Depends on what you're into. When I was still active playing 3.5 I would frequent the Optimization forums that were basically an Art of combining perhaps dozens of obscure classes and ability interactions with plenty of math and theory craft to make some pretty crazy builds. Most of them were way too ridiculous to comfortably go through a standard adventure without the DM upping the ante but some of the thought exercises were definitely on a level or above roleplaying .
See Pun-Pun (perhaps the most far out there twink that was largely legit).

By JP hearing that situation IRL he was sort of forced into NOT attacking the person who entered Abigail's room because he didn't want his character's decision to be based on what he knew IRL. If JP was cut off from the audio until his character woke up so the first thing he sees is someone sneaking into Abigail's room, his character might have actually just attacked the intruder instead of letting them go because it is part of his character's nature.
This would be lovely. But I don't think it's plausible. The stream is coming from JP's computer, so he'd have to get audio of whoever is talking to pipe to you guys.
Also, i'd be a pain in the ass to keep muting people all the time. I've tried such things before, and while it starts out fun, it ends up being really annoying because you end up using it all the time, and people sit there with nothing to do, and not even an entertaining story.
Lastly, it'd be better if you asked questions over at the reddit Q&A page.
It's also a lot of effort for not a lot of gain, and it tends to just be not really much fun. Because now instead of one playing group in which you have fun, you suddenly have to deal with who hears what all the time, which tends to lead to tedious management, and is basically only annoying for little real gain.

Yeah, this is the stuff that I really wanted to avoid. There's a certain joy out of optimizing characters - taking this feat with this weapon so you can do this bizarre combination of attacks to pull off XYZ. It's fun as a player when you're optimizing and when you level up, but the rest of the time I find creates a "When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" trend. People tend to play RolePlay light, and combat heavy. That's a totally legit way to play, but I wanted a more Role Play heavy campaign.

When I used to do RPG with friends at my house I would send people to another room when a hero was isolated from the rest, muting people doesn't seem that hard :D. I feel like you could "roleplay" more (giving up on the "i will say", "can i do this or this?" etc would help with the immersion of both the players and the spectator), however this show is bringing back quite a lot of good memories, thanks for that .
I completly agree with you concerning the balance between roleplay/gameplay, what makes tabletops RPG fun is roleplaying and the freedom that you have. When I started to run campaigns with friends we were too worried about following the rules stricly, as well as following the story and focusing on fighting (my first campaign was the freeport trilogy if anyone heard of it, really had an amazing time with it). Then with experience I started to take more initiative, and we focused more on roleplay and it made for amazing memories. I feel like if you want to focus on the gameplay too much and optimisation, you're better off playing a PC rpg, the strenght of tabeltops is the unlimited freedom that you get to roleplay.

I agree, "I say xyz" needs to go, though there has been a lot less of that in the more recent episodes It was incredibly prevelant in the first few. If you want to say something, just say it. It is usually pretty easy to distinguish what is In Character and what is not. However, "can i do xyz" is pretty much needed in most RPGs, because it is important to sync up what is going on in the players head with the dms head. So stuff like "is there something i can throw at them" is needed unless you are playing a cinematographic system that gives more control over that kind of stuff to the players.
I don't mind so much the "I say ABC". In a perfect game, they wouldn't but, it doesn't really detract that much IMO. These guys are all really new to this, so give them some time. I've been pretty impressed with Gen/Abigail so far. I think she's nailing her character spot on and giving it a lot of personality - not that the others aren't, just that she's at the head of the pack.
UGH week 2 part 4 cuts off at such a good part! I wanna know what happens! I really wish there was just a whole vod available I could watch rather than having to wait for each piece
OMG I wanna Hear how Geoff single handedly roflstomped this Ogre into the ground. Perfect rolls, with the strength cast on him... he is going to cleave this beast in half

I will tease you: cutting in halves is a VEEERY mild description ;-) Together with the Orb smashing, it may be the second best moment in the series :D (and I think they both together ruined most of Neals work)
when did they smash the orb? i listened to them while playing df so i think i missed that :S i want to see the face of neal at that part after reading his message on reddit
