I know, I broke my own rule.
lol, u guys are so serious its comical. u manage to turn the game of hockey into work. same thing happens in the LR threads. There is some amazing SC2 tourney action going on and i get flamed for saying a game or series was hella fun to watch i guess saying David Kim and DUstin Browder are idiots it just a cultural moirree on this board.
I love Don Cherry. Don says he endorses the hiring of Brendan Shanahan and he provides video evidence of how good Shanahan will be by rolling some video of Shanahan rag-doll-ing a parade of 90s tomato-cans.
i agree with Don that Shanahan is a good hire. but, if another GM pisses him off he won't be able to drop the gloves and settle it like men.
its pretty sad that CBC's amazing HNIC coverage is going to end this year... tonight was the final regular season night. their web site is awesome.. the videos are great.. the HD never stutter video is great.
Its hard to watch your childhood hero retire. I think I cried just as much if not more than Smyth did.
Smyth just really really loved the game. He brought care and fight into every shift he played. He never had speed, size, strength. He never had a good shot, good stick handling, or any one elite talent except perhaps his ability to deflect pucks. What he did have though is more passion, heart, and compete than any other player in the league. He always went hard into the most important areas. Fought for every inch of ice. Smyth is one of those guys that just always played the game the right way; Smyth is the epitome of what people think of when you say the word Hockey player.
I can't think of a tougher player... I remember Smyth losing probably 10 of his teeth from a Pronger slap shot in the Playoffs against the Sharks. Blood everywhere, he spit out his teeth, went to the bench on his feet and power, then proceeded to set up the overtime winner after no missing a shift. This is a guy that made a career of outworking, and taking crosschecks to the back.
I met Smyth when I was about 9, he told me if I worked hard enough, i could achieve anything. Kind of cliche, sure, but he went out and proved it on a daily basis by carving a damn fine career despite being smaller, slower, and less talented than his peers. This is a guy who played for a team full with a history of greats who managed to break a few records himself and put himself within their ranks. He has the fastest hat trick in Oilers history, tied for first in powerplay goals, third in GWG, 5th in goals, 6th in points...
1270 games, 386 goals, and 842 points.
I could talk about Smyth all day, I love the guy. But I'll leave it at this: The Oilers are a franchise blessed with 10+ years of players like Gretzky and Messier, yet the most beloved Hockey player here in Edmonton is Ryan Smyth. That to me really and truly says something.
But don't worry. His mullet will continue to play hockey, it's just the rest of his body that is retiring.

Number one Smytty memory right there. Triple overtime win which brought the Oilers back into the series. A San Jose victory would have put the Sharks up 3-0 in the series and ended the Oilers' 2006 much earlier. Makes thinking back on that year even harder. Some legendary performances which deserved a Stanley Cup at the end.
Blues just gut shut out by Detroit's AHL goalie and a team that was resting 3 players. I think its officially time to freak out for them, cant imagine Chicago not crushing them in 5.
I hope he is done. Kinda tired of the will he or won't he retire thing from the last 2 years. Looking forward to watching New Jersey retire it's first number some time next year then seeing how unbelievably lopsided the first year ballot voting for Brodeur is in 3 years(I'd be shocked if he doesn't get 100% of the votes).
I'd like to see Brodeur come back for 700 wins, just 12 away. But either way he had an amazing career. Will be weird without him playing in the NHL any more.

Yea I was just thinking Hawks in five too even though I hate Chicago. I optimistically think Detroit can win in 6 games, and I don't like the prospect of a game 7 in Boston.
I think ''optimistically'' is an understatement in that case.
The upset I would see happening is the Jackets over the Pens. If Columbus can grind like 4-5 really tight 1 goal games they might just have a shot at the upset.
Big ducks fan here. It was a wonderful game to close the season against Colorado, and to see Selanne and Jiggy bond for possibly the last time in hockey brought me to tears. I hope we can win the cup one more time for teemu and then retire #8.
A memorable, historic season this was, and it's not even over!
That hit on sedin... Give me a fucking break, end of the season two bottom teams and the guy pulls a hit on Daniel like that? It wasn't even like a last second turn around. Clear lead up and follow up hit from behind in the most dangerous spot. Hopefully see a few games suspension at least.
Ok TL help me win my construction site play off pool.
It's a pretty simple really pick 20 players, goals = 1 point., assist = 1 point, OT winning goals are worth a bonus point. No points for goalies (unless they pick up an assist)

TL + to all that help me win
Playoff pools are generally pretty simple. Pick two teams from each conference you think will make the conference finals and load up on those 4 teams best players.
Also that Sedin hit isn't that bad. The Calgary guy barely hit him in the back of his shoulder. I don''t know how Sedin was KOed after that hit.

If Howard plays the way he played last playoffs and the Bruins dont take this series seriously, the Wings will force it to 6 but Raask is the superior goalie and Boston has an actual NHL defense. Lashoof/Quincey/Smith are too incompetent to survive against a forecheck like Bostons.
Its too bad really, I think the Wings would have beaten the Pens. Fluery basically negates the Pens advantage in D depth and I think Red Wings secondary depth -- if Babcock will let them play instead of fuck around with their chemistry while he continues to jam Abdelkader on the first line for no reason -- would have won out.
LA should merk the Sharks because Niemie sucks. But having Hertl back gives the Sharks 3 lines again, so who knows. Blues are done in 5 unless a miracle happens, no way you can go on a huge losing streak like that and feel confident. Anaheim should destroy Dallas but we're talking about a Bruce Budreau team, that guy must have a pretty awful playoff stat line.
Rangers over Philly because Lundquist > Mason. And Montreal over Tampa because Tampa is playing with their backup and Malone is going to jail.

i don't think Malone is any kind of factor in this series regardless of the outcome of his current troubles.
