For some reason I can't chat when the game is paused, atleast not when I've paused it, it's really annoying because I can't ask if my opponent is ready after I'm back -.-. any ideas what the problem might be? I always feel so BM when I have to unpause and then ask if he's ready lol....

A few weeks ago I had to pause because someone hit my car. When I realized that the situation was going to be a lot more involved than I thought, I just gave the guy the win. No need to have him sit there paused for 5 minutes when I was going to lose to his four-gate anyway!

If you do not let someone pause if he asks your a dick imo. Like you never have to pause the game yourself. Yesterday I asked someone if I could pause to open the door. He says ok, waits 10 sec, and unpause. That was the biggest retard I have ever seen on Starcraft. I was shocked he could live with being himself, I would feel awful.

I hope you spammed him with something like
" How can you live with being yourself? How do you get up in the morning and look in the mirror?"

I don't think I ever raged harder on someone at ladder ^^

I let people pause for things like mouse failures/phone calls for a few seconds all the time but when it takes too long I don't see a point in it. Letting me wait for a minute or more just because you can't get your stuff sorted out shows that you don't respect my time.

I don't really pause if something came up ( door etc). I would feel like that's wasting his time. I just let the game run its course with me being 2-3 mins afk. If i were still in it somehow, i'll play on. Otherwise i just concede.

I would say I'm one of these so called "unpausers".

I couldn't care less about people who are too stupid not to play ladder when they are expecting phone calls or visitors. And if you have a baby and you're the only one in the house, maybe you shouldn't play ladder then either.

When someone calls me and I'm not waiting for an important call I just let it ring or throw away my headset and talk while playing.

You people are the assholes, thinking I would waste my time waiting for you and your special needs.

For the OP. The only time I let people pause the game is when they give me an ETA so I can tab out. Something along the lines of "pp 1 min".

They're technically not obligated to wait for you and sacrifice their time because of issues you have but I do agree it's a complete dick move to unpause. Like come on, if you're laddering you obviously have 30 seconds to spare. If your life is so hectic that you can't even afford to spend 30 seconds to be nice to someone then you need to 1) reconsider how much you're overworking yourself and 2) ask why the hell you're on starcraft. People who pause under the excuse of "I don't have to wait, you shouldn't be wasting my time with your problems" are just complete assholes in my opinion.

That being said, there's obviously a limit. Pausing is annoying anyway because it breaks the flow of the game, and being Zerg I spend the first few minutes trying to get myself into a rhythm of army control, larva, scouting, etc over and over; that's just how I play most effectively and it's really disrupted by people who pause. I'll still wait for someone but yea its irritating. Also, I'm not gonna wait for over 3 minutes, because then it does start going into the "you shouldn't have laddered in the first place if you knew you had to do something" or "you're wasting my time" territory.

Also as a tip, try to be nice to people. Say gl hf in the beginning of the game, be friendly if a small conversation arises, etc. If you're likable people are more willing to grant you favors and wait for you. If you open the game with "Fucking protoss bitch" then I doubt anyone will wait no matter how good your excuse.

Who says they are 'expecting' a phone call or someone ringing their door bell? Stuff happens, how hard for you is it to wait for 1-2 minutes?

If you want a 100% guarantee there will be no pauses you should play vs the AI.

I think rather than 3 pauses, the game should allow 1 or 2 minutes of pause time that's unbreakable. It should give you enough time to either take your call, or explain yourself. If it's abused, hey, it's only a minute.

Because I know that a lot of people take life way too serious and feel like they need to be available for anyone at any point or otherwise people won't like them anymore or something. Just let the phone ring people, and call them back.

If there are any that doubt that letting your opponent do what he needs to do for a couple minutes is super cool and manner, this thread should make your realise your immense folly.

Fixing something terrible with something more terrible, yeah what a great solution.

On topic, if a guy says "pp", "1min" or whatever and then pauses then it's fine, but too many people just pause and don't say a word so I can see why some people are fed up with pausing and just automatically unpauses on anyone.
And even pausing/unpausing on the ladder isn't such a big deal, it's just a ladder game.

If people ask and give a rough time estimate, sure. I'll give them 2-3 minutes, tops. Any longer than that and they should just quit and take the loss. It's not like it's a huge deal to have 1 loss added to their record. That's what I do anyway. If a game gets interrupted and I think it'll take longer than a minute, I'll just bow out and give them the free win.
(Note, if they're miles ahead and obviously winning, I'll just do the quitting for them. No sense in making them take a loss if they've obviously won already.)

