The way I see it, when I click the find match button, I am in a way making a commitment to my opponent that I am willing to put aside a block of time in order to determine the winner of our game.
Don't get me wrong, I understand that RL things that are more important that a game of SC can come up, but if something does come up that is more important than out game, taking a loss should also not be much of a problem for them.
If an opponent has the courtesy of letting me know why they are pausing the game, then I normally won't un-pause it. But if the game randomly pauses during a critical moment, and my opponent doesn't say anything for a minute+, you can bet that I will un-pause the game.

Nothing like being proud of acting like a jerk I guess. It's not part of the game. It's you being selfish and immature.

as the guy above me said, you are immature. You are abusing features of a game that are meant to be helpful if things come up.

when someone says "brb" och "1 sec" i unpause, because thats just stupid.. most often i have very little time to spare, and when i ladder i dont want to sit for 5 minutes waiting, wasting my precious starcraft-time
if someone gave a legit reason "phone rings, 1 min" i would not unpause, but dont expect me to sit and wait given a flimsy message like "brb"
of course i always ignore phone calls etc during play, i would never pause, i am more likely to say "have to go, gg" than pause, even if its just something that takes 2-3min to fix

I couldn't care less about people who are too stupid not to play ladder when they are expecting phone calls or visitors. And if you have a baby and you're the only one in the house, maybe you shouldn't play ladder then either.
When someone calls me and I'm not waiting for an important call I just let it ring or throw away my headset and talk while playing.
You people are the assholes, thinking I would waste my time waiting for you and your special needs.
For the OP. The only time I let people pause the game is when they give me an ETA so I can tab out. Something along the lines of "pp 1 min". Who says they are 'expecting' a phone call or someone ringing their door bell? Stuff happens, how hard for you is it to wait for 1-2 minutes? If you want a 100% guarantee there will be no pauses you should play vs the AI. Because I know that a lot of people take life way too serious and feel like they need to be available for anyone at any point or otherwise people won't like them anymore or something. Just let the phone ring people, and call them back.
And some people take their own life so seriously they think waiting for a minute is a huge commitment.

Always ask to pause a game, don't just do it. And say thanks after. If they unpause it or say you can't then just all-in them quickly to end the game.
If it's a team game i usually just give unit control and walk away :D
|
I never unpause but i find it annoying when people do pause. If we have chatted abit before and he plays a straight up game i wouldn't mind. I've paused a few games, maybe about 10-20 since beta and i don't like doing it, i don't do it for the phone unless its something important. I don't like the idea of wasting someone elses time. It just seem like people don't understand that the person he's playing is actually forced to just sit there waiting and that messes with you aswell.
If you pause very often like you said, don't expect them all to come through. Alot of people don't wait for pauses and i understand them in a way.

I always unpause immediately.
|
I just hate people who pause and then some minutes later just resume the game without asking "Ready?". Now THAT's bm.
|
Sometimes you are just going to run into that asshole who will unpause despite good reason. I was having comp problems during a match one time (up to this point I thought the guy was a good fellow), so I paused and immediately gave my reasoning and that it would only take a few seconds to fix. Right after that he unpaused, my comp was still not fixed as it hadn't been enough time to pause, so I paused again and pleaded with him. Needless to say he unpaused right away and we did this till I was out of pauses, my comp was still glitchy and I lost the game because he attacked right away.
Some people just don't care.
|
Call me bad mannered, but if I'm you pause and you don't say anything, I wait like 10 seconds and if you don't give a reason, I unpause. I'll take a "hold on" or anything, but don't just pause.

We're all dying, so no I won't waste a minute on some dickless kid who doesn't even have the decency to "ask." Hell i was playing a 3v3 the other night and they just randomly paused, so I immediately unpaused, they then proceed to start bming the fuck outta me and using their pauses up which i just immediately unpause, maybe you have time to waste, but I don't, my time is money and anytime that my shit fell apart, broke, phone rang etc, I just played with the handicap, asked for a re, and then fixed what ever I needed too.
oh ya edit- I'd love to point out the irony in his post,"People take their own lives too seriously!" Well aren't you taking that one game of starcraft pretty seriously? WHY SO SERIOUS?!?!?!?!

I've never had a problem after doing this. Though I guess you could pause then explain, though you might need to be a fast typist :D.
Also. I ladder because I want to win. But why would a want a win because my opponent couldn't play for part of the game. Seriously the win is just a number, but the feeling I get from actually beating someone else at this game is more satisfying.

unpause immediately... just take any advantage u can get as cheaply as possible.. and if you lose... then thats quite embarassing.

^this, just lose the game and move on to the next, there's absolutely no reason your real life has to interrupt me

um, tbh.... ive played thousand+ ladder games and rarely have to pause.. so get ur priorities straight =) shouldnt be happening often..
|
sometimes pausing is needed, when it is, I'll quickly type 'ppp' in chat and then pause, give a quick reason why i need to pause followed by how long it will take.
So far I haven't had a problem, but I also think people get more manner about pausing as you go up in the leagues, simply because people know how it is to need to pause.
Anyone who unpauses without good reason just to get ahead in the game is amazingly bad BM (not talking about unpausing after 5 minutes when they said they'd be gone for 2, that's fine)
|
I usually ask before pausing and tell the reason but they still unpause it's really annoying
|
If you communicate something coherent right before or after you plan on pausing, I'm generally ok with waiting a minute or two. Anything longer than a couple of minutes and I unpause. If you pause without letting me know why, I'll immediately unpause.
|
5 minutes is the max i'll wait. but i'm generally ok with waiting it unless they did something like pause in the middle of a battle or me killing them. Although if it was a really good game i might wait longer.
There isn't much that could come up that would require more than a 5 minute pause.
We all play to win, but winning through skill is more important. Getting dc wins isn't very satisfying. Otherwise we'd all just go smurf bronze league games.
