not really, because most sports have breaks of play. starcraft does not have break in play.
i'm pretty sure in tennis you'll find that you can't serve unless the opposing player is ready/in position.

Random pauses are annoying and can throw people off their game. I am not one to unpause, but I do find it rude in that I can set aside some time to get my IRL stuff sorted for a session of ladder games, and my opponant doesn't have the foresight to do the same.
I thought I was the only one to do this. I do not get mad when someone pauses. As long as it's not over two minutes and they asked first. If they just paused with no communication, it's the worst bm you can get in my opinion.

Although in this case all you have to do is sit there and wait, no effort required on your part :D
Surely if you're playing, your time is not so valuable that you can't at least chill for a minute or two while they do what they gotta do.

Just quickly ask or explain why you need to pause, and people will likely wait. It doesn't take much, just "phone sec" or "doorbell, just a sec". If someone pauses and doesn't explain, I don't know if they're trolling or actually need to pause. If you expect me to wait, then I expect you to take two seconds and type in why you want me to wait. That seems pretty fair to me.

Obviously all metaphors have breaking points, that doesn't mean you can take it that far and claim you won the argument...but regardless you missed my point entirely.
My point is that in a one on one competition, if your opponent has an issue they need to sort out that will only take a few moments, it's bad manners to just ignore it completely. There is no reason not to wait 1 minute, unless you are hugely impatient. It's fucking courtesy...I could argue all I wanted that there's no reason to thank the guy serving you in a restaurant because it's his job, but despite all the rationalisations I could bring it'd still display a lack of courtesy.
Another example, in football if someone goes down injured and the referee doesn't blow the whistle because the other team has an advantage/are on a break, very often said team will kick the ball out of play if they think the guy might really be hurt. After it's sorted the team with the injured player will throw it in to their goalkeeper who will kick it to other end of the field. None of this is necessary, they're not obligated to do it, they could leave the guy rolling on the floor and break with an extra man.

fair enough, but the other thing is that you can visually assess the old lady or the quantity of groceries and time plan around it, which you can't transpose to the pause discussion.
to amend our metaphor:
an old lady wearing a balaclava approaches you and asks you to follow her around the corner to assist in picking up her spilled groceries. out of good faith, you want to help the old lady - but you likely didn't plan on stopping and thus it may well eat into the 60 minutes you had alotted to your evening gym session.
to reiterate, i'm not someone who unpauses. but i see the frustration, and if i ever wanted to pause i would totally understand if someone would refuse.

If I just spilled my beer, I'm not playing with that all over the front of me. If your time is as valuable as you claim go play some game where you don't have to worry about other people wasting it at all. Like Solitaire. I guess you've never dealt with troll pausers then? There are many times on ladder, where I'll be winning a game, and the opponent will pause without explanation, just to try to annoy me. I don't see anything that could be so urgent, you couldn't take the time to write "brb 1 min" or something like that, to let me know that you are in fact leaving your computer and are coming back, not just being juvenile. For me, I have to deal with my phone dcing me on about the 2nd ring. Sometimes I just don't have enough time to answer the phone before I get Dc'd. And troll pausers are much less common than troll unpausers. Sometimes I even have to deal with my keyboard failing because of an in game error, so I cannot tell people why I'm pausing. I just think people need to give the benefit of the doubt and imagine the possibilities before labeling "HE'S TROLLING".

Mainly I wont ever unpause but theres been a couple of times when whatever my opponent has been doing has taken more than 5mins with no further message to explain so Ive unpaused it

i just leave the game if something comes up...its rude to make someone wait for something that has nothing to do with them. if someone pauses on me i always wait though but sometimes i wish people would tell me how long they are going to be because i would just leave if its going to be 5 minutes or more. It is actually totally ok if someone upauses on you though. They bought the game and they have no reason not to if that is what they want to do.