Pausing for longer, or not asking/notifying or anything just seems rude and I will unpause as I see fit. A movie theater doesn't stop the movie for you and make everyone wait if you've got a phone call. Why should I be obligated to wait for it? Now if this were a game between regulars or friends or even people you might know, sure. But we're talking random strangers here.
In my eyes, the pausee is under no obligation to agree, and he/she is doing a favor to the pauser by waiting for them. As such, I think I should have the ability to say "no, sorry. I'm not going to wait while you take a shit." and unpause if it's taking too long or there is no explanation why I should be waiting.

Comes down to respect. I respect their time and effort, just like they should respect mine. If they don't -> unpause, free win.

I unpause unless they asked beforehand. Watching people get butthurt about unpausing is always lots of fun as well cos it shows how arrogant they are to demand courtesy when they have given nothing themselves. If you want a pause have the decency to ask first.

I don't think anyone is special enough that they cannot take 5min or less out of their day to let their opponent answer the door. Also, I do not understand AT ALL the argument that pausing the game is BM. "It is so BM to get an important phone call while you are playing StarCraft" L O L Noobs are just hungry for free wins.

Well, here's one way to think about things:

I play Starcraft to have a fun and interesting game against challenging human opponents. I like to test myself and my ideas and my execution. And I like to see how things play out, for example, if I make a mistake at 6:00, will I be screwed at 7:00? If I micro well, will I win this battle, or is it hopeless? Let's find out!
Now, sadly interrupting the fun, something in real life happens. I don't expect it, you don't know what it is, it just happened and it requires my attention.
So, either I pause and you allow the pause, wasting 10-60s. Or I pause, you unpause, and I leave, wasting the entire length of time that we've already played. I mean, we went through 15:00 of a great game and soon enough we'll see the conclusion; you'd rather throw that away than wait a few seconds?
When you think about it this way, the reason I'm pissed when you refuse to allow the pause, is that you're wasting my time and yours by choosing to ruin a perfectly good game rather than wait a few seconds. Not to mention I think you're a total no-class bum with no sense of sportsmanship or courtesy.
I would never, ever unpause without at least asking for an explanation and waiting a bit, both because of common courtesy, and more importantly because I don't want to ruin the game for myself (or you). Do people really get more satisfaction from beating an afk person (ladder points, yay!) than they do from playing a good game?

As far as team games, don't you think it's 100x worse to ruin an entire game by unpausing when a person is unable to play, than it is to make several people wait a few seconds? If my options are 'pause' or 'leave' I will always attempt to pause for the sake of the game as a whole and my team mates. If I see you repeatedly unpause, I'll be forced to leave and hope my allies can control my units, but really... why ruin a perfectly good game like that?

The thing about 'you have to say something first' sort of makes sense, but sometimes it just isn't possible. If a keyboard fails, or something needs your attention RIGHT NOW, or something like that, it's not going to be possible to explain first. Recognize that fact and give the benefit of the doubt.

I'm also confused as to how anyone would gain an advantage by pausing? I mean, it's the middle of a battle, if I pause, it's not like I'm somehow gonna be better or you're gonna be worse when I unpause.

People who think there are no good reasons to pause, Idunno... you either have very little imagination, or you prioritize Starcraft way too highly. Or both.

tl;dr
You ought to allow pauses because waiting for a pause is better than wasting the entire length of time the game has gone on so far.

Definitely ask first and or warm the player that your going to pause by saying, i'm pausing or pp and DEFINITELY DEFINITELY warn them before unpausing. I always let people pause and I really hate it when they don't warn me before unpausing, I think that's extremely bad mannered specially since the guy just let you paused the game when he didn't have to.

If you want someone to pause the game 1) don't play cheesy and 2) Ask them before you pause. and give an explanation if they ask.

Random pauses are annoying and can throw people off their game. I am not one to unpause, but I do find it rude in that I can set aside some time to get my IRL stuff sorted for a session of ladder games, and my opponant doesn't have the foresight to do the same.

Now that's commitment.

Not really, that's common courtesy IMO. I feel even more strongly about it in team games; when I'm playing LoL and someone AFKs for 3 minutes, it's like "Dude, whatever you've got going on is less important than the experience of 9 other people". SC2 1v1 isn't as big a deal, but I still would never interrupt a game just to answer the phone or something.

P.S.

If you snap-unpause in a team game without giving someone a chance to explain, and you're my ally, I'm going to backstab you, because you're scum and you deserve it.

If i need to do something in middle of a laddergame ill leave instead of pause. Pause is just annoying for both and I don't see a reason for it to be on ladder.
