i'm not sure i can pinpoint what exactly that i like. Maybe it's a little bit of everything and its overall simplicity. I have no previous builds of the game that i can compare this to expect for my shoddy memory of 1.0 open beta 2.5 years ago. The UI is gorgeous and will be able to scale in Phase-4 open beta, and the overall architecture and look of things is quite good. Can be a bit less bland at some areas of the game, but it serves its purpose. Here are a few gameplay tips in case you are going into this fresh: - Much to my groaning surprise, the game doesn't hold your hand with quests so much as all other MMOs of recent past, from sparkly bread crumbs of D&D:neverwinter to any of the generic online rpgs that highlight where and in which exact direction you're supposed to go. I was so used to it that it was hard not to rely on getting my hand held early on, leading me to become a bit lost with myself, unfortunately for me. I think it's a good thing, and it's not that hard to navigate the map and plan your route once you get the hang of it. - You start off with one 'job' and can eventually upgrade/specialize around level 30 i hear. So far i have only played gladiator, it is your bread and butter tank with enough damage to solo comfortably alone, especially since regen out of combat goes very fast to the point that you don't need to pot or rest. - Level 10 is when you first get a sort of map travel device. My friend calls it a taxi, and it's comparable somewhat since it's a chocobo service that helps you get from point A to point B as long as you've visited the areas you want to travel to. That same philosophy goes with aeph. crystal travel. They are the large crystals that you'd recognize from ff14 1.0 and can teleport you to any other crystal you have visited and interacted with before--thus--it's important that you visit such a crystal whenever you get a chance. It really just saves time when you know where you're going. - Aside from the sort of temp. mount you get in form of chocobo transport and temporary renting (at a constant rate, it moves about as fast as your sprint ability<--- please hotkey and use this ability whenever you're travelling), i hear that you get a permanent mount around level 20-25. Or you could benefit from CE preorders and stuff like that for a free mount. - The icon next to the level of a monster is their hostility. Redd = hostile, otherwise all i've seen is non-red which is pretty self explanatory. The small colored box in the corner of an equipment slot is the actual colour that the piece of equipment is dyed. - Eventually you will get to a point in the game/questline where it unlocks your hunting log, which is like a sort of achievement book and an extra way for you to gain moderate amounts of experience. what you do is hunt mobs with a bulls-eye icon over them and follow your log as to where you can find these mobs in order to complete sets and earn experience that way. You need to complete your log levels 10/10 to unlock the next tier of mobs that you can gain credit for hunting. Just have fun! and don't play gladiator unless you know what you're getting into >_<;;; I hate being full-tank for the majority of the game. rofl It's a tough and potentially cheeky class from whati've seen though. I can just gain aggro and run circles with boss mobs on my tail while everyone else is wailing and attack-moving the things that keep chasing me for minutes at a time.

I am also a thaumaturge. I was stuck on Duty, Honor, Country at lvl 14 which is pretty much impossible. I grinded to lvl 15 and did my class quest then did fate / grind til lvl 16. I had to use 2 potions and an antidote and i barely beat it at lvl 16. Its too bad cause this broken ass quest basically blocks you from getting any further in the game

Then grind to a higher level? Wouldn't be the first game that you had to grind a little and won't be the last.

Playing through the starting areas feels more like playing a random asian F2P MMO, than the next best thing and reference game on the market. But I've heard the later stages become better and better, so if that's the case, yay!

Moveset consists of fire spells that gives a "Astral Fire" buff that increases damage done by fire spells (40%?) but doubles the mana cost, also halves ice spells mana cost. For example, mana cost of fireball is 41 and it does 44 damage. If I cast it again it cost 82 mana but does 63 damage. I have 431 mana at lvl 18. Ice spells give "Umbral Ice" buff which regenerates mana very fast. 6-seconds? for the entire mana pool. They only do the same damage as an unbuffed fire spell though. You also get this spell called Transpose which switches your Astral Fire buff for an Umbral Ice buff and vice-versa. You also get this weak dot spell called thunder. Fire 2 and Ice 2 are aoe type spells that cost 25% more mana and does 67% of the fire I and ice I spells but hit multiple targets. You end up spamming fire spells until you run outta mana then hit transpose and use icespells to regen your mana and thunder. Once youre back at full, you hit transpose again to switch to fire. Mechanically, it is similar to the first part of Wrath of the Lich King Arcane Mage. Graphically it looks very good. On a technical level it probably looks the best out of all the mmos, at least the ones i've played (tera, guild wars 2, wow, age of conan, rift, aion, eve, neverwinter). It has a realistic look just like it did 3 years ago in the original beta, but better. Id say guild wars 2 still beats it on an aesthetic level though. Gameplay-wise its just another tab-target hotkey-based mmo. There are some aoes you can move out of, and you do see an enemy cast bar so you can dodge some spells, but, in general if an enemy is next to you, its gonna hit you, bar dodge/parry/block/ect. There isnt any iframe dodges like tera or large invul-dodges like guild wars 2 or neverwinter. Kiting is way worse than any of the mmos ive played, at least so far at lvl 18. I only have 1 instance cast -Scathe- and its weak. All the other spells have long cast times 2.5-3.0 seconds. Range of my spells is 25 yards. Canceling spells isnt always instantly responsive, sometimes its like 250ms ish off. Aoe grinding is out of the picture. The aoe spells are very weak and cost large amounts of mana. Its also very hard to kite mobs since they sometimes have a longer laggy melee attack that will hit you anyways even if you are 5 yards away. Think diablo 3. Combat-wise i'd say the "fun level" is: Tera > > Guild wars 2~ neverwinter > ffxiv. This is probably because I dont have a real escape spell even at lvl 18, no blink or pushback spells. Only a sleep spell on a 2.5 sec cast for 30 seconds, but it has DR on pve mobs lol (1/2 duration each successive hit - 30 sec > 15 > 7 > immune for like 8 seconds?. UI is pretty good. Every element is adjustable position wise. You also get a smaller window that shows every target that has you on their aggro table. Ive done the first 2, 4-man instances. They are easy if you have a healer/tank, but keep in mind that im almost lvl 19 so im probably ahead of 95% of the playerbase level-wise. If you dont have one or the other then its still possible but harder. Nothing special dungeon-wise. I can expand more if needed, just ask.

You have to go to the town that has the class guild you want and get the lvl 1 class weapon for that class.

I always assumed it was because the servers were located in Japan and connecting to them from America would of course leave you with a lot of latency to account for. I'm not sure if it's the same with ff14. I wouldn't be surprised.

I did that as a lancer for archer but I can't equip the bow? O.o I can change to conjurer fine but it won't let me equip the bow for archers. I haven't tried any other classes yet. Edit: I was able to equip a bow from conjurer. Oh well at least it works.
