And then had to miss ProgPower for birthday celebrations. Lot of cool stuff playing in NYC over the winter, though, so not all is lost.

A bit more "light" take on death, but still enjoyable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIOmIZgbpK4 I dig it but it seems like the drummer wishes this band was a little more brutal. No shortage of high-tempo blastbeats and really hard hitting snare/toms but a fairly high-pitched guitar sound (for death metal anyway) make it sound fairly unique, if not a little too death-core-ish for my refined tastes. Vocalist is a little generic but they don't seem to be very vocal-focused anyway. bear in mind this is all off one song, I didn't end up putting the album on afterward. I probably will at some point, however. Also I think this thread should be on the top of the list as often as possible so expect a lot more spam from me. On a bit of a doom trip right now and will post findings here. Currently listening to Wo Fat, a stoner/psych/doom ensemble. Clean vocals and, like most stoner/doom bands, shows heavy influence from black sabbath.

i say they are. my thinking behind my answer is this: "The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath attracted large audiences, though they were often derided by critics, a status common throughout the history of the genre. " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music Welcome! ![]() Well to tell if a band is a heavy metal band, we would have to define, what makes a band heavy metal!? Especially in this time of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath the edge between "rock" and "metal" is not very clear! While all of the mentioned bands contributed musical influences and styles, that we now say that it is "metal", I would try to see "how much metal" they were. And for me Led Zeppelin is on the "rock side". Yes, they stepped into heavy metal territory, but not so much, that I would call them a heavy metal band. If Rage are playing with their Lingua Mortis orchestra, would you describe them as a "classical band"? I think not! The same goes to Deep Purple in this list. In my eyes only Black Sabbath is more into metal. But on the other side, they still have a strong foot in "rock", so I wouldn't completely list them in heavy metal either! On their plus side, they introduced one of the most important musical "styles" into rock/metal: the (over)usage of the diabolus in musica / tritone! So: Get out the popcorn! ![]()

All releases in order: The Ruins of Beverast - Unlock the shrine: + Show Spoiler + The Ruins of Beverast - Rain upon the Impure + Show Spoiler + The Ruins of Beverast - Foulest Semen of a sheltered Elite + Show Spoiler + The Ruins of Beverast - Blood Vaults: The Blazing Gospel of Heinrich Kramer + Show Spoiler + I personally think the project is really interesting, perhaps someone might want to hear into it and even support this one man band via buying his stuff EDIT: Moving this thread to the Media section has killed it fucking dead, anyone in here interested in trying to lobby it back into the general community part?

So: Get out the popcorn! ![]() as you've nicely chronicled the definitions, tastes and technology have changed over the past 45 years. However, prior to 1973 Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath were the primary dominant forces in the heavy metal genre. Its formation and deepest roots were grown via the work of these 3 bands. "With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion and fast guitar solos." http://audials.com/en/genres/heavy_metal.html This song has it all... blues ( with teh obligatory mysoginistic undertones )... guitar and drums centred sound.. fast guitar solos... and a prodigy named John Paul Jones holding it all together. ![]() Therefore, Led Zeppelin is a heavy metal band.
