I must say, though, that the number of players who face career-wretching injuries should really, really be a signal to coaches and managers alike to wake up and take ergonomics and player health much more seriously. Hell yes. One thing that drives me completely mad is when I see tournaments and coaches allowing players on chairs/desks that are set up to destroy your wrists. I mean stuff like... -No arm support on your chair. So you end up putting most of your arm weight on your wrists. -Desks that encourage you to rest your wrists on the sharp edge of the desk. This is TERRIBLE for your wrists. Think about the tendons going through the tunnels (yes the carpal tunnels, etc.) in your wrist, then pinching them half shut with a 90 degree hard wooden object. Figure that will irritate the crap out of them? Yes it will. You need to place your hands such that you are not putting a lot of stress or pressure on the wrist area itself. One way to do this is to get wrist pads but put the meaty parts of your palms/thumbs on them... NOT your wrists. Another way is to have a chair that allows you to put your forearms on the chair arms 90% of the time while playing. Other things that are supposed to help... And take lots of breaks. Exercise (like stretching and strength training for arms/hands). Don't get dehydrated. Don't overdo salt. If you are getting irritation in the pinky and 2nd to last finger, I'd concentrate more on shoulder and neck fatigue. Practice good posture, stretch a lot, build up some strength. Take lots of breaks. Sometimes you have to take a couple of weeks off of the computer. Better that than ruin your wrists for life.

The number of pros with wrist injuries is truly alarming. There has been all the research that is needed, people just refuse to educate themselves on it, thinking that it won't happen to them. Well, newsflash, it does.

Basically, a tendon must be as strong as the muscle it is attached to... and yet the tendon is much smaller than the muscle. blood vessels are weak structures. tendon's have the strength they do despite their small size because they have very few blood vessels. Thus, when a tendon is damaged it can take much longer to heal than any injured muscle. as an example, "Tommy John Surgery" requires about 18 months for a full recovery. and this is with the best orthopedic surgeons in the country overseeing this recovery. tendon and ligament injuries end the careers of musicians and athletes every year.
