Detroit has been a franchise in peril for the last 3 years, but it hasnt stopped the casual NHL watcher or the broadcasters from talking about what a great GM Holland is and how year after year they keep steady. They arent. They are getting worse. And a large part of that is Holland's addiction to older players that not only suck but eat up ice time from young players that you might want to eventual play. Even when they make big money signings, the signings are for unnecessary players like Alferdson and Samuelson. Its especially annoying because its pretty obvious that we are in the twilight of Datsyuks' career and as things are going he will never win another cup. First of all, it's one thing to have an opinion on something. Nobody's denying you that. It's another to bring the topic up constantly, saying the same things over and over. Just taking a quick look, you've brought it up five times this week, each time saying the exact same things (hence the comparison to Jimmy). Secondly, Alfredsson has 10 points in 12 games so far. Samuelsson's been on IR pretty much the entire time back with Detroit, but $3 million for a 40+ point player is perfectly reasonable. You complain about Detroit getting worse. Every team gets worse. You think that a team can make the playoffs for over 20 years straight and continually get better? Look around the league. Teams like Carolina, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, Philadelphia, , etc, were all amongst the top some years ago. So many GM's have had teams amongst the best in the league that some years later are near the bottom, yet the ONE GM in the league who consistently stays near the top is the one you constantly target...? This is like coming on here to complain every time Crosby makes a mistake on the ice.

You think that a team can make the playoffs for over 20 years straight and continually get better? He is on pace -- thanks to play with Datsyuk-Zetterberg, to be where Brunner would have been. For more money. But like I said, it isnt the issue. The issue is they have an awful defense, they knew they would have an awful defense, and they continued to ignore that while 'shoring up' the forward line with questionable additions. There is nothing wrong with missing the playoffs if it means that you get to restock picks, and there is nothing wrong with missing the playoffs if it means letting your 25 year old AHL'ers that presumably you still hope to use on the NHL team getting some experience over old veterans. The concept of 'make playoffs every year and thats it' is exactly why franchises like the Flames are such a disaster. Look around the league. Just because I dont live in Somalia doesnt mean I cant complain about the way Canada is being run.

Having just played the Kings, its appalling the difference in Defensive zone coverage between the leafs and the Kings. I dont understand how the leafs win games. Its a pure fire drill.... the leafs defensive zone is worse than anything I have ever seen from the Oilers in the last five years. Thats saying something.

The Oilers have had the worst puck luck all year. Tonight alone we've hit the post four times. I dont even know what to say. Last year the start of the year we just like played awful but kept winning, but like this year... we playing so well but just get these awful bounces. As for "its those damn giveaways and turnovers." Yeah, thats the whole reason everyone says we suck at defence, we have a lot of turnovers. According to the game sheets the leafs have more than we do. EDIT: Yeah, the wheels have fallen off.

We come out, play hard. Dominate the play, hit all the posts, other goaltender makes a massive save and then suddenly its in the back of our net. This repeats itself twice, and suddenly the wheels fall off and we lose a game we were very much in. I dont even understand. We just have the worst puckluck in the league. I dont even know what else to say. Its incredibly frustrating.

There's a lot of room to improve in other areas though. >_<

I dont even know... 16-2 this period alone, and the leafs have the only goal. All these ten bell chances, no goals. I just... Gaaah.

Backstrom (the MIN goalie) had a positively awful night. Watching through a game real fast at the end of the day is awesome. I wish they did a similar deal that EAS did with Madden. $100 for NHL14 and game center woulda been rad.

To be fair though, the Leafs scored the fourth goal early in the 3rd period and did what we do best... sit on our lead and cross our fingers. Had the score been less lopsided, the shot difference wouldn't be thatttt bad. I'm just glad Reimer got the shutout. The guy may not have as much natural talent as Bernier, but he works his ass off and deserves so much credit. But yeah, the Leafs bandwagon is always open to you Oilers fans ![]()
