While Diablo 1 was overall much scarier than 2, I think there were a few areas that were comparable to D1 in D2. Like some dungeons in Act 1 and the Monastery when it gets darker. The rest of the acts weren't so scary. Then again, I was very glad when I reached the caves in D1 because the area before it was much, much, much scarier.

One thing I really missed in D2 were the tomes that you could read on the spot. They were much better in D1.

Back in Diablo 1 it was a common practice to turn off the music to stop lag in multiplayer games, mostly because it ran off CD and would make the game stop every now and then as your 2x cdrom would seek.

I felt almost fortunate that this was normal because playing Diablo 1 with the sound on scared the shit out of me as a kid

Haha, nice to see that everyone else shit their pants when the butcher came out of that room shouting, "FRESH MEAT!!"

Let's see, we have a tribal group of powerful humanoids who slaughter an entire nation, led by bloodthirsty clan chiefs and warlocks performing occult, demonic rituals, all the while struggling internally for power over the clans in a flurry of betrayals and temporary alliances. We also have an entire nation of refugees who are forced to make a desperate last stand against said clan, only to have a member of their royal family slowly become insane, slay his oldest friend and leave his nation to die to a horde of living dead.

Yeah, sounds pretty damn childish to me.

Reading the Book on the level with teh "Hall of the Blind" = best Diablo moment ever.

"I can see what you see not.
Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone,
Whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be,
Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind,
Cast down into the Halls of the Blind."

Voice acting in D1 was soooo far above that in D2, it was pathetic in D2 .

And "Ahhhh, fresh meat." scared the shit out of me :p

I played throug the single player a good amount of times before getting in to Bnet. So i felt all the atmosphere and creepiness of the game, as well as the storyline and all that stuff that makes this game the best ARPG! So i realy pitty the ones who started right on Bnet. without playing the SP. Cus Bnet. is all about geting rushed to hell and farm godly items And that way u miss 70% or so of the game's true meaning

P.S. All i said refers to D1 as well;)

Not nearly as creepy as Diablo 1. Even more if you include music.
Beating a dead horse here, but Diablo 1's atmosphere is waaaaaay cooler and darker than D2, even with all graphic advances....

Amen.
The only good part in D2 is Act 1, the design of Act 2 / 3 / 5 is terrible.
4 is ok.

I wish Diablo 3 will have more scarey elements to it like Doom 3 had (or other horror games like penumbra, resident evil). I bet anything that won't really be the case. It will just be expanding on Diablo 2's multiple environments... more jungle, desert, by golly jee maybe even swamps and prairies.

I was somewhat young when I played Diablo 2, and it wasn't scary at all. Maybe the armorer was a bit surprising, and I guess Duriel was very surprising and anxiety-causing.

Diablo one had a much nicer atmosphere to it. The people talking felt real, and the environment always felt very dark. Diablo 2 improved so much with cutscenes and gameplay, but lost SO MUCH in atmosphere.
Neither of the games had good in-game story though. Overall you could say Diablo 2 had a great story though, but that's only based off the cutscenes, which are completely untied to the gameplay.

So many people left Blizzard since Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 were made. While Diablo 3 would be a pretty great game, it will certainly be different, but also interesting to see how it turns out (sorta like SC2)

Butcher was like the snow monster, fucking fast and imba (when you are still level 5 or so). Its like no way to beat it unless you come back for it at higher level.

Sure that D3, from what we've seen so far, is a lot brighter and has significantly less blood and gore. Maybe Blizzard is being careful for safe entry to markets which demand minimum amount of violence in video games, especially China. IIRC WoW has been being scrutinied to the smallest bits and modified a lot of graphic details, in terms of gore and violence, so that it fits with the 'tradition' and 'culture' of the country, or at least the officials think so. It is very likely that Bliz will take actions, implementing changes so that their next major release will be welcomed in such a huge market like China. Which of course will be followed by rage from hardcore fans and enthusiasts...

But hey, that's only what we've seen so far, and so little of it. That game is nowhere near completion and we may witness some really disturbing scenes in later acts. For me it's alright whether it's a bloodbath or a colour fairy world. I'm more interested in it's gameplay

When I think about it the game is pretty scary but for some reason I don't remember being scared at all when I played it for the first time(7/8 years old). The only thing on my mind was:

Items,Items,Items.....More items ! :D

Warcraft universe is definitely not childish. It's harder to take seriously in WoW, though. Particularly after not only the graphics become an ugly cartoon, but the backstory is retconned into an ugly cartoon. (Sargeras was always a meanie evilpants herp derp.)

I remember reading through the manual for Warcraft 2, which contained a whole ton of backstory as well as depictions of orcs holding severed orc heads and whatnot. Not sure what prompted the more colorful, cartoony look, but it seemed unnecessary. I suppose experimentation is good though.

I actually really liked the D2 settings, especially how they contrasted with eachother. You'd have this bright desert, blazing sun with vultures swarming over the place and then descend into a dark tomb. I may remember incorrectly, but I believe it's been said about D3 that you'll be starting out in a world where there isn't that much corruption or evil and then it'll slowly get worse and worse, and I'm quite fine with that. It leaves more of an impact if you have a reference to something beautiful and then see it defiled. It's not like the entire game is going to be rainbows and carebears and Dr.Snuggles.

I cannot believe some of you are just noticing this now. One of the reasons I fell in love with the original and the sequel. That and the tile set is so rigid and gothic. Something that feels missing in Diablo 3 thus far.

I used to restart my character when I got to the church and saw the dead body outside... such good memories from D1. I still go back and play through it every now and again (except now I don't restart if I get the butcher quest).

D2 is good in cutscenes but no real atmosphere ingame unlike D1. That said when you're young (like 6-7) you never get creeped out.

"I must be getting close!" [On my brother's warrior entering hell in D1)
"How does he know??" - me
"Oh, I dunno, maybe all the blood in the walls or something?" - my brother
"I guess.." - me
