I watched them live at the Roskilde festival 2013 - best concert for a long time!
They played all their best hits, and the crowd was xstatic!

here is the standard, general, middle of the road summary of the origins of heavy metal.

"The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath attracted large audiences, though they were often derided by critics, a status common throughout the history of the genre. "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music

in 1967 Heavy Metal did not exist.
by 1972 it was a vibrant genre of rock.
the reason: Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Sabbath.

Zeppelin always makes for an interesting discussion.. let's discuss it in a better location.

If i recall correctly heavy metal is just fast paced music in blues scales ? Something like that ?

The only metal band that would get me to Blizzcon is Iron Maiden... Metallica doesn't even come close.

EA is holding a big community event for Command & Conquer on November 7-10 to compete against Blizzcon. Its sold out with 70,000 seats sold in the epicentre of C&C fandom Berlin, Germany. The concert at the end features U2, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are re-uniting with John Bonham's son on drums and Julian Lennon playing for his father John.

Kane will be there with 1,000 Nod Brothers in Cosplay.

Clearly, its a lot more fun to be a C&C fan instead of a Starcraft fan.

Blizzard sucks my balls.

Since streamers tend to play electronic/wubwubwub most of the times, I really like the idea of having freaking Metallica at Blizzcon.

Led Zeppelin is a heavy metal band and, imo, far and away the best of the big 3 that created the genre.

an objective measure of Zeppelin's quality ( and anything of quality ) is their sales totals 20+ years after the content was published.

i want to like the heavy metal genre, i really do. its just that once you've listened to led zeppelin 95% of the popularly published metal bands sound more like spinal tap than a musical band.

i like iron maiden , but mainly because their base player can think on his feet and is extremely creative holding their stuff together... and they are 20+ years past their prime.

i'd rather not derail the thread into whether or not Zeppelin is a heavy metal band or not.
if you'd like to continue this debate we can do so in the heavy metal thread or elsewhere.

my estimation that Zeppelin is 10X better than almost every other heavy metal band that has ever existed is purely subjective. however, objectively speaking their long term success proves they made top notch music. i'm part of their cult-like following. just as starcraft has a cult like following.

what can i say... i get into things that have cult-like followings.. like led zeppelin, starcraft, and ayn rand. ( and EA NHL 94)

thank you for your lengthy, thoughtful , and, unfortunately sometimes condescending reply.

i'm just tickled fucking pink that Metallica will be at Blizzcon and i let my enthusiasm spill over into too much subjectivity.

No thank you bro. Once you made it open your cult belief I realized any of my further actions on this are just going to waste time.
I am just going to reply this to you and be done with it. I just like spinal tapes. I like my arsis, my suffocation, my whateva you call it. Whatever you told me you liked, those just sounds like holiday blues and pop to me belongs to people listening them lying on rocking chairs enjoy their retirements and waiting for cancer. I really can't like them too coz I just drop sleep. But the differences here is clear as what I describbed. I still appreciate their efforts. I wouldn't go out and openly boast my favourite bands are thousand times better than anyone coz once it becomes a job for a living no one isn't going to not to give their A game. Musicians, as I know nowadays are living under pretty much the same or worse pressure level. They got to travel the world for like a year on the road, rocking every place like the madness last night didn't exist. End of the day, still gotta squeeze time in the tour to plan for and write new release materials. All this to pay their bills for all expenses on time. Never as many thought as easy. So I do respect them being capable. Which is exactly why I am not going to say some bands are 10X better than any other coz its all sweat and blood no matter how simple and sleep inducing the materials came out to be.

Another reason I would try not to have further discussion with you is that I don give a damn about commercial success. You can write rubbish and still earn money with your label together. Easy. find most the successul band in this territory, copy their stuff, twist it as your wish to make it your own, assemble all and record, then let the studio and label handle the rest. And you got a decent album, simple as that! Many probably have experienced these moments while enjoying their music collections :" the parts just now sounded familiar!", regardles of whatever genre. Now I am not saying your favourite bands are doing this or that. I am just saying, commercial success of selling how many albums to me is useless stats now. I don't listen to a band because they are best selling. I go have audio demos before anything to ensure my purchases. Sure you can still believe best selling bands are having no way to no to be successful. But not for me. and that's exactly why I am saying farewell to you coz this is simply a conversation between people having different values and nothing's ever going to happen.

Glad to know people are still liking starcraft like a cult though. Cya around hopefully.

I don't like that much the recent Metallica stuff either, but their first 5 albums are absolutely amazing and they'll always be one of my favourite heavy metal bands for that.

That would be good to hear indeed, if they had released anything at least decent after Justice, which they didn't, and if they hadn't deteriorated as a live band either, which they did. Nowadays, I'd say it's a drawback rather than a plus to have them perform at anything. They've been dead for decades now, time to accept it and move on.

Besides, it's Blizzcon, and considering the typical audience for such things, I'm sure that something a bit more "contemporary" would've been a better fit.

What is the typical audience for Blizzcon?

I think a Lana Del Rey concert goes with everything btw.

His show in sc2 stream was shit but that was not the reason why he was there. He played ~1 hour long concert.

I have saw metallica in 2008 and 2012. Great concerts no doubt. But Hetfield has lost his great singing voice, Lars (my biggest drum idol) can't drum anymore. And somehow his drums sound awful shit. I blame his drum technician for that. Also guitars doesn't sound so good anymore.

When your games are getting worse with every year you call Metallica. Hope LotV and HotS are good next year or they will have to dig up John Bonham...

I can't believe the amount of negativity in this thread. The content of this thread feels like a comment board of a Metallica post on 9gag.

Sure, Metallica peaked as a band long ago but can't we appreciate the excellent career they have made over the years? Their 80s and early 90s material are still massively popular and they seem to be pretty damn popular at least in Northern Europe. If I was already going to Blizzcon, I would be fucking pumped to see Metallica of all bands to boot.
