Im not entirly sure I agree. House Greyjoy got their butts kicked in the a rebellion not long ago. Generally when you get your ass kicked you cannt project much force outside your own borders. Robb Stark's councelor even said he could send a raven to his bastard son and get him to raise 100 or so swords to retake the lands. They know only small groups are holding these towns.
In risk when a small group attacks my backside I don't all out retreat. I just reinforce the back and take it back(dice be willing)
Here is the thing though... they just put down that rebellion in the Iron Islands (I believe approximately 7-10 years ago at this point)... What makes Robb think they would actually help him?
I think he hoped that the chance get some revenge on the Baratheon/Lannister houses at the expence of helping the Stark one was worth it.
Turn out he was wrong lol
Perhaps... but Robb had to know he was in the weaker position. Of the 4 vying for the throne down south, he had the weakest position. And, his was the most accessible to the Ironmen (though you could argue Lannisport/Casterly Rock were, but they were defended unlike the North).
And, with Moat Caitlin, once it is taken... it chokes off the North from Robb.
AND, Robb has no sea power like all the other 3 powers had... Robb had no way to retailiate back on the Iron Islands...
I don't know, but the more you put out the pros/cons on paper of attacking the North versus the other factions... It seemsl ike a no brainer to go to war with Robb on their part.

john snow/dany and joffrey are all pretty dumb. joffrey is mentally retarded haha. But you can't really blame them for their stupidity, dany was raised in isolation, joffrey happened to have some bad genes.
Actually i would make the argument that john snow is the dumbest person on the show. he never seems to take in what people tell him.
Seems like a lot of ppl in this thread seem to think that making bad decisions is from a lack of intelligence. This of course is not true, most of the bad decisions in this show stem from strong emotions like love. Cersei/robb being good examples.
remember jon was emotionally stunted growing up. never got loved, always trying to prove himself as a stark, but will never be one.

Anyone know when season 3 is coming out ?
My guess is they will keep the same pattern as season 1 and 2, so spring 2013.

I would probably go something like this...
1. Varys 2. LittleFinger 3. Tywin 4. Tyrion
At fifth, it gets cloudier... I might even be inclined to go with Jaime there or GASP... The Hound?... I know that seems Lannister biased, but it is kind of clear the Lannisters are the most able at this point.
No way you cannot put tyrion in the top 2 imo. He plays hand of king pretty much perfectly.
tywin is the most capable leader on the show, but he still makes tons of mistakes. neglecting tyrions capabilities up until he makes him the hand, and making amateur assumptions about robb stark. Imo robb is as smart and a more mature person than tywin. Robbs weaknesses compared to tywin is that he doesn't use fear and violence, which is tywins strongest point and that's what makes tywin more respectable than robb, and a better leader.
5th is jorah mormont imo, his advice to dany is always good.

I can see it now, Tony Stark suddenly travels back in time to aid his ancestors in the war. Its even foreshadowed when Kal Drogo says he will kill Iron Men!

At 5th I'd have to put Jorah Mormont. This guy is the sole reason Dany is not dead IMO. Is advice to her is always good
I wouldn't put Jorah at 5th. All of his decisions are just not retarded as opposed to smart. IMO, Dany is so emotionally charged, that Jorah's advice only makes him seem smart. Hell, he may be smart, but we haven't seen enough of him to put him with the likes of Varys, LittleFinger, and Tyrion imo.
Dont know why people would think Robb is stupid. Everything he has done so far was pretty smart. He seems to be a very good tactician and diplomat plus a leader that people would follow. He got betrayed by someone he considered a friend and by his mother. That's hardly being stupid.

Actually, yes, I would. I think LittleFinger is perhaps actually 1st upon further reflection. But, remember how Tyrion was duped with his marriage? Tywin's decision to feint in the North to save King's Landing was one of the most intelligent decisions so far made by any character.
Varys is hard to judge because he actually has so much more information than every one else to less complicate what he does.
The top 3 could be argued, but I would CLEARLY put Tyrion at 4th and struggle at position 5.
Tyrion has no control over his emotions and desires. (Shae) I'm not sure if that directly correlates to intelligence, but in terms of being a player in pushes him way down the list.

Let me clarify. After her father was murdered and she became a hostage, Sansa has done the best that her shitty situation allows. After all she is still alive. Joffery and Cersei are incredibly cruel towards her but she never lets up her " Joffery is my beloved" line. This keeps her alive. Tyrion comments "Maybe you'll survive us yet" She is the only character in the series who is consistently thrown into lose lose situations. Eg. Leave with the hound or stay in Kings Landing.

Hard to have sympathy for her when she helped create her own shitty situations. Lying about the Arya/Joffrey situation (-> Lady killed) and then snitching to the Queen about Ned's plans to get them out of King's Landing (-> Arya/Sansa don't get to to Winterfell).

The lying about the Arya/Joffrey fight was dumb but understandable for a girl who has not much love for her sister. The telling Cersei about her father's plans was idiotic though... that she couldn't see what was going on whatsoever. Ned should've shared more with her though, she wasn't a baby and should've been told who her enemies were.

You can also see her putting out her feelers on how she can manipulate events in small ways. I'd point to her attempts to goad Joffrey to joining the front line and presumably in a position where he could die. I honestly hated her, Tyrion, and Tywin in the books, but I'm finding new sympathy for all three. (Although some people find these slight changes rather upsetting.)

1. Tywin - based on his experience. He underestimated Robb, sure, but quickly adapted to rectify this mistake. He's got the best brains of them all though, as he's got the whole package: strategy, politics, frontline combat. He even showed that he can get over petty grievances by appointing Tyrion to the Hand position. 2. Tyrion - because he actually figures stuff out and solves problems. 3. Littlefinger - for being good at word-games and courtplay. 4. Varys - he's smart, no doubt, but like it was mentioned earlier he also has access to the most information, making it easy for him.
