Sure, Metallica peaked as a band long ago but can't we appreciate the excellent career they have made over the years? Their 80s and early 90s material are still massively popular and they seem to be pretty damn popular at least in Northern Europe. If I was already going to Blizzcon, I would be fucking pumped to see Metallica of all bands to boot.
It's just another chance for people to show of their identities. "Look at me, I don't like Metallica, I prefer Iron Maiden". or "Metallica hasn't made anything good since blablabla and I copied this opinion from someone else who I think is cool, so it must be true"
Most people eventually outgrow this sort of behaviour where they have to use other peoples work to reflect their own unique identity, as if they have one.

Have you thought of the fact that maybe some people just don't like Metallica?
I would say: 1. AJFA 2. Master of Puppets 3. Black Album 4. Ride the Lightning 5. Kill 'Em' All (There are really good song in this album but its recorded in so bad quality that I can't put it higher.) 6. Death Magnetic
.. . . I actually havent never really listened these albums. Few songs only. St.Anger, Load, ReLoad.
Haha "so bad quality", un-metal fan spotted I guess
Maybe the other albums are just overproduced crap?
Btw ...and justice for all is worse quality than kill 'em all. You can't even hear the bass and the production is so damn dry :pp

No, no, that can't be true. I'm absolutely sure that anyone saying metallica is shit is copying it from someone else who they think is cool, whoever that may be..
Man, am I glad people like me have outgrown such behaviour.

I thought nobody actually gets into bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pink Floyd, AC/DC ect. after the age of 14. As in you can still like it but you outgrow the 'look at me, I like this cool real music' faze. It's used as a gateway into liking music, you just move on to contemporary stuff.
Blizzard has always had that teenage heavy-metal thing going on in its games so it fits I guess. One character has to be metal themed or there is a 'rock' concert cameo. Wonder how much it costs to book them.
I think people are looking at this from the wrong angle. This isn't about you. Well, not entirely about you, anyhow.
Metzen and probably a huge number of Blizzard employees are a part of the Metallica generation. This is music that's inspired a lot of their creativity, and through that the games you love, wether it's Diablo, Starcraft or Warcraft, or older Blizzard titles. Imagine, then, that you're holding a Con for your games, and you have the opportunity to invite one of your favorite artists. Fucking awesome, right?
Of course, Cons is not about the host having fun. It's about social networking and marketing, and of catering to the fanbase. But why not do something that matters to you, the host, which can help your fanwork? Why not present music which you find awesome, and meet others who find this music awesome, and together have a even better experience?
You've got your games expos and E3s, where random pop music is licensed because it hits the target demographics. Those that play and buy the games. This music's entirely a marketing gimmick. For a lot of Blizzard though, I believe Metallica is an awesome choice as it's not simply about getting "that wubwub thing the kids today like" - it's about sharing what you love with likeminded people. Through shared, genuine passion and a meaningful experience for both host and antendee, you create an arena of mutual excitement and understanding which resonnates on a far more personal plane than that of ads or fanservice.

Well, someone may ask himself if calling someone else' musical tastes shit is actually that smart or called for. It's a group that draws a lot of attention, and some of their works actually influenced the global music scene: it's a huge thing regardless of personal tastes.
...seriously what do people expect from Blizzzard? Some obscure indie group half of the audience don't know anything about, Avatism, Placido Domingo... Bob Dylan? It's a huge, flashy, recognisable group that actually knows how to play an instrument. Perfect for what's supposed to be a huge nerd party where people come to have fun rather than searching for the meaning of life or listening to something particularly "intelligent". As if music was born for anything but just fun or eventually war, which is perfect for sc2. Regardless of personal tastes, it's quite a thing for Blizzard to call these guys and that's why I think that herMan is right. + Show Spoiler +

Nah, I think it's perfectly possible to get into those bands at later age. Of course, it'll be less common than at younger age, and indeed probably for other reasons.
Metallica at blizzcon is very cool. I don't like the music, but it fits indeed. Also, they're big enough to appeal to lots of people, so it's fine by any standard, imo.

Teenage heavy metal ? Metaliica is 30yo... Also Wtf with the "after the age of 14". Everyone likes different kind of music but your post is just offensive.
If you ever get to play an instrument and liked this kind of music, you will listen and play it for years... I don't like contemporary stuff. Old metal is like old video games. You love the old, you don't like the new. There's exceptions of course, but yeah... i felt offensed by your comment

Well...Cannibal corpse would fit at blizzcon (in a sense) because the singer is reaaaaallllyy into world of warcraft :p (he even have the horde symbol tatooed on his arm)

You should see the crowd at a Rammstein concert. It's even older :p
