GSL established a precedent with the pay per view for HQ live and for VODS. This was controvercial at first and maybe it still is. The thing is though, GSL has a frekin TV company behind them. True professionals, the best casters in the world, the best players in the world, a every day lan/ live event. Even so, there have been problems here and there particularly in the first seasons. Is it free in Korea by any chance?
Now, in the west, the same model is being copied. Unfortunately, amateurs are doing this things (compared to professional TV people), the end product, even for a company with somewhat experience like MLG, the resulting product is ... very bad. Completely untested venues, line NASL, that had a very ugly start (the show match) start of with the same "demands" from their costumers as a very professional/ blizzard backed GSL.
If eSports is to really grow in the west, the way we all want, i think things have to change. Mentality wise. 1) Only the "hard core" will even consider buying a ticket. When the "market" is so "young", with, presumably, vast potential to expand, this is a huge, huge problem. (hei ""friend nr 1, casual SC2 player", there was this super cool game last night in the NASL,blah blah. You have to buy a season ticket to see it though." Friend: "yeah right, no way" 2) The "market" of eSports is made of people between 12-30yo. By the nature of it, they simply do not have the money to spend on all this tournaments, production value aside. However, this is exactly the "market" for everything computer related (accessories, graphics cards, etc) soft drinks/ beer etc.
In conclusion, the way to grow eSports in the west, IMHO, is by attracting sponsors and get rid of "pay per view" . Maybe in a few years when the market will be saturated, PPV will have a case. As it stands, i think it is damaging eSports. its free in korea . We are basically paying for the English stream ! Tastosis stated many times that all the money they get from the premium service goes into the improvement of stream :o
btw I totally agree with your point I feel the same

kinda sucks for the nasl people - the timing couldnt have been worse. with mlg people are reminded of just how badly a stream can fail, and feel like a rip off. i will probably buy the ticket eventually as i really dont want to see such an event fail, and i like the general idea of the nasl. that being said i dont really want to support the type of invite system they have in place, not to mention a bunch of other problems with this arrangement. there is no guarantee that people wont cheat (with hacks, im aware that they wont be able to ghost the stream) for example.
|
Depends on if I have time to watch games live or not. If not, I may buy a ticket... So still undecided
|
To those saying that we should support it because it's eSports, please stop being ridiculous. It'd be the equivalent of having a friend who is a terrible singer, but praising them just because they are trying to realize their dream of becoming a singer.
Reinforcing NASL simply "because it's eSports" does not give incentive to improve anything or supply that which is in demand. As with any venture, you live and die with your market. If they become unwilling to change to fluctuations in their audience and market, they don't deserve anything.
Wait for the product to arrive, and this discussion will make more sense.

Wow...lol at how all the guys saying they won't pay will be the same guys complaining about the state of esports. You're damn right I'll pay $20 for a 3 month season. I wouldn't miss this for the world.
lol at the people throwing their money out of their window when they are not even sure what they will get for it or if it will be worth the price (in comparison to other leagues). And please can we stop with the whole 'support e-sports' crap? People are acting like anyone who reads this forum _has_ to give their money to the NASL. I am supporting e-sports, because I buy the GSL subscription, because the GSL has shown good production value, good casting and so on. What has NASL shown? The showmatch and a rather (imo) disappointing player list. Add into the mix that the games aren't live and some other stuff people have been mentioning in this thread.
When I feel like the NASL does an overall better job than the GSL (which personally I don't see happening in the near future) I will consider 'switching' leagues. And it sure as hell isn't my job to sponsor NASL along the way to become a better league (you know... that's what sponsors are for). I am a customer and as a customer I want the best product I can get for the cheapest price possible.

If i can see all the content in VODS a few hours after it been sent live i gladly pay the 25 dollars, if i only get higher quality Live stream i wont pay even if there is no free low quality stream.
|
thats the thing it may really be worth it, content wise. But really as much as I want to support e-sports, i can't justify to my parents 25$ on my credit, theyll just laugh. Had a hard time convincing them to do 10 for GSL.
|
As always, if someone is not free on the internet, people goes "why is it not free of charge?!" Oh please people, are you guys just glancing over the fact there is free streaming EVERY WEEKNIGHT?
|
Paid for it. Rarely do I have time to watch a ton of games, and even if I don't get to watch everything I have on vods, I'm willing to contribute to the cause here. 20$ for 3 months of SC with some of the best names in the world? Sure, why not.
I'm just catching up with the World Vs Korean Team battle today, and maybe a few games of either MLG Dallas, or the World Vs Korea tourney itself. I've paid for every GOMtv season since 3 (After staying up to watch as much as I could of season 2 for free and ending up having almost no energy at work.) and I've had no complaints, where as paying for IEM was terrible, still I didn't mind so much.
You can justify this by not going out for dinner one night and cooking for yourself, by not going out to a bar one night, by not buying junk food, ect. I'd rather pump a bit of money into trying to make SC2 bigger than have a snickers and a fast food meal. If it falls on it's face, then I just don't buy season 2.

