Honestly, I don't really understand. Don't they always sell out of tickets? While it's nice that they got a well-known band (although I would argue that they are pretty bad nowadays), I don't see where the profit is here. They aren't selling any more tickets here. Maybe this will cause people to buy their virtual tickets, but that sort of goes against the point of a live concert...

Yuck. Not a huge fan of Metallica, but props to Blizzard for booking them!

Wonder how much money it took :o
I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

EA is holding a big community event for Command & Conquer on November 7-10 to compete against Blizzcon. Its sold out with 70,000 seats sold in the epicentre of C&C fandom Berlin, Germany. The concert at the end features U2, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are re-uniting with John Bonham's son on drums and Julian Lennon playing for his father John.

Kane will be there with 1,000 Nod Brothers in Cosplay.

Clearly, its a lot more fun to be a C&C fan instead of a Starcraft fan.

Blizzard sucks my balls.

Too bad James can't sing anymore, Lars is as talentless as he is entitled, and Death Magnetic was produced by a brain-dead monkey on heroin. As far as mainstream metal acts go, they could have gone for Mastodon at least.

this is the event where Blizzard spents its extra cash. its not made to make a profit.

:O Even though I haven't listened to any recent Metallica, I still think this is pretty awesome. Really wish I was going T_T

Also that version of "One" with the SC sounds is really nostalgic. I remember downloading it a long time ago :O

Metallica has been irrelevant to me since St. Anger, but this is cool nonetheless! Too bad about Lou Reed, I enjoyed Lulu to some extent - he would've been fun to see at Blizzcon.

I flew about ~1300 miles to see the Big 4 in California a couple years back. While I was mostly excited for Anthrax, Metallica put on one hell of a show. And while I don't listen to Metallica often, Death Magnetic was actually really good, and I don't think they could've gotten a better, big band to play at something like this. This is so epic.

Another choice could've been.. Cannibal Corpse? Since Corpsegrinder likes WoW so much? But that would not draw the crowd or the attention that Metallica gets.

And most music at most events is shit indie\alt rock garbage anyway.

They will play mostly badass thrash, they will play some more chill/emotional stuff, and it will be a great show.

St. Anger was a steaming pile of shit, but Death Magnetic has some decent songs on it that belong with their older thrash stuff.

Okay what do you consider a good band?

Troll bait. Move on.

And the guy that said the Black Album was good need to be tied on a chair in front of loud as fuck speakers and get blasted with some real Metal. The Black Album wasnt even Metal anymore and as Mainstream as it gets. Only Nothin else Matters was good despite being a ballad and radio friendly.
And St. Anger and Death Magnetic were quite good. Not like the old stuff but it was at least the return to hard music.

This is a good choice. Live they are still a very good Band.

Its not really about garnering a larger audience, but just providing entertainment for the audience in attendance. No profit to be made in signing a band to perform at Blizzcon. The people that want to go to Blizzcon already decided to go before Metallica was announced, and those that aren't going will not be swayed to attend because of a longstanding band like Metallica.

Besides, its not like they will perform a dozen songs of their greatest hits; have two or three other bands to open; and close out the entire night. They will probably perform 3-4 songs; collect a paycheck; and call it a night.

Does Metallica even know the games Blizzard has developed?

The choice is questionable though, but I think they chose Metallica over more modern bands because of the age demographics. I could be wrong, but I think a large portion of Blizzard fans probably enjoyed a Metallica song here and there in the 90's.

Did you even listen to St. Anger? The Snare Drum alone is a reason to destroy every mp3, cd etc of this album.

Good move Blizzard - but that wont make you be a good game developer. Also the EA reference completly destroyed any joy of hearing the booking of Metallica

I can see how this could increase customers to pay for the stream for added content.

I didn't think of that part.

I just registered, just to come in and post a reply to this thread.
Coz' I really can't stand the bullshit from OP.

1st: Your damn Led Zeppelin is a f---ing rock band. Yes. Metal is considered part of rock genre and some even consider it a sub genre of rock, which would be a different story from what I'm talking here. But a big NO for anyone to even start to compare. You trying to compare banana and cucumber? Originated from 70-80s being just thrash metal, to today we see vast amount of sub genres in metal music. Metal's no longer a branch on this tree called rock. It has its own root, stem and branches. Comparing it to rock is a completely invalid and irrelevant comparison.

