Either way you twist or turn this, Metallica coming to Blizzcon is MASSIVE. Maybe all of us are not fans, but having such a big name at a nerd fest will be awesome! You closed minded ppl who are naysayers - open your mind and think for a second. Ye sure maybe you arent a hardcore rocker (Metallica isnt that hardcore btw) but wouldnt it be exciting to learn something new and hear some new music? You get a lot of bang for ur buck.

Mind you not everyone loves Darude Sandstorm....so I think this is really cool! WELL DONE BLIZZ :D

If metallica plays at any kind of festival in Europe it's as headliner. Metallica coming to Blizzcon is huge. Most 'nerds' I know are also into that kind of music so a band like that playing at Blizzcon is not that far-fetched.

In terms of audience, Metallica fits a large age group, from teens to people in their fifties. Skrillex, on the other hand, only appeals to teenagers.

From my experience a pretty sizable chunk of gamers are into metal. That was already the case in the 90's (when I was a teen) and heavy rock music has, as gaming, become a lot more mainstream since then (as in not only "rockers" listen to rock as it has been in previous decades). Besides Metallica is one of those bands that's so big that it draws an audience from all ages (well, 10-50 at least) and walks of life. At least around these parts they do.

Sure, Metallica peaked as a band long ago but can't we appreciate the excellent career they have made over the years? Their 80s and early 90s material are still massively popular and they seem to be pretty damn popular at least in Northern Europe. If I was already going to Blizzcon, I would be fucking pumped to see Metallica of all bands to boot.

It's just another chance for people to show of their identities. "Look at me, I don't like Metallica, I prefer Iron Maiden". or "Metallica hasn't made anything good since blablabla and I copied this opinion from someone else who I think is cool, so it must be true"

Most people eventually outgrow this sort of behaviour where they have to use other peoples work to reflect their own unique identity, as if they have one.

Have you thought of the fact that maybe some people just don't like Metallica?
No, no, that can't be true. I'm absolutely sure that anyone saying metallica is shit is copying it from someone else who they think is cool, whoever that may be..

Man, am I glad people like me have outgrown such behaviour.

I thought nobody actually gets into bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pink Floyd, AC/DC ect. after the age of 14. As in you can still like it but you outgrow the 'look at me, I like this cool real music' faze. It's used as a gateway into liking music, you just move on to contemporary stuff.

What drugs are you on? O_o

I'm not on drugs, that's why I don't listen to them. (though Pink Floyd and AC/DC <3)

On a more serious note, people need to work on their reading comprehension. Most people start listening to these bands in the 10-14 age bracket, it is perfectly normal to still listen to them after that age. At some point you can only listen to the same song so many times and you just go and look for something new. I would find it very strange for some 25 year old to say the only thing he has ever listened to in the last 15 years was Metallica.

edit: Even Justin Bieber listened to Metallica when he was a kid and uses it as inspiration now. its not a big deal.

Show nested quote +
He said: ''I like rock music, I like Guns N' Roses and Metallica. The Beatles. I like Metallica's 'Fade to Black' and 'One'. It's edgy and emotional with those instruments and electric guitars and stuff.''

http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/20120704justin-bieber-heavy-metal.html

So you have to be/or are on drugs if you listen to these bands or Metal in general.
Interesting.

Blizzard has always had that teenage heavy-metal thing going on in its games so it fits I guess. One character has to be metal themed or there is a 'rock' concert cameo. Wonder how much it costs to book them.

I've never gotten the whole "well, I liked this music when I was a kid, but I outgrew them" mentality. Like that sounds any less smug than saying you listen only to "real music". Sure, my musical tastes have widened and there are some bands that don't get much play time any more, if any (so much good music, so little time), but overall the music that I liked when I was 16 is stuff that I still listen too today.
Also, you say "contemporary stuff", as if those bands aren't still releasing new stuff (well, not Pink Floyd) and metal and hardrock in general aren't constantly evolving contemporary genres.

Well - my childhood heroes.. Way to go Blizzcon, way to go :D

Off-topic a bit though - Metallica has always been "not well formed" - they changed their bass guitar 4 times - with 4 times completely change of the band's "direction"

Most people love them for the Pure Thrash (I don't mean thrash as a garbage, but thrash as thrash - as the genre), I however love them for their Load/Reload/Garage-inc. days.. The problem ofc. - their bass went out of the band, got a new one, and St. Anger was pure garbage by my music standards TBH..

YES - they've made master pieces such as Enter Sandman - but they've done a lot of stuff sound good on luck too

Regardless - happy to see/hear that one of my childhood bands is still alive and kicking well (ocassionally) somewhere/somehow :D
Another world, another place, another universe, won the race.. :) ;) :P

I personally think it's a terrible choice to go with Metallica, but since I already don't care that much about Blizzcon and am not going, it doesn't actually affect me whatsoever, so I don't see the problem. Even if I were going it wouldn't be a problem for me to just... not be at the Metallica concert.

I do have an issue with people saying Blizzard can do what they want though.
I mean, yeah, they can, but they still want to appeal to their fans, so they can't pick up literally anyone and have them play. They probably couldn't have gone with an experimental jazz performance from a three-piece, y'know, cus that would royally piss off a lot of the attendees. The concert has definitely become a big part of the Blizzcon experience for people, so there are expectations to it.

Well, compare it to the way the mods and admins run TL. Obviously, they want to make it a great forum everyone can enjoy, and I would say they succeed. However, they have this, the first TL commandment:

1. This is our house.

This is our house and you are our guests. We will do everything in our power to treat everyone with respect and accommodate everyone's wishes, but this is a private site, so when you're here, you abide by our rules. We're not obligated to observe anyone's notions of free speech or fairness, but we will try to.

It's the same with Blizzcon. They want to create an environment where everyone can have fun, and it's very successful, but in the end it's their event, so they make the decisions. They're not going to listen to every little complaint, because it's their house, so while they're trying their hardest to make a great gaming event for everyone, they don't have to listen to you, so show a bit of respect for that.

dont blame wow players, they payed for the shit we call sc2 for example. praise them, love them, kiss ever stone they touch. and ofc a lot of fun for all that go to this con. i think its boring because blizzard has not really games to fill a convention but for blizzard fan boys the perfect place i guess.

well anyway, if you love sc2 go there kiss all wow players because they dont give a fuck about your game but they keep it alive.

Should probably curb the headbangin while I'm there. Shit hurts when I go overboard, don't want to tear my bridging veins and give myself a subdural. This is going to be great!

maybe its " likening starcraft to a cult" ? not sure.

however, i do know that "cult-like following" and just "cult" are completely different things.

again back to wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_following

Blizzard's big 3 universes enjoy a cult like or cult following.
20,000+ gather almost every year as an example of that enthusiasm.
its called Blizzcon.

FYI playing video games is more teenage than listening to metallica is.

Wait, actually most teenagers already outgrow playing video games by that age.

Think Blizzard will get DMCA'd after they find out its streamed? This band loves the tears.
