Let me spell those out for you - "shit" and "fuck".
See, those words are vulgar, but they're harmless. They refer to defecating and procreation.
"Rape" is a word for the most traumatizing violent crime that happens in our societies, and an alarmingly large proportion of women have been victims of it.
Using it metaphorically to describe dominating someone in an impressive, manly way is offensive.
And yes, we know you don't mean it literally. That's why it's a metaphor. If you call a stingy person a "jew", you're not literally saying they practice Judaism, you're using a xenophobic stereotype as a metaphor for miserliness.

I think shit and fuck could very well be as harmful as rape. Fuck easily conjures up images of sexual acts, while shit could really refer to so many strange and offensive things. If anything, "kill," or "nuke" connote so much more violence, and refer to the very most evil thing in society, which is taking another life. The point is that it's useless to endlessly bisect definitions of what is appropriate and inappropriate language.
In my view, racial slurs are not appropriate because they relate to inherent aspects of a person that cannot be changed, and in that sense are offensive at the most fundamental level of person-hood. Whereas pejorative terms which highlight events, instances, or qualities that can very much be overcome; in fact, walking on eggshells around victims is in many ways an insult to their attempts to achieve a sense of normalcy.
Anyways, this argument is a strange one, since the internet is not a discretely public space, or even a space with recognizable limitations or codes of conduct, while Esports themselves occupy such a bizarre liminal space that it is very difficult to determine the extent to which online interaction should conform to social and cultural decorum, and whether, if at all, the videogame can evolve into a mainstream franchise.

Rape is pretty bad, and disturbingly common (I've heard "1 in 4 women" statistic quite a few times), but there are plenty of things that are worse. I'd say just about anything that could be construed as "Torture" would be worse, and doubly so if it involves any kind of mutilation- though this is all just a semantics rant of mine.
Anyway, at the root of any word or phrase used is Intent. If there is no intent to offend involved in the use of a word or phrase, then you are a fucking retard if you take offense to it.
|
Intent doesn't matter when it comes to communication.
Context and how your audience will understand your words is what matters; intent is wholly irrelevant.

As odd as it is, I have to agree with Charles Barkley rather than Geoff even though they're so similar in so SO many ways. "Athletes are not role models". Same extends to professional players / representatives of starcraft 2. They aren't supposed to fit some mold but rather be themselves and let the community embrace the personalities they like (IdrA, Destiny, Artosis).

Problem here is that communicative abilities differ and sarcasm and irony are big part of language which can make understanding intent very difficult, especially over the interWeBz. Not only does it have to do with understanding intent, but also judging when it's appropriate to offense in a light manner, which also can be extremly difficult since you often don't know what the fuck is on the other persons mind.
If things can go wrong, they will, that's all I'm saying. Other than that I kind of agree.

**SOME MINOR SPOILERS**
The last drunk cast was hilarious, because half the guys were effing loaded. This time around, they took a few sips, and then started talking for an hour about controversial/taboo words, and girls in e-sports. There were literally multiple occurrences where Tyler didn't say a word for what felt like thirty or so minutes.
I was personally very disappointed with what will be the last show for Incontrol. I felt that with Destiny in the call - and the alcohol involved - that they had a real opportunity to get silly, and give the viewers some real laughs to lighten the 'mood'. If this is something that perhaps you were looking forward to, you won't find it in this episode. They could have ended Geoff's tenure on a much higher note in my opinion. I enjoyed the compilation video, but the sendoff didn't do justice to the personality.
Just my two cents. (Eagerly anticipating the show's return!)

Uh, who said anything about ethics?
Intent and ethics have no bearing whatsoever on whether or not a speaker fails to communicate because they pick words inappropriate to the current context.