Is there any way to buy a pass for a friend short of you giving him your CC info, or him giving you his un/pw?

Just Paid for it and subscribed
And just to note...my god, what cheap buggers we have on TL...20 bucks? you honestly don't have 20 bucks for the guys putting hundreds of thousands of dollars into AT MINIMUM 3 seasons of NASL.TV? Wtf's the matter with you? do you have any idea how much time the average TL'er spends with starcraft in a single day? well neither do i, but if i take myself as an example it's a whole fuck of a lot of time a week, you're getting what you pay for

what everyone is trying to say, is that if everyone's like, "YEA WE ALL WANT AWESOME THINGS FOR FREE" it's going to be very difficult for the esports to take off.
Eventually, we, as spectators, are going to have to put SOME money into the system if we want it to become anything. We want all of this content, but we don't want to pay for it. Since we don't want to pay for it, it has to be supported by commercials and ads, which frustrates everyone.
So we don't want commercials, but we don't want to pay for it. The reason GOM can be free, is because they're sponsered hugely by large corporations (sony erikson, intel, etc).
We can't just expect them to always grab infinite money and be able to give us everything for free. We SHOULDN'T expect them to. we, as spectators, need to stand up from time to time and show that we ACTUALLY support esports in NA.
The reason all these things are free in korea? They make money. esports in NA? doesn't make nearly as much. When we can support an esports channel on TV, THEN we can start expecting things like cheaper / free subscriptions (WE CAN EVEN ALREADY WATCH THIS FOR FREE), but until then, we need to show the marketplace that YES, we DO want esports in in NA.
If every time something like this tries to start up, we vomit all over the ground and cry that the world is ending, because they want 20 dollars for three months of programing (i can understand if your money is tight, but think about it. it's 20 dollars. 20 dollars is NOT MUCH. If you literally have nothing, then i don't know if spending all your time playing sc is for you. Think of it this way: the next two times you are thinking about going out to dinner, go to the grocery store. buy a box of noodles instead. Eat that. You've just saved yourself 20 dollars. Congrats. But that's more your own personal issue than anything else) then esports in NA will never take off. you'll have to get used to watching GOM live at 3 in the morning (in ehhh quality), or you'll have to be content with paying for that material.
tl; dr: if you aren't going to buy a ticket, please reconsider, because showing support for things like this is HOW we get things like GOM HD Quality for free.

*bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch*
just fucking pay the money, stfu, and admit you'll love it.
If you like watching SC2, $20 is nothing for so much action. If you don't like watching SC2, you probly wouldn't buy it if it was $10.
I'm still undecided, mainly because I'm not a die-hard SC2 fan, but I still think this should be good value for money.
|
I will watch the first season on the free stream and judge for that. I NEVER spend money when i don't know what i am in for.
|
well since we don't know ANYTHING about the schedule, when it will start, how many games are played a day, etc. How can you expect us to want to purchase this?
Zero commercials is great and all, but if there is only one game played a day I don't know...
If you want people to buy something is expensive then you need to give us information about what we are actually paying for, not how nice it will look.
For instance, I'm not going to pay if the quality of the broadcast is anything similar to the Clash of Titans show match, that was kind of painful to watch...
|
I don't really understand why this thread has gone into people arguing why other people should or shouldn't spend their money on this. Just let people decide for themselves, not your money
Personally I bought the ticket despite being a poor student because as many have said, $20 is not a lot to ask for when there's 3 months of quality entertainment in it for me. Probably gonna miss most of the live broadcasts anyway so it's nice to have the VODs available so I can see the matches I really want to.
|
Of course I would pay 20 or 25$ for 3 months of access. That's a pretty insane deal IMO.
|
Gonna watch for free for a week or so, if it is good production then i will pay for it. Im just glad i wont have to struggle with the stupid GOMplayer that never wants to work.
