Yes, but you need a permit. edit: It really depends on where you live, its a lot easier in the Mid-West while its almost impossible to get one in NYC if you're a regular everyday civilian and not a person of high status. The standard would be a CCW(Concealed Carry) permit or something, you dont have to have a gun license. Im not 100% sure but its something along those lines.

on the other hand your allowed to walk around with shotguns and shit without any permits. so maybe invest in a 12 gauge and walk around with that.. it would probably never even need used. im not sure how many muggers will target people walking around with 12 gauges but it cant be many..

Moments like that are pretty scary, but it is best not to dwell on them, you didn't lose anything you can't replace and they will get what's coming to them eventually.

I really don't know about carrying a gun to college. I think that just seems too extreme. There are alot of gangs near my college and carrying a gun or even using one could give me more trouble than i need. I don't even know how to shoot a gun and it'd be pretty awkward if i were pulled over for a speeding ticket or something minor and they found a gun in my car or backpack especially if it was on campus. I think even carrying firearms on campus is illegal itself...

Hope you recover well. Just learn some lessons from this and don't get caught in the same place to have the same thing happen to you again and all is well.

Honestly, I'm not too familiar with USA areas, but when I read "compton" I was not surprised at all that you were mugged around there. Carrying a weapon might be a solution, anyways from my point of view it seems definitely dangerous to walk in american cities without a weapon. About the legal/illegal thing... Does it really matter? afaik mugging people is illegal too and cops are basically incompetent / useless in these situations.

Anyways once at around 3 in the night i was going home and ran across a bigger group than usually, 8-9 of them and the walked up to me and told me to give them my wallet and phone. Actually laughed a bit at first since my phone was bloody ancient and me being a poor student i had like five dollars on me. Did not see the point in fighting but i talked to them telling them how bloody pointless it was, they were hostile but did not flat out attack me. Anyways, i took out my cards from the wallet (ID, VISA, some other cards) and gave them the wallet with my mighty fortune in change aswell as my phone. One of them told me to give them my cards aswell but i said something along the lines of "dont be an asshole, you got no use for my ID, and my first call when you leave will be to block my VISA card from further use, might aswell let me keep them" and others agreed and they left... All in all, pretty anti-climatic experience. Called the cops next day, but did not have much to report/say. And i very much doubt i would actively fight robbers, cash, phone and other stuff are not worth dying for. Besides, i got insurance...

Anyways I applaud to your courage, I would've dropped down and just given everything I had. Things like these just happen I guess. I've never been mugged in my life so I really can't give you any advice (sorry ) But there is one TL Staff member who beat the shit out of the people who tried to mug him. Hopefully he will read this thread and help you out what to do on those situations and etc (not saying you should go jackie chan whenever some wants your stuff) was there a thread for this epic story? i want to hear about how those muggers got beaten up

you tried to fought back 4 black guys ? you got some balls mate ! fortunately in Bratislava there are no black gangs well yea gypsies but they are usually on drugs so not big deal... btw i like this idea If you want to feel safer in a good way I would seriously say learn some Parkour! friend of mine is little bit nerdy type and he looks like Easy to take down guy but he is doing some kind of Russian self defense called Dragon (or something like that) its really helpful i think

Off topic: TL is surprising me more and more with the amount of absolute garbage replies. It was bad before, but this is terrible. Really, buy a gun and pull it out so he can attempt to scare 4 aggressive young men away? They'll either shoot back and/or attack out of panic or run away. Is a rough coinflip worth your life? Fucking idiots. And to the poster suggesting he invest in a 12 gauge to carry around and the one suggesting he learn to fight with needles... well I just picture a fatass basement dweller posting in his computer screen glare wearing shit stained underwear. Get some experience man, you don't know anything. To op: There's not much you could of done differently. You took it pretty well. It's a loss/loss situation and I believe you know you won't be a hero by somehow beating these 4 guys up in the end. Well done.

I talked it out with a few friends and i'm just going to buy a parking permit and park inside the school. I'm never going to carry my wallet to school and just carry 10 bucks cash and my license/school id just in case. Guys i didn't necessarily fight back full on. I just pushed them away and swung my leg at them to keep them away so i could make another escape. They surrounded me and ended up wrestling me and punching. They were extremely aggressive and had i swung at one of them i think their motive would have switched from simply "stealing money" to "beat the shit out of him then steal his money". My personal advice to any of you if you encounter the same thing i think the best choice would be to give them your wallet and walk away. I honestly wish i took that route realizing how close i was to a serious injury or even possibly death over stupid materialistic reasons. My stupid actions pretty much told the 4 muggers that i have alot of valuable things that i'm not willing to give up and that probably encouraged them to be as aggressive as they were with me. All in all i'm thankful for all the supportive replies. I certainly am starting to feel better although i'm having trouble sleeping but it feels good to know there people do care.

If it's any consolation, you handled the situation the best you could at the time and you got away safely which is the main thing. It was a 4 on 1, there wasn't really a whole lot you could do unfortunately. As for the people recommending that you get a gun, that really isn't the right way to go about it in my opinion. There's always the possibility that if you did have a gun, the attackers could always wrestle it off you, pull out a weapon of their own, etc. Glad to know you're feeling better, and remember to stay safe!
