her often and listen to what she has to say.

i always wished that they would make kotor 3,4 with mass effect graphics instead of mass effect ;(
don't get me wrong, mass effect is great but star wars is just way better
now i have to hope that SWTOR will be good ^^
i remember how my dad brought me kotor on december 31th of year 2003 that was such a happy day ;P
