Just because there are badly drawn dead bodies in it doesn't make it scary. Here's a dead body:

I'm going to have to say you have a horrible taste in games.
He is harsh but i think he has a point. Diablo II can be HIGHLY addictive but it is not a great game if you don't like runs/grind. And to be honest i think that disliking grind fests isn't bad taste. That why a lot of people prefer Diablo I for single player.
Ah the memories. I really hope D3 will live the hype. Like everyone has said, the gore and creepiness will go out, don't hold your breath on it. I just hope the drop system gets reworked but I would like to see the same essence to it, another thing is the randomly generated mob names and the super uniques, I really want those to stay. And maybe some other things to return like they did with D1-->D2 some items, places(tristram), stuff like that to appeal to the D2 crowd that played it for years.

On topic, I can guarantee you you totally missed some of the more gruesome things. There are some seriously sick torture devices you can find in some places.
By the way the best term to describe the diablo theme is "gothic". No, not that "gothic" fad stereotype thing. dictionary.com: adj. noting or pertaining to a style of literature characterized by a gloomy setting, grotesque, mysterious, or violent events, and an atmosphere of degeneration and decay.
edit: oh yeah how could I forget.
I remember way back in the day when i was still a kid me and my brother shared a room and we had our computer in there too. One night when I was sleeping he was staying up really late and he was doing the chaos sanctuary. When he opened the last seal he turned the volume on the speakers ALL the way up. Now mind you I'm just sleeping there probably having nice dreams and the next thing I hear is "NOT EVEN DEATH WILL SAVE YOU FROM ME".
Imagine waking up at like 1AM to that.
awww so cute.
The first time I played Diablo was like "Dude, this game is wrong!" I literally had no idea what I was looking at, it was awesome and disturbing at the same time. The other game that struck me like that was Blood but this was a whole new level of creepiness

Diablo 1 and 2 was masterpieces, the atmosphere, music, sound, gameplay just everything was amazing and made Diablo what it was.
It won't be possible to create a similar feel with the new 3d technologies etc, Diablo 3 will be fun but will be nowhere close to D1 or D2.
Just listen to that theme, it has a blissful and serene feeling to it. Makes me feel like playing through Diablo 1 again with a friend (with music on, i always play without it).
Also, for those who loved the Tristram theme should hear this one.
Ignore the video and listen to the song, it's insane.
I can see what you see not Vision milky then eyes rot When you turn they will be gone Whispering their hidden song Then you see what cannot be Shadows move where light should be Out of darkness, out of mind Cast down into the Halls of the Blind.
Diablo 1 was way scarier ! Running around in the church's basement and hearing children cry and scream ... I shit in my pants the first time I went thru there. Oh, and meeting The Butcher is also epic ! "Argh ! Fresh meat !" still kinda spooks me out.
diablo 1 was much scarier than diablo 2. It's theme and music was more gothic. While diablo 2 had just as much sick stuff it was too colourful to be as scary.
diablo had much better theme, atmosphere and creepyness to it
diablo 2 had much better re playability, questing and boss fights.
diablo 3 looks more like diablo 2 than diablo 1 to me. I'm sure it will be a great game but the story will probably be crap like sc2's was.
I gotta say my favorite scene is from Diablo2 when you finally get to the right tomb. I was playing single player and I was psyched to go and fight a Prime Evil. Then I walk in~
LOOKING FOR BAAL?
And a fucking scorpion death thing hits me three times and I can't run I don't have thawings or cold resist and I die like a bitch.
Yes, Duriel, you dirty motherfuck, I was looking for Baal.
That Lachdanan knight in Diablo 1 sounds exactly 100% like Tyriel in Diablo 2.
Btw many games from the mid nineties were scary as fuck. I especially remember Doom and x-com. It may sound weird but simple graphics can make a game much more creepy than advanced graphics.
I really think Matt Uelman should compose and release an album with a 12-string as a centerpiece (that guitar in the Tristram theme is a 12-string, right?)
Diablo 1 was scary (as someone mentioned above) because you couldn't see much and were walking slowly. In addition to that demons could actually kill you. Ahh, and that music

Diablo 2's only about grinding if you let it be about grinding (mostly multiplayer). If you don't tweak yourself and get rushed through, you can actually play the game.
When you play it through, it's very exciting to find rare items that give you just enough damage to overcome that boss that's killed you 10 times in a row.
And my youthful scary game was Ultima VIIII (free with the computer!). Plowing through creepy catacombs late at night, being attacked by infinitely resurrecting skeletons, trying to steal from houses (thanks guides!) and being caught and executed by the friendly neighborhood fire mage.

I'm scared to think about what Activision/Blizzard might do to D3......
