Flags of our Fathers - Pretty decent. I thought they were going to focus mainly on the actual fighting though, all of the sidetracking and backstory just seemed like pure fluff and it was distracting. Still need to see Letters from Iwo Jima.
The Bad Sleep Well - My first Kurosawa film and I enjoyed this alot. Must check out the rest of his movies now.
Stray Dog - Earlier work of Kurosawa. A rookie police officer loses his gun on a bus during a heat wave in Tokyo, and then trys to locate the gun fantically. Gets more intense when the gun is believed to have been used in a murder. Good but not really memorable. I can't say I remember much from this.
City of God - Been posted here numerous times already. I will just say I enjoyed it and am going to check out City of Men after this.
Sharkwater - Was curious about this for awhile now, especially since I have had a fascination with sharks since I was a child. While it was pretty informative about just how large the shark fin industry is, it does seem to rely on shock footage (people fining the sharks then tossing them overboard, and the camera zooms in on a shark that's cut in half and drifting down to the bottom.) Such obvious shock documentation did annoy me to some extent. There was also a part where he was with the Sea Shepard off Guatamala trying to stop shark finning, with their trademark ship ramming bullshit. Honestly felt emotional after it, still saddens me that so many sharks are killed for trivial reasons.
Piranha - Was expecting it to be pretty stupid ever since I saw the previews. Alot more gore/people getting eaten to the bone then I was expecting. Also a good number of topless chicks, including Gianna Michaels. Overall I have to say I enjoyed this.

Akira is especially good, including incredible soundtrack and some innovative directing (critics were commenting on the use of silence in this movie, it gives some scenes this additional kick and it occurs at the moments you wouldn't expect).
And it's available in 1080p now!
I've seen Akira a few years back and I remember loving it, haha really an awesome movie. I'll definitely check out Ghost in the Shell, thanks for the suggestions!! :D
On topic, Just saw Thor.
It was better than I expected, but still pretty meh.
7/10
I just rewathced Akira. It was 100x better the second time watching it. I think my brain was to involved the first time and I failed to just experience it. I also think the series for Ghost and Shell is much better than the movies but they are still good.
It's the best movie I've seen in a long time. I'm putting it above most of my other favorites because it's not self-indulgent like they are. It's relevant, painful, compelling, beautifully shot and human. If you feel like stabbing yourself in the gut a bit, go for it.
Saw a lot of movies last week. Some of them I've seen before:
Hamburger Hill - Vietnam War movie about beleaguered American soldiers trying to take the eponymous hill. Highlights how shitty American soldiers were treated during that time period and how the Free Love movement gave them nothing to come back to. Never saw it before.
Black Hawk Down - Somalian Conflict story about a failed Clinton military operation. Has a huge cast of recognizable faces. Very good movie. Never saw it before.
Casino Royale - Le Chiffre is trying to raise money for the mysterious organization Quantum through an ultra-high stakes poker game in Monte Carlo. New 00 Agent James Bond tries to stop him. Eva Green is so beautiful. Disappointing ending, but entertaining throughout. Craig is a great Bond. Seen it many times before.
Quantum of Solace - Quantum is trying to influence the government of Bolivia by supporting a major military junta and its crazy rapist general. James Bond is out for revenge for their manipulation of foreign agents. Entertaining still but falls into the category of 'lesser Bond films.' + Show Spoiler +
He doesn't even sleep with the main girl!
Saw it before.
Layer Cake - British gangster film about an unnamed man (Daniel Craig) trying to make it as a drug selling gangster. This is a very good film; its existence is the reason why Craig was chosen as the next James Bond. Never seen it in full before. Again, worth watching.
Transformers - Robots hitting each other and Shia Laboef stammering as a result of aforementioned robots and Megan Fox's sweaty hotness. You watch it because it's cool, not good. Seen it many times before but it was on TV and I wanted noise in the room.
Thor - Odin kicks his arrogant son Thor out of Asgard and down to Midgard in order to humble him. Loki becomes a problem for everyone and upsets the balance of things. Asgard is really visually cool and actually featured a lot in the movie. Good cast and an entertaining hero film. + Show Spoiler +
The love story between Thor and Natalie Portman is POINTLESS however and detracts a little from the movie. He knows her for like 12 hours total and we're supposed to believe they have something. Plus, Sif is way hotter.
The Hurt Locker - The Best Picture winning film about an American bomb unit in Iraq. Never saw it before. Has some very tense scenes but is not that great a movie. It lacks a sustained plot and the central character is not identifiable or likable. That year was really weak for Best Picture films or people needed to look at the others besides Avatar and this one.
Kill The Irishman Absolutely loved it, thought it was a great movie. Story was likeable so were the maincharacters.
With the whole rapture thing going on last weekend i decided to go along with it and watched the movie 2012.
Thought it wasnt a great movie. It was way over the top on many levels. However, if you dont expect to be amazed by brilliant acting and story it will entertain you enough to watch it
I Just saw Ip man, and it might have been the best martial arts movie i've ever seen! is it just me though or is it a bit nationalist/anti-japanese? :|
