There's a palpable rage in Murkowski's words when I read her interview where she weighs on Trump.
I think he should leave. He said he’s not going to show up. He’s not going to appear at the inauguration. He hasn’t been focused on what is going on with COVID. He’s either been golfing or he’s been inside the Oval Office fuming and throwing every single person who has been loyal and faithful to him under the bus, starting with the vice president. He doesn’t want to stay there. He only wants to stay there for the title. He only wants to stay there for his ego. He needs to get out. He needs to do the good thing, but I don’t think he’s capable of doing a good thing.
She also added that her leaving the GOP if it persists as the party of Trump isn't off the table. Frankly, I'd chalk her up as a likely conviction vote for impeachment right now. Alaska has a strong independent streak and she's survived in Alaska's wonky electoral system, including a write-in campaign, so she's safe electorally. Not impossible for her to become an independent senator.

Still a very steep, arduous uphill climb to reach the 67 vote threshold, but for now I can see Romney, Sasse and Murkowski on it, with probably Collins joining in. My indicator is if some more conservative senator like Graham relents on his opposition to impeachment and says he'll vote for it, or McConnell gives the signal, then Trump's toast.
But in the midst of all what happened a few days ago, I'm glad to read about civil servants like Rep. Andy Kim who cleaned up the debris and trash in the Rotunda out of respect and adoration, not a photo op.

Even if its short lived, Murkowski is poised to wield considerable political power and if she is truthfully going to try and repent for or on behalf of Republicans, she could swing in on votes like the bigger stimulus checks. Manchin is only as influential as his Republican counterparts are content to vote the party line.

Where was she when it mattered?

Voting the party line, of course, but even proven cowards can be brave once in a blue moon

I suppose she's here now. Better blame them later after they finally repudiate him.

I guess it hugely depends on the public mood and what information filters out to it over the next few days.
My intuition is that if the fear of a backlash from this relatively new and capricious cult of Trump diehards, a lot of the GOP would happily throw him to the sharks. Be it from ideological convictions or interpersonal differences, I mean do we really think there aren’t quite a few Republicans in the legislature who fantasise about Caesaring the Donald?
I could be way off but I think it’s quite telling that the folks who have some leeway, Murkowski way up in atypical Alaska, Romney in an incredibly safe seat and thus insulated from that blowback have been the critical ones.
I assume they’re the canaries in the coal mine as per gauging what at least a decent chunk of Republican legislators actually feel but are hamstrung for reasons of self-preservation in actually vocalising

yes here's the blogpost.
https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/company/2020/suspension.html
After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.
// oh sorry twitter somehow does not show up for me on the site...
and yeah crazy... just think about the loss of the most competent shitposter on the planet. his multi- multi million dollar megaphone is gone.

First. Especially Western Germany is famous for reintegrating Nazis into society and turning a blind eye to them wherever possible. The head of the party, where they got them, were punished, but the rest was in very high numbers just accepted back into society. The Russians did a much better job at keeping old functionaries and war criminals out of society. Western germany, not so much.
Second. Western Germany kept those people hidden by simply ignoring them. They remained in the society, they never mentioned what they did before and the fewest people bothered with more. People were educated in the rise of the third reich in the atrocities of the third reich but when it came to asking how the surviving men reintegrated into society, that education became a lot less focused. So, new generations just accepted that what their grandparents or parents collectively did was very wrong and can never happen again, but they also accepted that noone is actually personally responsible, especially not dear grandpa or the old strange man across the street.
Third. It is not allowed in germany to dispute the fact that the holocaust happened or to spread hate against people defined by religion, sexual orientation or descend. If someone does, it's jail time.
All three effects together mean, literal Nazis stayed in Germany and kept recruiting people to their ideology. They kept to themrselves and society for very long turned a blind eye unless they would public scream their hatred out into the world. And now they come out in droves, because they feel like they have regrown enough and are bold.
The point i am making is, jailing some people means nothing. Forbidding some intelectual property, like, lies about the outcome of an election, means nothing. You need to shame people AND always keep discussing the events as something that will happen again. Only then you have a chance to grow out of a lost generation. I guess the question is whether you consider either the Western or the Eastern German response a success? And was there reasonable alternatives available that could have lead to a better outcome? Very much what ifs but we don't really have much more to go by. Also am I wrong to think that significant portions of the far right support come from the former DDR rather than the West? One big difference with the Nazi trials and the current events is that in the Capitol invasion it's much easier to prosecute the folk on the ground, there is ample evidence and they've committed quite obvious crimes. I don't think there would've been much justice in prosecuting Germans for being part of the party or armed forces etc. The high ups in Nuremberg and later folk connected to camps have been charged with genocide and crimes against humanity -level stuff if I'm not mistaken. My gut feeling is that those were much easier to get through courts than charges such as 'inciting a rebellion' will be against Trump and co. In contrast to Brötchenholder I would indeed blame the gdr for ignoring right wing youth for too long. It was dangerous being a foreigner even during the 70s and 80s in parts of the country. Much more dangerous than now. Don't forget, the GDR was a dictatorship, and for some reason they actually ignored Nazis. And the best reason I've heard as of yet is that they simply could not exist in a communist country, avoiding to the party line. That weren't allowed to exist but that also meant nobody did anything against the young and misguided Nazi skins.
That's what i heard as well. Especially in the last years of the GDR, Neonazis established in the East again and were basically ignored because the SED had eradicated all roots of it in the 50s and so there could not be any in the GDR. Still, initially, the Russians did a lot more thorough job at finding not only the 50 ringleaders and put them on trial, but also smaller war criminals and functionaries. And while it was impossible for them to get rid of everyone with a brown history, the west basically took every person from the Nazi administration that was not directly attributed to the Holocaust and kept them in the new state. Take the judges, basically every jusge living through the Third Reich and still young enough to serve continued to serve in the jurisiction of the west, even those that studies after 1933, so those that were completely indoctrinated by the NSDAP. Basically every civil servant of the Nazis became one in the West. It was the next generation that was educated to always remember.

These social media companies must be some of the dumbest, most bubbled people in existence. This is an exercise in cultural power that will only make things worse. At best the only reason they did this is because they really, really wanted to. At worst...

Parler deleted posts from pro Trump lawyer Lin Wood after he called for the execution of Pence.
Apple had also told Parler they have 24 hours to improve moderation or be removed from the App Store.
Johnathon Swan of Axios said on MSNBC that the cabinet has enacted a de facto 25th amendment. They are ignoring his orders and avoiding the west wing.

Twitter are acting out of self preservation. They know they’ve been complicit thus far and they’re trying to draw a line under it.

Forget his whole account, the two tweets they cited were not instigating anything. This is a lame ass excuse and it's obvious. Seeing if they can get away with it.
And like I said, it's incredibly short-sighted. Good work all around.

Reputation laundering aside, deplatforming works and it works especially well when the platforms at issue are singularly unique in their reach and impact. You conservatives can't whine whenever anyone brings up turning things like the internet into a public utility and then turn around and cry like babies when massive tech giants like Facebook and Twitter reach the end of their productive relationship with an autocratic fool.
The idea that Trumpism is going to flourish or benefit from being relegated to places like parler is nonsense, Trump is nothing without his tweets.

For those tweets? Nothing. I'm not even going to touch post presidency or other tweets as president, these tweets are obviously an excuse.