And to anyone who types sec, you should really explain more. I've seen countless people who type "sec" and it's just as bad as not saying anything cause I don't know if you'll be back in 1 minute or 5 minutes.
It sounds like OP needs to pause too often during his games. I for one, have never had to pause during a ladder match. Like other people mentioned, ignore the phone call, if it's important, they'll repeatedly call. If you're expecting someone at the door then don't ladder, or make sure someone else can answer the door. People log on to have fun and play games, not to sit on a pause screen while you do other things.

I not saying you shizna but the original person I quoted (LoneWolf.Alpha) as he was doing it just to be a troll and mean spirited as you can tell by the context of his post. Also you can tell how long a pause is going to last cause any upstanding person asking for a pause will tell you how long of a pause they need.
So if we are to take into count the context that LoneWolf.Alpha was using for our metaphor and revised it
An old lady wearing a balaclava approaches you and asks you to follow her around the corner to assist in picking up her spilled groceries and says it will only take a few minutes. You tell the lady that is too bad so sad, but you have to get to the gym cause you only have an hour even though those few minutes will have a minuscule effect on your routine but you just dont want to help her.
Stuff like asking for a 25 min pause or not even asking for the pause in the first place but expecting it anyway is what your last two metaphors where alluding too and are not all right. But asking for 30 sec to 2 min pause in a polite way are not going to hurt anyone. You unpausing just to get an easy win is just not right.
To refresh what lone wolf said and what you where defending
i love it when somenoe pauses. i just say, sure. then unpause when they are gone, and when they come back, they are dead.
also, i ask if i can pause cause i gotta use the bathroom. then i unpause randomly and attack and hopefully catch them off gaurd.
How can you honestly say that is not a dick move

unpausing immediatly is stupid. i wait 10 seconds to be sure he's afk

Ya but then its obviously what is going on and that a break is justified The analogy should realy be like this:At a random poin in the first half of the match one of the players picks up the ball and says "hold on a second, i need to do something, and he goes to the dressing room to stay there for 5 minutes and then returns" Well: infact he doesnt even say annything, he just picks up the ball and leave to return 5 minutes later Now how weird would that be?
Courtesy on the internets is somewhat tricky since you have absolutely no idea whats happening on the other side of the line and people will take advantage of it is my experience Sry for beeing bit cynical but its reality on the internet Not saying this justifys beeing rude btw.

Ever since widespread of allin strategies started on GSL i have been hearing one sentence. " You do what you can to win, it is not unmannered if it works." People abused me, pylon rushed me, bunker, reaper banshee helion harrased me in attempt to win as easy as possible.
In game, you join ladder match against me i hate you for your ingame race and previous abuses instantly. U are my worst enemy, u fuel my hate. I will insta-unpause automatically.. u have some trouble IRL and need time ? Fine for me, u have surrender option right next to pause, use that one instead.
ONLY exception for this are tournament, clan or friend matches. But on the gray area u want to abuse me, destroy me, u are using everythink u can to win .. well quess what ? i will do the same.
And btw i know your manner "please wait sec.." is a disguise and u will turn into "i fucked your cheap mother" insulting kid right after i unpause. I am not the one pretending - I will snap-resume and even flame u for it - to get you out of comfort zone. [evil grin]

^ If you are serious with your post and thats how your mindset is when you ladder, I feel sorry for you and everyone who has to play you. -----
If I need pause I always write "need pause" and when my opponent gives me the go-ahead I pause and explain myself real quick. Never had any problems with this like people refusing pause or unpausing.

Yeah, pauses are annoying as hell, unless someone is dying or something crazy is happening a pause throws my game off. If the pause is going to take more than 30 seconds, just leave instead of wasting someones time. Also if someone pauses without an excuse, I will always auto unpause the game, I just hate going from peak APM down to 0 and trying to work my way back into the game.
If they do give a decent reason, then I give 2-3 min max, ask if they are there and then unpause. I just want to be efficient in my ladder time and not have a ton of interruptions mess with my playing.

I usually pause, if it's suited (like battle is finished or something) or do a fast pp before pausing, and ask if it's OK if I take 10sec-3min to (do whatever). If not, then I just all-in and hope for the best. If it's OK, I do whatever and come back and hopefully be able to continue my thought.
