Since I would feel bad polluting this thread further

I opened this one. Here is to share about series you have seen.

Insatiable - Netflix
[image loading]

I almost skipped this one, because of how aggressively it was marketed to me. Then my interest reemerged when Husky closed his youtube channel and I thought for a second, this actress looks a lot like his GF. Eventually I just wanted ONE episode to waste some odd 40 minutes and binged it until 5 am.

This series is stupid, until it is not. You know how in Suits they tried to change directions and make Mike into a banker, but lacked the skill to execute it in an interesting way and instead of an evolving series, we got a wallpaper/jargon change until they 180°ed and stuck to what they were good at? This is what makes this series special, they break the structure, with success. It is like a disgusting joke, where the comedian just keeps going to see how far they can push it. I laughed out loud at times. There isn't a redeemable character to be found, life sucks and it is beautiful. It is so over the top at times, but fully self aware. It blends teeny movie vibes with the absurd and I think it will alienate fans of either genre. It is one of the most original works I've seen in the last 10 years. I'd say, if you like Buffy or Firefly this might be for you, though it really stands on it's own.
I was shocked to see how many of the actors are actually from the south, since I didn't buy any of their accents for a second. Maybe it is the attempt to speak southern, while still pronouncing clearly, really odd...

TLDR: Binged. Original, unusual, for fans of both, the absurd and Teenie Movies, but not either.

The good place

First season is pretty good and a makes philosophy actualy interesting at times while being funny.

Second season blurns this playbook while going off a cliff causing an explosion on the way down.

We should preface where we watched these. I watched this on netflix.

American Vandal on Netflix I just binged. Its actually really amazing. The concept is pretty cringy at first but the way they play off of the "true crime" shows on Netflix is just the start. They do some really amazing storytelling with "found footage" and the back half of the first season is some pretty amazing stuff.

Production values are pretty good with some legitimate cinematography and editing.

I have watched Money Heist on Netflix and after the first season i don't think i will continue. It's one of those crime shows that want to be clever so hard but in the end is just a series of stupid plotpoints connected with coincedence that are past off as pure genius. The promise of it all is so ridiculous that they have no other way but to go fantasy to make it work somehow. And of course on one hand the people involed are all so fucking clever but because then they have to make really stupid mistakes all the time to make the plot interesting. But what bugs me the most is the lazyness of the writing to set those plot points in motion. Like, i would really like to know how the laws of acoustics work in that world, the amount of time people can't hear other people plotting loudly and openly 3 meters away from them has to go double digits.

Norsemen - Netflix
[image loading]

It is two season, 6 episodes per season, 30 minutes per episode, so a total runtime of 6 hours. It is not even in the same realm of brilliance as monty python, but it is the only thing I can think of to compare it to.
You know how in real life you have to commit a capital crime in Norway to improve your living standards? If not check out Norway's prisons. + Show Spoiler +

This series contrasts modern political correctness with the viking-age and derives a rather surreal humor from it.
Sadly they focus too much on the one character that constantly breaks the fourth wall, which destroys the immersion. And immersion is weirdly enough one of the strong points, since yes it is the viking age, but a slave that is meant to be buried alive just won't lay down and complains that it goes against his self-preservation. 3 of the 30 minutes of each episode are extremely gory, just to keep the contrast sharp, which might be too much for some.
The other weak point is that in the end, the series is made up of 5 running jokes, that even in just 6 hours, if you binge, become rather dull. The guy I choose for the poster is the leader of a sister village, not the main village, and here they finally explore some different themes.

TLDR: If you can stomach short bursts of gore and like absurd humor then check this out I say.

I watched this recently. I love Janet but it went downhill pretty quickly after the first season.

The Expense - SyFy

Series was really good. For a SyFy series, I really liked it.

Amazon took the series for the fourth season in 2019. Hope they can fallow it well.

1983

The year is 2003, the fall of Polish communism never happened, and the Iron Curtain is still in place. In this dark alt-history thriller, a naïve law student and a world-weary detective uncover a conspiracy that has tyrannized Poland for the past 2 decades.

I was pretty skeptical about it in the beginning (knowing that the quality of Polish productions is as random as it gets) but I was very pleasantly surprised.

If you're into political thrillers and espionage movies this should be right down your alley.

Watching this and liking it so far. The politics feel weird but the English dub is good which is nice so I don't have to always be looking at the screen.

I just started watching Modern Family and I am 100% in love with this show. It's hilarious, the characters are well-developed, and somehow by the end of each episode it still manages to tug at my heartstrings.

Yeah Modern Family was definitely one of my soft spots for a long time. If I had to give a power ranking it would probably be: Jay>Phil>>Manny=Cam>Claire>pretty much everyone else. This being given it's the cast is strong and diverse and the show stays consistent for over the years, which is not easy to do.
There's something about Ed O'Neill making him so wholesome in the show lol, maybe it's just because he's supposed to be the old, wise, successful guy.

And with an acceptable amount of older generation/ casual racism and homophobia that he's legitimately trying to overcome, which is impressive because it's so easy to be set in your ways when you're that old.

It is a feat in writing how they're able to balance that while keeping him as the "father figure" of the show. Guy has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu from the Gracie family, hes low key in the 1% most deadly actors in the business.

Love and Fortune - Netflix

Audio only in Japanese!
How to love a minor in Japan. She 31, he 15 both like movies and are fans of the same director. After she lost her Job she never really became an adult and drifts through life, working as an usher in a cinema. Albeit a little simple, she is so, so relateable.
This series was a suprise, it deeply moved me. It is finished, it tells what it wants to tell in it's 12 episodes. I think I finished watching it a couple of weeks ago, but only today I reflected about the ending and what it means, before I was emotionally too involved and so the ending left me flabbergasted. Not dissapointed, just truly confused.

About the ending (no-spoilers): It might be an overinterpretation, since it feels a little like analysing a poem, however considering the aspirations that gleam through the fabric that is the rest of the series, I think it actually is fantastic. It's like a well written essay that does not try to judge or conclude, but to be attentive and represent all ideologies fairly.

The supporting roles of her original Ex-Boyfriend and the friendly co-worker at the office job in comparison to the rest of the stellarly written roles feel shoe-horned.

TLDR: While sophisticated and a little artsy at times, also grounded, griping and relateable.

Currently on season 7... watching with my gf
"How I met your Mother", "Friends" and "Big Bang Theory" while good, are the terrible quality imitations in comparison; this is probably the best sitcom around and will stay that way.
I had watched random episodes before, but following a story line makes it even better.

Hopefully some of our younger members can enjoy it
