One thing I really missed in D2 were the tomes that you could read on the spot. They were much better in D1.

I felt almost fortunate that this was normal because playing Diablo 1 with the sound on scared the shit out of me as a kid Going along with the ALDARIS?!?!??!! comments... Isn't the rogue the original Kerrigan's voice? ^^

We also have an entire nation of refugees who are forced to make a desperate last stand against said clan, only to have a member of their royal family slowly become insane, slay his oldest friend and leave his nation to die to a horde of living dead. Yeah, sounds pretty damn childish to me.

"I can see what you see not. Vision milky, then eyes rot. When you turn they will be gone, Whispering their hidden song. Then you see what cannot be, Shadows move where light should be. Out of darkness, out of mind, Cast down into the Halls of the Blind." Voice acting in D1 was soooo far above that in D2, it was pathetic in D2 . And "Ahhhh, fresh meat." scared the shit out of me :p

Beating a dead horse here, but Diablo 1's atmosphere is waaaaaay cooler and darker than D2, even with all graphic advances.... Amen. The only good part in D2 is Act 1, the design of Act 2 / 3 / 5 is terrible. 4 is ok.

I was somewhat young when I played Diablo 2, and it wasn't scary at all. Maybe the armorer was a bit surprising, and I guess Duriel was very surprising and anxiety-causing. Diablo one had a much nicer atmosphere to it. The people talking felt real, and the environment always felt very dark. Diablo 2 improved so much with cutscenes and gameplay, but lost SO MUCH in atmosphere. Neither of the games had good in-game story though. Overall you could say Diablo 2 had a great story though, but that's only based off the cutscenes, which are completely untied to the gameplay. So many people left Blizzard since Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 were made. While Diablo 3 would be a pretty great game, it will certainly be different, but also interesting to see how it turns out (sorta like SC2)

But hey, that's only what we've seen so far, and so little of it. That game is nowhere near completion and we may witness some really disturbing scenes in later acts. For me it's alright whether it's a bloodbath or a colour fairy world. I'm more interested in it's gameplay

Yeah, sounds pretty damn childish to me. Warcraft universe is definitely not childish. It's harder to take seriously in WoW, though. Particularly after not only the graphics become an ugly cartoon, but the backstory is retconned into an ugly cartoon. (Sargeras was always a meanie evilpants herp derp.)

I remember reading through the manual for Warcraft 2, which contained a whole ton of backstory as well as depictions of orcs holding severed orc heads and whatnot. Not sure what prompted the more colorful, cartoony look, but it seemed unnecessary. I suppose experimentation is good though. I actually really liked the D2 settings, especially how they contrasted with eachother. You'd have this bright desert, blazing sun with vultures swarming over the place and then descend into a dark tomb. I may remember incorrectly, but I believe it's been said about D3 that you'll be starting out in a world where there isn't that much corruption or evil and then it'll slowly get worse and worse, and I'm quite fine with that. It leaves more of an impact if you have a reference to something beautiful and then see it defiled. It's not like the entire game is going to be rainbows and carebears and Dr.Snuggles.
