I didn't like this season much but the finale did a decent job of wrapping things up in an acceptable fashion. Dexter/Lumen relationship was handled correctly in that Dexter felt like he was able to save a vulnerable woman to make up for not being there for Rita. It also puts Dexter back into the broken guy who can't get rid of his own Dark Passenger, and having to deal with it alone (this is vital in order for the series to continue).
Deb's development was done well. She started as a black and white no nonsense cop but it is believable how she was able to relate to the barrel girls (when changing a character it is good to make the source of the change another deep seated event important in that character's life). Her realization through watching the tapes and empathizing allowed her to let the vigilantes go in the end. Now she is a person who can't take the easy route of relying on black and white policeman ethics, but must now search her own feelings about what is "right" or "wrong" in a situation. This may lead to her being able to accept (at least a little if not completely) Dexter's killings in future seasons.
The Quinn situation was handled too quickly but is ultimately acceptable. They're not gonna show the tedious process it would take to clear Quinn of suspicions cause it would be deadly dull so stop complaining about that. It's an artistic liberty I'm glad they took (and what really matters for the story is the result at the end: Quinn is cleared thanks to Dexter. Quinn was never some kind of pure crusader cop anyways (one of the first memorable scenes we saw with him was him stealing money from a crime scene) so it is believable that his love for Deb would keep him from acting on his suspicions (yes they are still just suspicions) about Dexter's murders. I never liked Quinn and always wanted Lundy to be the brilliant good guy acting as Dexter's foil, so I'm glad dumb Quinn didn't get to expose him.
Overall I'd say the plot development and story of this season were solid. They just weren't as interesting or intense or entertaining as the first 2 seasons. Which is a problem. But family man/dad/emo Dexter will never go back to being the awesome sociopath he was back then so they did the best they could I guess. I started watching the show precisely because Dexter's sociopathic outlook was so interesting and funny when he was looking at normal human activities so this show is getting less and less interesting for me as there is more typical emotional drama now. I can still see though that the writing of the show itself is still solid. (I can't believe I just typed all that when I was killer exams coming up).

On December 14 2010 03:13 TrainFX wrote: I see a lot of people saying that the finale wasn't as "exciting" as they had hoped for but I really think the excitement was there for the parts that warranted it. The scene with dexter/lumen and deb was incredible. The whole deb and quinn storyline while it may not be as exciting now seems very promising for next season, lots of drama? Also I think we can ALL agree that the whole liddy thing going away was a godsend from the writers.
Personally I sum this finale up as a very satisfying ending to the season, anything else to describe it just seems too focused. Ya exactly. The finale was just amazing. I almost stopped watching in the middle of this season cuz it was getting really boring and predictable, but the last 4 episodes were just epic. The finale was predictable, but they made stuff happen in an amazing way and now i'm really looking forward to the next season.

I'm shocked as to how critical Dexter fans on this site are. "They should have done this, or that blah blah blah..." Here's some explanation: + Show Spoiler +1. Quinn&Liddy - When the Blood was pointed out on his shoe he was already panicked, being questioned and what not. Seeing that blood there for the first time Quinn freaked and assumed the worst, as many of us would do. Making up a lie to your lieutenant on the spot would be very hard. Once Dexter got rid of the blood evidence all the cops had to go on was his finger prints on the van, the equipment, and the phone calls. The equipment would eventually be found out to have been taken by Liddy and not Quinn. The phone calls can be explained by being friends. The fingerprints can be explained by what really happened. Liddy called Quinn to meet and Quinn couldn't find him there. They really don't have that much on him without the blood.
2. Dexter&Quinn- Dexter knew if he helped Quinn out he wouldn't have to bring up his name in the whole thing. Quinn, although he knows Dexter killed Liddy accepts Dexter's help as a truce of sorts. Quinn didn't want to bring Dexter into it because he would lose Deb for sure. He also was really pissed with Liddy, (shown in the scene where Quinn tells him to stay the fuck away and grbas him by the neck) I think it was only time till Quinn lost it with Liddy. Dex also helped Quinn to keep Deb happy.
3. Deb&Dex&Lumen - Deb began building a hatred for the barrel killers throughout the season, and a feeling that the vigilantes were doing the right thing. She let them go because she knew what that girl had been through, and felt it was best to not have the vigilantes caught. Very plausible. @ Her not looking to see the perps, I think she was very on the fence about letting them go, so she wanted as little as possible to do with them. I think they didn't want to reveal Dexter to Deb to preserve the show as much as possible, if she had found out i think the end would be nearer.
4. Dex&Jordan - honestly people expected a "kung-foo" fight between them? Dexter has for years dispatched people swiftly and with expertise. He has never been in a lengthy fight in the entire series. @ Jordan not checking Dex for the knife. Really people? You think your going to check someone for weapons you just saw get in a serious accident, with his weapons in his hand? When you have a gun aswell?
5. Lumen, Emily & Dexter - If any of you have read the books you would better understand how lumen left. Dark Passengers (In the books) have been known to leave their occupants. For lumen, it leaving after she had got rid of those who caused it. This is perfectly plausible and i thought a good way to write her out. Having her killing with Dexter is perhaps not the best idea for seasons to come. With Emily being killed, perhaps that will be explained next season, but we all know they will find Jordan's prints & blood at the scene, (If Dexter doesn't clean it up)

