You'd probably be better off firing more arrows faster than to bother setting each arrow on fire when it's really not going to add any extra damage. It's certainly not going to engulf them in flames unless they happen to be carrying gasoline in their pockets.
Well you still use tracer bullets these days so you can see where your shots are landing.

Fire arrows are actually very useful. Mostly for letting the archers use them to set distance and adjust the next shot(like tracers do today) and secondly to put fear into their opponents.

Fire arrows isn't a foreign concept... Many other TV shows (including those aired in Asia) based on similar time settings have used fire arrows before, it's effective because everything back then would be made out of wood and burn during battle. The visual effect can also be intimidating, like Tippecanoe said ^^

Whether it is stupid to have high moral standards or not depends on your own moral compass I suppose, but Ned and Catelyn are honest, fair and both have strong beliefs in justice. Mind you, everything had to go wrong for the Starks for their actions to come back and hurt them, but whether you use hindsight and call that stupid or you say "damn, GRRM gave the Lannisters some thickass plot armour" depends on your own view on morality. That is, while you can blame the Starks for being too proud to sink to the level of the Lannisters to fight deception with deception, plot with plot, but on the other hand, they were in a position to not need to change given their initial advantage.
Here's what fucked up for the Starks: 1. Robert getting killed by a boar 2. Littlefinger and the city watch betraying Ned 3. Sansa betraying her family 4. Joffrey's unpredictable execution of Ned 5. Lysa's stupidity leading to Tyrion's freedom 6. Lysa betraying the Starks' war effort 7. Theon betraying the Starks' war effort 8. Renly being killed by magic 9. Stannis being a stubborn fool 10. The Tyrells siding with the Lannisters
These are just what I can think up on the top of my head. I know this was posted a couple pages back, but it's a pretty good list. I can't for the life of me remember #3 though... Could someone remind me? I don't remember seeing her betray her family at all... I can maybe see her lying out of her ass to not get hanged, but otherwise I'm drawing a blank. I also disagree with #1. Yeah, it screwed the Starks over but I still think that was calculated and not just happenstance. I don't think it's ever explicitly shown but wasn't it strongly hinted at that it was an "accident", considering his entourage on that hunting trip was pretty much completely Lannister-aligned? It allows the Lannisters access to the throne before Joffrey's bastardness is revealed and gives them total power. Too good for them to just be a coincidence. At least, that's how I interpreted it... #3 is when Sansa went off to Cersei and told her all about Ned's plans to move back to Winterfell... At the time Sansa was still in love with Joffrey and wanted to say good-bye, but her father told her not to, so she ran off to the queen instead.

I hate the Starks for being idiots, the biggest one being Catelyn. I hope they all die except for Arya.

Amen to that. Robb was fine until he delagated his cock to do all the thinking instead of his head. Male Stark line ended with Ned.

lol Robb isn't some seasoned war general. keep in mind he is a 16 year old kid and he has urges. yes he's the king in the north blah blah blah, but throughout the show he's shown that he's still a kid and those momentary lapses in judgment do show for someone who has a lot on his shoulders (such as the fate of this whole fucking war).

Catelyn is definatley the dumbest (Sansa gets a VERY close second) but I think Robb Stark is getting a bad rap. Its not his fault Theon betrayed Winterfell. And his plan to let every man born of iron walk out alive and return home if they kill Theon will probably end up saving many many lives. His plan to march south and put Jofferys head on a pike is a just cause. His battle strategies have all been flawless as his army is undefeated. He knows he cannt trade the kingslayer for two girls and expect his head to remain attached to his neck.
All of the problems with Robbs campain have been caused by his family, mainly by his mother. He should have his mothers head chopped off for releasing Jamie but he is not heartless like Joffrey. I know I couldn't behead my mom.
Robb Stark is definatley my favorite character in the show so far

I like Sansa. I think she's developed as much as Arya has. Both have maintained their dignity - though Arya is a dirty, hungry ragamuffin and Sansa is an emotionally brutalized hostage - they also continue to be strong and graceful. I think all the Stark children handle themselves with a certain "Starkness" that the young actors express well in their physical performances. I'm probably projecting.

Robb made the classic Risk folly. Conquesting before securing territory. Now he is going to lose his continent bonus and spend more troops than he would have gained trying to reconquer it. = (
|
And, Catelyn isn't a Stark. She is a Tully. We are talking about the idiotness of Starks... Speaking of which...
This might be fitting... 2:34 to 2:50... about the Starks...LOL

House Greyjoy got their butts kicked in the a rebellion not long ago. Generally when you get your ass kicked you cannt project much force outside your own borders. Robb Stark's councelor even said he could send a raven to his bastard son and get him to raise 100 or so swords to retake the lands. They know only small groups are holding these towns.
In risk when a small group attacks my backside I don't all out retreat. I just reinforce the back and take it back(dice be willing)

Corrik, that video is a straight spoiler for events that haven't happened yet, you should probably remove it.

Finally saw the episode 9 of last sunday.
Oh man that was good. The battle was incredible quality for a TV Series and its even really good by movie standards. Acting, direction and quality of scenery/image are still at the top !
Lets all pray they wont end the serie prematurely !
Too bad the season ends this sunday

tyrion/varys are clearly the smartest ppl in the show and no one can compete with their intelligence imo.
john snow/dany and joffrey are all pretty dumb. joffrey is mentally retarded haha. But you can't really blame them for their stupidity, dany was raised in isolation, joffrey happened to have some bad genes.
Actually i would make the argument that john snow is the dumbest person on the show. he never seems to take in what people tell him.
Seems like a lot of ppl in this thread seem to think that making bad decisions is from a lack of intelligence. This of course is not true, most of the bad decisions in this show stem from strong emotions like love. Cersei/robb being good examples.

Here is the thing though... they just put down that rebellion in the Iron Islands (I believe approximately 7-10 years ago at this point)... What makes Robb think they would actually help him?

Littlefinger is definetly up there with tyrion and varys, but where tyrion and varys have higher goals Petyr is entirely self-centered and will plot for his own interests.

In terms of intelligence...
I would probably go something like this...
1. Varys 2. LittleFinger 3. Tywin 4. Tyrion
At fifth, it gets cloudier... I might even be inclined to go with Jaime there or GASP... The Hound?... I know that seems Lannister biased, but it is kind of clear the Lannisters are the most able at this point.

I think he hoped that the chance get some revenge on the Baratheon/Lannister houses at the expence of helping the Stark one was worth it.
Turn out he was wrong lol

At 5th I'd have to put Jorah Mormont. This guy is the sole reason Dany is not dead IMO. Is advice to her is always good
