I really laughed hard at the Led Zeppelin comparison! As if the world ended in 1980 and there was no music ever since!
Metallicas skill and if they were better in the past (they were! *duck*) aside, yeah they were probably chosen because they are well known. I personally would like to have seen Machinae Supremacy! If there is a metal band that is connected to video games, it would be them! But they would have to be brought to the US...
Still I hope this concert is on the livestream! Would like to see some gamers bang their heads
I think the concert would be part of the virtual ticket. No Metallica freebies for the fans!

1st: Your damn Led Zeppelin is a f---ing rock band. Yes. Metal is considered part of rock genre and some even consider it a sub genre of rock, which would be a different story from what I'm talking here. But a big NO for anyone to even start to compare. You trying to compare banana and cucumber? Originated from 70-80s being just thrash metal, to today we see vast amount of sub genres in metal music. Metal's no longer a branch on this tree called rock. It has its own root, stem and branches. Comparing it to rock is a completely invalid and irrelevant comparison.
2nd: I don't know how many years you've been listening to metal(or how many torrents you seeded?) that you even dare to say metal may or may not come close to 10% of anything. I've been a metal fan and musician since 05' and I'm not even confident to say I've listened to all of them. Not to forgot, there are always better composed but poorly produced stuff in underground community. So "few metal bands"? Lol. You just rendered your opinion pretty weak and shaky since you proved that your claim is never neutral and even probably false. Also. You can't appreciate metal, it's your own problem. Never really a fact that you can just jump out and spit out, or force anyone else to agree. However since you did come out here and shout loud, I would be here to attack it all I want all day long. Even non-metal fans/metal haters could still easily agree there are reasons for this type of music to exist since it survived till today going through the times of punk(unless they've got no logical mind with them at all to think) Need not for me to even start to write a billion words essay to educate you the better parts of metal. Coz it ain't a neutral opinion for everyone to appreciate anway, and which is just what you have just done. But still, everyone can see that metal exist till today. Bands like Metallica, slayer which people here grew up listening to are in their 50s and still rocking on. Opposite to what you said. Where something not nearly as 10% as good as something else should be eliminated and become history long ago. What, you mean you don't believe how humans are rational behaving in this?
And till date there are all sorts of metal bands catering to different groups of people. Kids have their metalcores and breakdowns, veterans still have their traditional names(Cannible corpse just released a kick ass new album, soon obituray, though I can't really enjoy it.). Seasoned fans can have all they want, melodic death, death core, technical death. Can't get the point of enjoying extreme genres? Thrash bands are still around(exodus, testament) that you could simply keep banging head non-stop and break you neck. And they do still throw in some clean, slow sounding pieces among all the madness for their fans who wanted that(A trend formally started by metallica with the song fade to black). prefer a bit different voicing and stuff? go get some jent/progressive/math metal. Last I heard, periphery, meshuggah still going strong. And 7/8 strings are becoming the new trend anyway. Ever since I started posting my cover songs on youtube/twitter, there can always be some wild metalbands/artists in a random country just jump out and follow me. And yet here you are, after all this. claiming few metal bands you listened are 10% as good as a f---ing rock band. Hello Dude? Did you really listen to metal?
Back to this topic though
Probably blizzard just thought metallica is the symbol for metal fan and a safer choice for people who are completely new to metal. Which is the sad part. Throughout Metallica's discography there is almost no connection to what Blizzard's been always doing. I'd see some melodic death/black/epic power/gothic/viking metal bands that has quite a number of connections to their fantasy contents of their products. But unfortunately those are even lesser "mainstream" for people to appreciate. For the FPS community though, I guess power metal isn't something so new. #nightwish.
oh hell, almost forgot this. probably metal isn't so new to people playing blizzard games......think about the OST for Zerg.
Lol I love it when someone on the internet creates an account on some obscure forum just to reply to something they clearly perceive to be incorrect and of immense importance.
I am not trying to be belittle you Jupiter039, nor am I arguing against your points, I just find people's behaviours interesting and peculiar, especially on the internet.
Moving along...
Nah not really. I've been lurking TL for as long as I can remember since 2009. I've periodically stopped updating it a few times between the years. But've been checking it few times daily since last year. So I always know I'll eventually need an acc one day. Having a public holiday today so I was having some morning coffee time for browsing and typing. But true to a certain extent is that I don't like to join too many conversation/interaction nor do I have the time ,once going back to work again.
Its cool you've been around longer, I lurked for a long period before deciding to become an avid poster.
Actually I really enjoy posting here, because it gives me a chance to sharpen my writing skills.
Yeah you have to pick your topics that you feel need heavy defending, and I can accept that. Too me though, this seems rather trivial because I don't like metal, but I enjoy some rock.
Well whatever your choice, stick around and post more. Its fun interacting with other TL members.