ALSO i was very impressed with the acting of Jonny Lee Miller in the scene where Lumen was held captive. It strongly reminded me of the work of Heath ledger as the Joker. Watch from start to 2:00

The finale was like the rest of the season: not good. I only really enjoyed the first and the 9th episode. My biggest problem with the finale is Deb letting the "vigilantes" go without first confirming her theory. It was just a theory, she didn't know for sure and she just let them go. That made no sense whatsoever. The writers have also already given themselves again a way out with the kids. I thought this season would have much more to do with Rita, but after the first episode it was swept under the rug. This season changed my opinion of Quinn. I hated him before but I don't anymore after seeing Deb tear him a new one. I hoped he would find out everything about Dexter, not just killing Liddy. What happened to the cinematography of the previous seasons? The playing with the colors, the slow motion, the use of depth of field added so much to the story. Dexter also used to use all kinds of tools to kill people. Knives, meat cleavers, electric saws, a chainsaw but now he just stabs them once.
|
I think if I were deb, I would've "pretended" to leave, whereas really going to some sniper vantage point to see the two who come out of the camp area. Not because I want to secretly arrest them or something, but just to confirm my theory. And maybe to see their faces in case I recognize them somewhere.
I am excited for next season though. Everything seems better for Dexter now, but we all know something will get in his way again, lol.
|
I still remember how half way into this season i thought Fowler would end up being the season's main "villain" lol
About the finale I agree with most here that said this season sarted slow but finished in a crescendo last 3 eps especially, but well that seems to have become characteristic of the show... I hope they find ways to make the next season interesting from the start next time.
& now the infamous 'you heard it here first' section:
next season features:
-Quinn spying on dexter very precautionously and catching him on the act
-Deb incriminated by her fingerprints+Jordan's blood found by police (backtracing through dexter's county information call)
-Harisson killing squirrels (ok that one was so easy it doesn't count lol)/injuring the nanny
-nanny will stumble upon the blood samples behind the vent
discuss or post yours ^^
|
And I thought Dexter couldn't get any worse than season 3 :/
|
LoL dolpiff! you made me crack up with the prediction of Harrison killing squirrels :D
edit: good post below me Blackjack, hadn't thought of some of those things
|
sigh, such a bad ending to this season.

The most ridiculous thing about the whole Quinn story is how quickly La Guerta was able to spot blood on Quinn's shoes. Not even Quinn was able to spot it when he put his shoes on that morning.. How often do you actually look at someone's shoes? (Shawshank anyone?)
It's completely normal for Quinn to not make a big deal in front of everyone for Dexter killing Liddy. Not just for Deb, but also because he knows that Dexter was probably acting in self-defense so he has nothing to pin on Dexter and he would most likely lose his job for conspiring against Dexter. There's absolutely no reason for Quinn to tell everyone that Liddy tied up Dexter and stuffed him in a van and then Dexter broke free and killed him, which I'm sure Quinn is a good enough detective to figure out is what happened. That's not even abnormal behavior, all of us would try to kill a person that tazed us and stuffed us in a van. What IS abnormal behavior is that you don't report to the police that you were abducted, which tells Quinn that Dexter has bigger secrets to hide or that he was just afraid and thought he might be prosecuted so he ran away. I imagine it is probably the former so it might come up next season after Deb and Quinn inevitably break up. Especially if Deb breaks Quinn's heart then that will be interesting to see if he investigates Dexter out of spite.

I'm surprised by the general criticism of this season. Personally, I found this season to be very good, however the finale was a huge disappointment.
It just felt so harsh to write Lumen out like that. Poor Dexter, finally having found something that really could last. Then again, it reflects how Dexter is different, with his dark passanger being.. permanent.
|
Finale was good. It would have been better if it wasn't rushed (the killing of chase, Lumen's departure). I think the best part overall was when Dexter looked strait into the camera, breaking the fourth wall and giving viewers the chills.
|
i think this season is still okay. season 3 is still the worst. the finale is good. i don't know but i think they didn't put any cliff hanger in case some thing happens and season 6 will not push through. season 5 almost did not happen right because michael c. hall was diagnosed with cancer?
but i really think this season is still okay. i don't hate anything about it. i'm just enjoying the show!
about the book vs tv series. i read the four novels, they are great novels but i just can't compare it to the tv show. the characters in the series are entirely change, except for dexter. so it's not even comparable. but i love both!
|
This was either the weakest or second weakest season yet. IMO.
|
link
soo the two are separating..hope this doesn't mean the beginning of the end to the show =/
|
i didn't mind the finale. just the plot holes was a bit annoying. definitely one of the weaker seasons, but i'm still looking forward to season 6. so long to go =[
|
This season was okay, not that great. I didn't think Lumen was going to stick around long since she was played by Julia Stiles. A regular tv series doesnt really suit her IMO.
I was actually glad Dexter's wife was gotten rid of at the end of last season. She started to really annoy me and I was looking forward to see how Dexter's life would adapt this season.
I still hate Deb, despite her heroic decision in the finale. It's like every scene she's in she's struggling to hold back tears.
|
Jordan Chase was a cool character and I liked him. Then Lumen had to impulsively stab him while he was talking. Lumen's always ruining the fun.
|
I enjoyed the finale and the whole Lumen/Jordan Chase story arc. I was sad that she decided to leave though, she could have helped Dexter get rid of his dark passenger. However, I do agree with others on how bad the whole Quin/Liddy thing. It felt rushed, and ultimately pointless.
