I don't like this attitude. If you are polite and something comes up, pausing is totally acceptable. I do think you should do your best to minimize reasons to pause before ladder games, but sometimes stuff is out of your control. Pausing happens in big tournaments all the time.

I've never really had anyone unpause in Starcraft 2 yet, but happened all the time in Warcraft 3. I allways tell people why i pause though.
|
In my experience if you explain and ask for permission its OK. Good manner is to say your back and going to unpause.

Wow, some people are really rude, unpausing immediately is not on, and any sort of rationalising about it is just a cover for trying to pick up easy ladder wins. It's a game, what's a few seconds waiting going to matter in the long run?
The only time I've had a bad experience with a pause was some guy who was BMing through the game in German, then paused, I asked him what was wrong, he snap unpaused and launched his attack. Pretty obnoxious, but that was the only time I've experienced this.

If your time is as valuable as you claim go play some game where you don't have to worry about other people wasting it at all. Like Solitaire.

Don't tell people to grow up. I'm 23 y/o and still I don't like it if someone just pauses without asking first. If someone pauses without saying anything in the first place, I'm just unpausing. I had some moments when someone paused and at the same moment I unpaused he said "sry, brb, someone's at the door", so I immediately paused again.
But still, I am usually a really mannered player, so i expect the people to ask first, and then pause. That's no problem for me, I can wait for 1-20 minutes then, if needed. I mean, you're not playing a board game with someone, and then just walk away without saying anything. Or if you play FIFA with someone, you don't pause and go to the toilet without saying anything, right? Grown ups don't do that.

Random pause = Wait 10s then turbo unpause
Pause + 1secplz = Wait 2 minutes max
Pause + Reason given = Wait at least 10 mins eg. Soz phone, soz door, soz baby cry, soz emergency etc
When people randomly pause without saying anything, i automatically assume its a BM pause, either trying to annoy you or try to make you hit the 'leave game' button by accident or both. Doesn't take more than 10s to give a reason for pausing. A disabled person with one arm and a finger could type something in 10s. Those with muscular or nerve conduction abnormalities will take 20s at most, typing "s-o-z", otherwise they'd have less than 9 constant APM, with which, i'm very sorry to say, won't get you very far in the game anyway.
Doesn't really matter what sort of emergency someone has, people should not expect opponents to allow a pause if they don't give a reason for it. The phone can wait 10s(if its REALLY important, you'll get a call back anyway, barring hollywood kidnapping scenarios), the door can wait 10s, a crying baby can wait 10s, your distended bladder/rectum can wait 10s unless you have some form of urinary/fecal incontinence or are below 10 years of age(shouldnt be playing this damn game anyway, its rated teen), your dog which implies it needs to piss outside can wait 10s.
Real emergencies like your old grandad keeling over clutching his chest, baby having a seizure, house on fire etc should warrant enough urgency for you to leave your computer immediately anyway. Sif care about pausing and/or losing when those things happen; I'd say you have more important things to worry about.
1secplz is just ambiguous to me, thus the 2 minute wait.

Rules to live by
1. Always ask beforehand. 2. Give a good estimate of how long it will take 3. Msg them before resuming the game 4. Thank them for their understanding

i waited five mins for one guy who said he had to answer the door and when he came back he lagged out anyway. it was a stupid waste of time. i learned it is best to just unpause immediately if there is a very strong chance you would've won anyway.

I guess you've never dealt with troll pausers then? There are many times on ladder, where I'll be winning a game, and the opponent will pause without explanation, just to try to annoy me. I don't see anything that could be so urgent, you couldn't take the time to write "brb 1 min" or something like that, to let me know that you are in fact leaving your computer and are coming back, not just being juvenile.

I am usually very nice and polite in game, often chat a bit after game as well so pausing isn't an issue as long as we had a bit of chat and he told me to wait a sec, personally as long as he asks if I am ready to unpause, I am fine with it. I will just read a bit during the wait, no big deal
|
If someone just pauses and doesn't say even sec please I will unpause it since I will want a reason for wasting my time. If someone says that "sec phone, sec baby yelling, sec doorbell", I will give him as much time as he needs but not an hour still.

Well, you can still wait 20 seconds. If he doesn't write anything in that time, whatever, unpause if you want. If you unpause before giving him reasonable time to write something then it's just rude, no matter how many troll pausers you've seen.

I think whether or not you have the luxury of ignoring the world around you while gaming strongly depends on your living circumstance. Obviously people with small children and family can end up in circumstances where they have to take a sudden break from time to time.
I think it is important to just write sth. really quick before or right after pausing so that the opponent knows what is going on. I never had anyone pause on me without explaining and I always waited but it also never took really long. So I don't know what happens if someone really tests my patience.

If someone just pauses without saying anything I will unpause. That's basically the most BM thing ever, letting me waste my time in front of a frozen screen when I don't even know wtf is going on.
And I will always unpause in team games no matter what. It is just absurd to let 7 people wait.
Then again I never pause myself either. If something comes up I'll just AFK or leave the game. I really don't like the idea of making other people wait for me.

I always wait if they give a reason. Just be mannered and warn before pausing, something like "ppp" is enough and then pause and give your reason.

Well of course I will wait a few seconds for an explanation, I never said I didn't. But saying that it's perfectly fine to pause the game, and leave for extended periods of time with no explanation, I don't agree with. It's usually better to say something before you pause anyways, to avoid ambiguity.

Make absolutely sure when you play you don't need to pause. People might agree and as soon as you get up they unpause anyway.

If I get a phonecall, I ignore it and call back after the game, If I am expecting visitors I will not ladder (and i'll ignore the door if I am not expecting people), although I cannot comment on having a child cry as I do not have one.
Random pauses are annoying and can throw people off their game. I am not one to unpause, but I do find it rude in that I can set aside some time to get my IRL stuff sorted for a session of ladder games, and my opponant doesn't have the foresight to do the same.
I'm exactly like this guy. From SC1 + SC2 I've prolly played over 15,000 games and I've probably paused less than 5 times in my entire life, only like lol 1 time it was cuz a spider was crawling next to my head on the wall lmfao... I only pause for crazy shit like that.
I think it's rude to pause for a phone call, or to text or some bullshit like that. You can call them back. When I'm in a game and focused definitely not taking a phone call, they can wait If I'm expecting an important call then I don't play competitively.

I unpause immediately, people have to learn it's just ladder, win or lose and find a new game, if something, comes up. quit I find pausing to be really bm

If you care about those other things more, then you won't mind taking a loss to ensure they are dealt with appropreately
