Hello, bumping this thread for some advice! I bought KOTOR 1 from the recent steam sale and only recently have been able to start it. I decided on a scoundrel, can someone give me advice on the skills that are most important and stats? I hate leveling it up and finding out later its completely useless!

Thanks, this looks like a good game already!

EDIT: If yall have played Mass effect, I want to play this character like a stealth sniper assassin (Infiltrator)! My character name is Thane :D

The game is pretty easy, so you don't have to follow a specific build to be able to win the game. I would advise not to level up before you become a jedi, though. the best is to stay at level 2 through all of Taris and Dantoine. That way you get maximum jedi powers.

Uh oh, I am lvl 3 already -.- I should stop helping people out and killing anyone I see or what? I am exploring Taris, just helped some guy who sold Sith Uniforms to some guy in the Lower City that is planning to attack them.

No, don't stop doing anything. What he means is don't go to the level up screen and assign your attributes, skills, and feats. That way, when you become a Jedi, you gain those levels *as a Jedi* and not as your non-Jedi class. You still gain experience, so don't worry about missing out on that.

While you are mentioning ME, to me Kotor has a better story and better characters. I only liked combat in ME more because Kotor is way too easy.

Ahh I see, well a bit too late for that haha already leveled up persuasion and other stuff :\ Whats the difference between leveling it as a jedi than a non-jedi? Don't I obtain the same attributes/skills/feats

and @-Archangel- , I mention ME because thats the first game I played from Bioware and I enjoyed it. Many people recommended KOTOR so here I am playing it, hopefully I get as much fun and delve into this world as much as I was in ME 1 & 2 (Haven't played 3 yet)

I would say I've played this series a lot, at least both games, both sides.

Is it worth it to download and install all the mods listed in the OP, in particular the TSL? Or shoud I spend that time completing Deus Ex 2 and 3 ?

The main reason is Force points. The more levels you have as a Jedi, the more Force points you get. Also, Jedi have defense bonuses and additional feats not available to non-Jedi classes. While it may be difficult to play through Taris at such a low level (especially as dark side, in my experience), it's much more rewarding later on in the game.

I'm not sure about the mods for KotOR 1, as I feel that game is good enough by itself (lol 40+ goty awards)

KotOR 2, on the other hand, definitely get at least the TSLRCM, I think they're on version 1.8 now. KotOR 1 wasn't rushed. KotOR 2 was rushed to hell and back, and is unfinished without that mod.

Damn, I am about to reach level 4. When do I become a jedi? I just reached the lower city and killing shit in the apartments here. Should I just not do sidequests and focus on getting jedi first?

Don't change your playstyle at all. The only thing we're saying not to do is go to the level up screen. You'll become a Jedi shortly after Taris and you'll gain all the levels you've "saved up" then, but as a Jedi instead of as a soldier/scout/scoundrel. Don't skip any sidequests in the interest of becoming a Jedi faster.

This should be quite obvious, but only pick ONE of the (two weapon fighting / dueling) feat lines. The other would be useless to you. Generally, the feats that add +1 to skills per level of the feat are also useless (an argument can be made for Treat Injury, see below, but I don't recommend it). Pick one special attack and max it (doesn't matter which one, just stick to it), and when you get your Jedi feats, max those as well.

As far as skills, I've seen arguments both for and against Persuade. I'm personally against it in KotOR 1 due to not many opportunities to use it and Force Persuade as a Jedi. Put your points in Treat Injury instead. Tbh, the only really important skill in KotOR 1 is Treat Injury due to its effect on medpacs. The others CAN be safely neglected without any significant impact, so pick whatever you want.