2nd: I don't know how many years you've been listening to metal(or how many torrents you seeded?) that you even dare to say metal may or may not come close to 10% of anything. I've been a metal fan and musician since 05' and I'm not even confident to say I've listened to all of them. Not to forgot, there are always better composed but poorly produced stuff in underground community. So "few metal bands"? Lol. You just rendered your opinion pretty weak and shaky since you proved that your claim is never neutral and even probably false. Also. You can't appreciate metal, it's your own problem. Never really a fact that you can just jump out and spit out, or force anyone else to agree. However since you did come out here and shout loud, I would be here to attack it all I want all day long. Even non-metal fans/metal haters could still easily agree there are reasons for this type of music to exist since it survived till today going through the times of punk(unless they've got no logical mind with them at all to think) Need not for me to even start to write a billion words essay to educate you the better parts of metal. Coz it ain't a neutral opinion for everyone to appreciate anway, and which is just what you have just done. But still, everyone can see that metal exist till today. Bands like Metallica, slayer which people here grew up listening to are in their 50s and still rocking on. Opposite to what you said. Where something not nearly as 10% as good as something else should be eliminated and become history long ago. What, you mean you don't believe how humans are rational behaving in this?

And till date there are all sorts of metal bands catering to different groups of people. Kids have their metalcores and breakdowns, veterans still have their traditional names(Cannible corpse just released a kick ass new album, soon obituray, though I can't really enjoy it.). Seasoned fans can have all they want, melodic death, death core, technical death. Can't get the point of enjoying extreme genres? Thrash bands are still around(exodus, testament) that you could simply keep banging head non-stop and break you neck. And they do still throw in some clean, slow sounding pieces among all the madness for their fans who wanted that(A trend formally started by metallica with the song fade to black). prefer a bit different voicing and stuff? go get some jent/progressive/math metal. Last I heard, periphery, meshuggah still going strong. And 7/8 strings are becoming the new trend anyway. Ever since I started posting my cover songs on youtube/twitter, there can always be some wild metalbands/artists in a random country just jump out and follow me. And yet here you are, after all this. claiming few metal bands you listened are 10% as good as a f---ing rock band. Hello Dude? Did you really listen to metal?

Back to this topic though

Probably blizzard just thought metallica is the symbol for metal fan and a safer choice for people who are completely new to metal. Which is the sad part. Throughout Metallica's discography there is almost no connection to what Blizzard's been always doing. I'd see some melodic death/black/epic power/gothic/viking metal bands that has quite a number of connections to their fantasy contents of their products. But unfortunately those are even lesser "mainstream" for people to appreciate. For the FPS community though, I guess power metal isn't something so new. #nightwish.

oh hell, almost forgot this. probably metal isn't so new to people playing blizzard games......think about the OST for Zerg.

Metallica is one of those bands.

This isn't the 1980s. Metallica hasn't made decent music since the Black Album and their first 4 thrash albums.

Death magnetic is more like the old albums though.

Sad but true ? Wherever i may roam ? Come on.

There's a few good song on St Anger, but that the worst album imo too.

Ha, where do I get the popcorn for this thread?

I really laughed hard at the Led Zeppelin comparison! As if the world ended in 1980 and there was no music ever since!

Metallicas skill and if they were better in the past (they were! *duck*) aside, yeah they were probably chosen because they are well known. I personally would like to have seen Machinae Supremacy! If there is a metal band that is connected to video games, it would be them! But they would have to be brought to the US...

Still I hope this concert is on the livestream! Would like to see some gamers bang their heads

Moving along...

Nah not really. I've been lurking TL for as long as I can remember since 2009. I've periodically stopped updating it a few times between the years. But've been checking it few times daily since last year. So I always know I'll eventually need an acc one day. Having a public holiday today so I was having some morning coffee time for browsing and typing.
But true to a certain extent is that I don't like to join too many conversation/interaction nor do I have the time ,once going back to work again.
