Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.
Combat uses a tactical real-time with pause system - positioning your party and coordinating attacks and abilities is one of the keys to success. The world map is dotted with unique locations and wilderness ripe for exploration and questing. You’ll create your own character and collect companions along the way – taking him or her not just through this story, but, with your continued support, through future adventures. You will engage in dialogues that are deep, and offer many choices to determine the fate of you and your party. …and you'll experience a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out.
We are excited at this chance to create something new, yet reminiscent of those great games and we want you to be a part of it as well.
Project Eternity has reached its original target funding goals after 24 hours. Additional stretch goals are now available at the links above.
Well there you have it. Not Neverwinter Nights 3, Fallout 4 or a new Planescape, but their own new IP. I think it's about time they started their own story. I think it is very interesting that they were unable to acquire the funding needed the traditional way, as it is clear within the first day that they will exceed their target several times over. Of course the sidebar says the release date is all the way over in April 2014, but today is also the day Black Mesa was finally released, so it's back to the waiting game!

You have no godly idea how cautiously joyous I am right now.
Also, "Planescape". No "t".

My bad. Those are two very different games!

Not even a day since its been up on Kickstarter and it has already been pledged $500K. Here's to hoping this is another brilliant Obsidian game but without all the game-breaking bugs associated with their past titles.

Like I mentioned in my OP, I am really pumped for this! I will back it up a few times during the month, most likely; )
I put the extra info you provided into the OP!

I have backed the $20 option. It seems like a great deal to get a classic RPG at that price range.
I credit Obsidian for creating for myself what I consider the greatest and most fun gameplay mechanic I have experienced yet in an immersive RPG: The Crossroads Keep minigame in Neverwinter Nights 2.

Backed it with $35 right away. This has so much potential.

Could we change the title to indicate that this is basically the modern Torment/IWD/BG2 ? I think a lot more people would be interested in this if they knew what "Project Eternity" is all about
Anyways, still debating between the 65 or the 35 dollar backing ...

Sort of interesting for Obsidian to kickstarter this. As someone else said though, I'm "cautiously joyous".
Honestly, I don't even think Obsidian needs to be this ambitious. If they could simply match the quality of one of their previous IPs with a release that's not bug-ridden, they'd have already outdone themselves.

Very nice news. Anything new from Obsidian is good news to me. Want to see some more concept thingies before laying cash down, though.

Backed with $20 this is so rad finally a reason to be excited for in the future of gaming.

This might be the first video game kickstarter I support. Obsidian games are often flawed and/or buggy, but I always enjoy the core ideas that they try to implement. Alpha Protocol and Knights of the Old Republic 2 are objectively bad games but I loved the hell out of them. I hope with a kickstarter they can release an actually finished game for once.

You might want to put "Obsidian kickstart RPG" in the title as Project Eternity doesn't say anything.