Haha, I did the same thing, but I was torn. In hindsight, I probably should have gone to the concert.
Metallica is one of the big four of thrash metal bands, so it's understandable that Blizzard chose them due to their popularity. I feel like some symphonic metal bands would have fit the game's theme better, but most of the really great ones are European.
I am not that much into metal but I do know the big names and have listened to some of their stuff. Personally Black Album was my favorite Metallica album. Maybe I need to be tied on a chair like some guy above said, but that's how it is for me. You all need to understand that playing "real" metal at some event like Blizzcon is likely to do more harm than good. Ever watch say, a Lamb of God's, or even Metallica themselves' concert? Very likely that the non-metal, regular nerds will get scared the hell off, while the metalhead gamers go nuts and start headbanging, crying and smashing shit. Metallica was a safer choice compared to the other 3 in the Big 4; their music is the most "noob-friendly" for lack of better words. And most important they still do decently live (arguably).
Cool fact: Metallica set a world record by being the first band to play in all 7 continents in the same year! Yes, that includes Antarctica. I really hope we can somehow hear them from the SC2 Arena!

Led Zeppelin is a heavy metal band and, imo, far and away the best of the big 3 that created the genre. the Beatles did some pretty cool experimenting in this area from 68 to 70 but their contribution was tiny. it was, however, an admission that metal "has arrived".
an objective measure of Zeppelin's quality ( and anything of quality ) is their sales totals 20+ years after the content was published.
i want to like the heavy metal genre, i really do. its just that once you've listened to led zeppelin 95% of the popularly published metal bands sound more like spinal tap than a musical band.
i like iron maiden , but mainly because their base player can think on his feet and is extremely creative holding their stuff together... and they are 20+ years past their prime.
i'd rather not derail the thread into whether or not Zeppelin is a heavy metal band or not. if you'd like to continue this debate we can do so in the heavy metal thread or elsewhere.
my estimation that Zeppelin is 10X better than almost every other heavy metal band that has ever existed is purely subjective. however, objectively speaking their long term success proves they made top notch music. i'm part of their cult-like following. just as starcraft has a cult like following.
what can i say... i get into things that have cult-like followings.. like led zeppelin, starcraft, and ayn rand. ( and EA NHL 94)
thank you for your lengthy, thoughtful , and, unfortunately sometimes condescending reply.
i'm just tickled fucking pink that Metallica will be at Blizzcon and i let my enthusiasm spill over into too much subjectivity.

Maybe this will cause people to buy their virtual tickets, but that sort of goes against the point of a live concert...
Besides, its not like they will perform a dozen songs of their greatest hits; have two or three other bands to open; and close out the entire night. They will probably perform 3-4 songs; collect a paycheck; and call it a night.
Does Metallica even know the games Blizzard has developed?
I think Blink 182 gave a full concert last time so there's not reason to think they won't play 1.5 hours at least. I think it's more about Blizzard staff knowing Metallica then the other way around. They're just like, which awesome band can we get for our little party.
Also for the haters,I watched them just a few months ago during this show, tell me how you think is a bad performance?

While I support, that we don't derail this thread, I can't hold myself and have to ask: Which is this third band you are talking about? If I think about reaaaaly early metal bands (that are basically (hard) rock bands) that have influenced this music genre, Led Zeppelin as well as Beatles are maybe on this list as "honorary mentioned", but not very far up! So who is this mysterious third?

Right, and Hanna Montana is an opera singer.
I think inviting Metallica fits with the general theme of WoD, which is reaching out to veterans, which tend to be people who know the band very well, even if they might not be fans. Plus it's a big name, so it also creates plenty of publicity in the media.

here is the standard, general, middle of the road summary of the origins of heavy metal.
"The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath attracted large audiences, though they were often derided by critics, a status common throughout the history of the genre. "
That would be good to hear indeed, if they had released anything at least decent after Justice, which they didn't, and if they hadn't deteriorated as a live band either, which they did. Nowadays, I'd say it's a drawback rather than a plus to have them perform at anything. They've been dead for decades now, time to accept it and move on.
Besides, it's Blizzcon, and considering the typical audience for such things, I'm sure that something a bit more "contemporary" would've been a better fit.
