Glad I wasn't the only one terrified of the butcher in D1

I was a sorc on D1 and the butcher was fucking hard to kill. Had to keep running and I would shoot him with my infinite arrows but shit took time enough for me to think he was regen faster

Damn Diablo was a scary game. I used to get creeped out playing it alone in my basement sometimes. I can't believe I was allowed to play that when I was like 10 ..

Diablo 1 was the shit. I played that game when I was around 10 years old and the atmosphere was really creepy. Tristram song is art.

The initial screenshots for D3 don't look that great and Blizzard North (original core of guys behind Diablo and D2) left Blizz long time ago.

Let's hope for the best though~

Well, the Blizzard North guys went ahead and made Hellgate London. I honestly don't think losing them could be bad in any way :p .

Apparently Blizzard North was fired out because their progress with D3 sucked

d1 was scary and much harder than d2, I remember going into hell and being terrified, I don't think I ever beat d1 as a kid.

I just realized.. what you realized. I started playing when I was around 11-12 (when I started playing starcraft ^_^) and wow, I've never been addicted to a game like D2 in my whole life (not even WoW was as addicting). Now that I see this, this game is really fucking creepy but I LOVE IT and I can't wait for D3. I hope it turns out good ^_^.

Now reading this thread, I had started playing again, USWest Hardcore Ladder. It's been about.. 3 or so months since I've last logged in and I've only lost 2 mules which probably had nothing important in them but O_O I think I might start playing again.

Man I feel ashamed that I never played D1, just D2 Expansion.
I should give it a try ^_^

Hellgate: London had tons of potential. It was just very much rushed.

Wow, very nicely put together. It does remind me of when I played D2. It always did have this very unsettling and disturbing undertone. With all of the pentagrams, the hero losing his mind it was insane. Nicely put together thread by OP.

Let's see, we have a tribal group of powerful humanoids who slaughter an entire nation, led by bloodthirsty clan chiefs and warlocks performing occult, demonic rituals, all the while struggling internally for power over the clans in a flurry of betrayals and temporary alliances. We also have an entire nation of refugees who are forced to make a desperate last stand against said clan, only to have a member of their royal family slowly become insane, slay his oldest friend and leave his nation to die to a horde of living dead.

Yeah, sounds pretty damn childish to me.

Warcraft universe is definitely not childish. It's harder to take seriously in WoW, though. Particularly after not only the graphics become an ugly cartoon, but the backstory is retconned into an ugly cartoon. (Sargeras was always a meanie evilpants herp derp.)

I remember reading through the manual for Warcraft 2, which contained a whole ton of backstory as well as depictions of orcs holding severed orc heads and whatnot. Not sure what prompted the more colorful, cartoony look, but it seemed unnecessary. I suppose experimentation is good though.

I actually really liked the D2 settings, especially how they contrasted with eachother. You'd have this bright desert, blazing sun with vultures swarming over the place and then descend into a dark tomb. I may remember incorrectly, but I believe it's been said about D3 that you'll be starting out in a world where there isn't that much corruption or evil and then it'll slowly get worse and worse, and I'm quite fine with that. It leaves more of an impact if you have a reference to something beautiful and then see it defiled. It's not like the entire game is going to be rainbows and carebears and Dr.Snuggles.

This appeals to me greatly. Although it was the same in D1 and D2 too, but that is a really great way to build the atmosphere.

I have to say that the books also feel really cheesy and bad. I haven't read even a page nor do I care to, but I'm pretty sure they ruin the whole story of Diablo.

The epilogue to D1 is creepy as hell when you think about it. It's not as visceral as the Butcher or the dungeons, but my god is it ever cerebral.

Sorry guys but Diablo 2 was a piece of shit. Playing it was like reading the weekly Bleach. There was no fun, just grinding. The only 'fuck, that was scary' moment I had was when I was fighting Mephisto for the first time and he shot that ice ball that took off half my health. Other than that it was a shit game.

Just because there are badly drawn dead bodies in it doesn't make it scary. Here's a dead body:

No arms!

I'm going to have to say you have a horrible taste in games.
We have multiple brackets generated in advance. Relax . (Kennigit) I just simply do not understand how it can be the time to play can be 22nd at 9:30 pm PST / midnight the 23rd at the same time. (GGzerg)

I personally thought Diablo II and I was not scary. That being said however, I was introduced to Diablo waayyy later than you guys. Maybe at age 14 or 15 was when I got really, really addicted. By then, the graphics had already aged until they were just as scary as Doom 1. I just played Diablo II on USEast grinding for the best gear. To me, the scariest game is probably Half-Life 2. Those poison head crabs really get to me.

I like this idea. Well, actually we know D2 is like this too.
