About a month ago, I released Repalyzer 1.0. It's a free offline app that reads your SC:R replay folder and tells you things about yourself you maybe didn't want to know. 1.1.0 just came out, and a lot has happened since 1.0, so here's a short write-up.
Some backstory. I coach in CPL, and for a long time people have been asking me pretty much the same questions.
- Why do I lose PvZ?
- Is my build too slow?
The answers were almost always in their own replays already. I wanted to give people a way to find them on their own, so our time together could go to the stuff that actually takes them to the next level.
So the whole summer I was planning this - an app that goes through all your replays and gives you those answers straight away. Then you don't wait for a coach to tell you what's wrong, you fix it and move on to the next thing. And you improve step by step, on solid foundations, not by randomly changing stuff after every loss.
A hard part was the simulation. To get economy, supply, army value, and so on, you basically have to replay the game action by action, command by command as the real engine does. If one tiny thing is off, the game drifts. Most of my September and October was stuff like:
- nukes being way too strong (and sometimes hitting the wrong thing)
- valkyries vs valkyries doing weird stuff
- mind-controlled carriers
- dropships that couldn't unload at the map edge
- cancelled nydus canals
All of these happen in maybe 1 in a few thousand games, but when you test on 10k+ replays, they all happen.
Anyway, what's new in 1.1.0:
- Notes and tags. write notes on any replay - how you won, why you lost, what your coach told you, or what to get from the groceries; I don't judge. Tag games too, and filter or search by both
- Predictability score. This is the one I'm most excited about. For each matchup it looks at your openings, your follow-ups, then rates you from 0 to 100 for how easy you are to read. You can also check opponents before you play them again: what they repeat, and what worked for you against them
- copy a build straight into sagi.gg, or import a sagi.gg build and see where you were late, early, or forgot the thing completely
- post-game report now looks at your whole session. After 2+ games you get your record, one thing to fix from each game, and the problem that came up most. + Show Spoiler +
it's usually supply blocks and hotkey usage.
- "what keeps coming up" on the dashboard counts your main mistake across your last 20 games, so you work on habits and not on one tilted game. This is basically what I try to help ppl in CPL.
- Army value chart on the units tab. Hover over it to see who was ahead and by how much
. Winners are picked better. About 0.8% of replays still get it wrong, and you can click the badge to fix it.
A bunch of engine fixes, better ShieldBattery replay support, and fewer replays get stopped by the desync check.
Some things I learned:
Writing release notes is somehow harder than writing the code, since AI does all the coding nowadays.
"Works on my pc" means nothing.
It's not perfect. The installer is unsigned because I'm not paying for a certificate for a free tool, so Windows will yell at you.
You need SC:R installed for the simulation parts, and it's windows only.