In KotOR 2, though, skills become MUCH more useful due to the crafting system. In fact, I always start my KotOR 2 character as a Jedi Sentinel with all attributes at 12 and Intelligence at 16 to get as many skill points as possible. Then I make Repair a class skill and keep Computer Use, Awareness, Persuade, Repair, Security, and Treat Injury maxed as long as possible

Force powers are a bit more complicated due to light/dark side bonus/deficit mechanics. Just make sure you pick the powers that align with your moral choices XD

Alright cool, I probably wont be good at using a lightsaber if I want to put a lot of feats into guns ( but I cant have both...or can I? lol

I am heading off to bed soon, thanks for all the help. Sucks I already put some skills into persuasion though. Is a rounded stats page the best? Or do I max out dexterity and strength

OK now, disregard all the previous advice you've been given

First of all, Scoundrel is one of the best classes to start with. What you should be increasing is Persuade (as it's your class skill) which will be useful for gaining extra cash from quest rewards - this is particularly useful if you're going to play on the Light Side as you get less cash there because of your altruism. Scoundrel's Luck, your class feat is awesome as it gives you a static boost to your armour class (and you can't have enough of that) and Sneak Attack, which is also awesome.
You shouldn't be going higher than lvl 6 before changing into Jedi (you usually do that ~lvl 8 if playing the usual way). This way you'll get Improved Scoundrel's Luck (+4 AC!) and some sneak attack. Also, you won't get all that many skill points as a Jedi, so that's why you should also use some levels on your Scoundrel.

Some pointers:
- stealth is only useful if you're going to play through the game solo (without companions)
- security is useless in KotOR 1 and priceless in KotOR 2 (in 1 you can just bash stuff open)
- your first feat should go into making either repair or computer use your class skill and upgrade it to level 4 at the least (you'll need a lot of repair if you want to go Dark Side and use the coolest companion ever)
- feats of note for you: implants, critical strikes, dueling (if going single-saber, my prefered style)
- when you go Jedi you can choose 1 out of 3 classes, Guardian will increase your hp and fighting power a lot, Sentinel is considered imba due to his immunities and more skill points than others, Consular isn't really good for fighting but can blast things apart with Force (only really good for Dark Siders)
- skills you want: persuade (as high as you can), computer use/repair (4 points at the least), treat injury (all the other points you can sink into it)

Now, with Scoundrel and Dueling feat you should have a static +7 AC bonus, which is nice. You also get sneak attack which pairs nicely with Critical Strikes, Force Stun and other ways of debilitating your enemy (you practically double or triple your damage on enemies that can't defend themselves, and then you get criticals for even more damage and stun).

To sum it up, if you want to be a melee monster, go for Guardian type Jedi, balanced and easier survival is Sentinel and Dark Side evil maniac blasting everyone to bits is Consular.

Hope that helps.

Edit: Oh, and get the mods I mentioned in the OP. They don't affect gameplay at all, just make things look and sound better in the game.

Sound advice, this is. I admittedly have very little experience with the Scoundrel, as I usually keep my non-Jedi level down to 2.

Light side consulars are not that bad if you go for a scoundrel actually. It is not anywhere near the power of a dark consular (I'm looking at you life drain and force lightning), but with sneak attack and the huge disable potential of a LS consular you can dish out good damage. Treat him like a support character (skill your party accordingly, you will want two characters that can do good damage while you sit in the back and disable everything) and you will do great. The final fight might be hard though.

As far as skills are concerned persuade is decent if you want a light side character, since some force persuades come with dark side points.

This reminds me of my friend, who was playing the game for the first time, I come to visit him and I see that he's near the end of the game, still using guns and light armour... Not that it can't work, but when I gave him the robes and lightsaber he suddenly started tearing through stuff that posed a lot of problems for him otherwise. Not to mention the fact that he got access to many force powers which are restricted by armour.

Just some of the perils of not knowing what to really do.

Edit: And I forgot that when you become Jedi it might be wise to get Treat Injury as your class skill. This way you should be able to increase persuade, injury and repair/computer use on every level (depending on your INT, I usually don't create characters with INT < 14).

KOTOR2 was my favourite game. I actually accidently woundered it in the store, and bought. It kinda was my first big RPG, from which i learned more english than I ever learned form the 10 grades of school, lol.
Even desprite the story conections, you can play one wothout playing KOTOR1, mighty fine.

KOTOR1 was not all that impressive after KOTOR2, even inspite KOTOR2 not spoiling KOTOR1 storyline afaik at all, after all KOTOR2 did a better job of characters you could learn from them, it was interesting to talk to many of them, pretty muche everyone had a number of unique skills, and overally the squard felt much better, not to mention the pretty common sence interface inprovements KOTOR2 had, and some really good new feats&forces.

Too bad KOTOR2 was rushed.
