usually going after the sex angle is the indicator of a weak game design. Liesure Suit Larry started it all. The game sucks.
it is probably a good way to get your game funded.

My point is that there is a significant group of people who don't want to go back to the age where all women in games were slim with DD's and wore a skin tight "combat suit".
I absolutely don't mind horny teenagers buying those types of game. It's perfectly fine if you want to have that angle.
if you train your customer base to expect it they'll get angry when you remove it. imagine playboy penthouse and hustler with stories rather than naked girls. and the blowback from the customer is up to the publisher/developer to deal with. they created the customer expectations in the first place.
so the people who work on the Tomb Raider games whining that their customers want super sexy Lara Croft are idiots.
The publishers are right there to collect all the money... they can also deal with the negatives they created with their stupid "art".
I'm always curious, Jimmy, what do you consider art, or what's your view on art, because it either seems you have a very specific view of what that entails, or don't have a high esteem of the traditional meaning of the word.
Sometimes video games are art. And, sometimes a publisher makes Liesure SUit Larry.
In a broad sense, just about anything can be art. IMO, Art is important to any culture. Art reflects the culture of the time. So you can watch a 70s TV show or movie and get a perspective on how the world was in that era. The TV show is carefully curated and it is usually not the direct message in the TV Show that gives you hints as to what the culture was like. Its the other stuff going on in the periphery that gives you clues.
For example, after watching a lot of 70s TV and movies I can see that in the 70s people were a lot skinnier and far fewer people were myopic. Generally speaking , the average person was healthier in the 70s.
Have you ever played or seen any game in the Dead or Alive series?
No, I have not.
To the rest of Your post, there is not really much to discuss there for me. I don't really care about "woke" buzz word and I don't really mind politics in games, as long it is properly executed and fits well within the given game. I strongly believe in artistic independence and right to present a certain world view if author(s) wants to. Let the audience decide with their (or their parents) wallets.

There’s nothing stopping anybody making a Morrigan, outside of a vanishingly, vanishingly small minority.
Even people who would like, or are fine with a bit more diversity in major characters, myself included would by and large feel that it makes sense for a character who has a whole plot line triggered by seducing the protagonist to be conventionally attractive

Then we agree. Game companies, artists and authors can do whatever they want. I have no issue with that, especially today with the massive amount of choices there are, there should be something for everyone.
I'm just sick of the "go woke go broke" rethoric in general and wanted to point out there is a large segment of gamers who are normally silent but also don't appreciate sexism in games, as normal adults tend to do.

There is a group of shitty journalists who don't actually know games, and thus have to talk about shit like "This game has a lesbian in a wheelchair!" as if that is the interesting thing about the game. 1 other point. The appeal to triviality is invalid. If it is unimportant then why change it? And then why scrub Akira Toriyama's interview from the internet. The publisher is going to an awful lot of trouble for something trivial.

I do not like how Blizzard changed Kerrigan and Raynor from SC1 to SC2. Check my comments from 13 years ago on here. They drastically changed and 'the community' gave it a pass.

Then publishers are going to have to stop appealing to that group. They won't do that because teenaged males are a core demo for intense action games. It is on the publishers and their non stop thirst for billions in profit.

There is a middle ground between the radicals on each end. One of my favorite games is D2, I've kept playing it on and off for many years. Then the remastered version came out which made significant alterations to the character designs, and there was no reason or explanation given. While this doesn't stop me from playing D2 with the improved graphics, I can't find any reason why these changes were made. There's nothing in the lore that suggests these characters (mainly the physical fighters like the barbarian and the amazon) should look more like they're in their fourties/fifties (as they do now) rather than being in their prime twenties/thirties. It takes out some of the immersion because I expect these heroes to represent the peak of human capability, but also not likely to survive a long journey for several decades. If I'm in my fifties, I won't join a band of heroes to go to war with literal satan. I'll have family to take care of. But if I'm in my twenties and I don't have any children, perhaps I'd be more inclined to fight monsters and devils. My life span will likely be short, but if the cause is worth it, I'll go for it. So it doesn't make sense that most of these heroes now look so much older than they should be. If Blizzard wanted to add more realism for additional immersion, then these heroes who went through many battles should have huge scars, deformations, a missing limb perhaps, and so forth. I'd welcome that artistic direction, it would aid my immersion. There's no such thing, instead they look old. Again, this doesn't stop me from playing the game every so often. I'll keep picking it up around once every two years. I'm just saying the artistic direction is very strange.

Ok for one, gaming demographics are no longer just teenagers horny for some digital tail. It’s still a huge demographic sure
As per the bolded, ludicrous. Male suicide rates being what they are, especially amongst young men (and they’re atypically high in my native land) are a serious problem
They’re nothing to do with a ‘war on boys’ and video games, come on
Some people really haven't gotten over the audience for video games growing past their demographic and that capatalism dictates larger budgets to appeal to larger audiences.

It's somehow not a controversy for video game journalists to attack video game developers for not complying to their female character standard. And how inclusive and new norm this is all happening. And that IGN article isn't the one making these "overblown" drama.
Any gamer would know historically we ALWAYS had sexualised and non sexualised characters and no big publication would attack it for their own political agenda.
And somehow attractive characters are only these for "male" audience. How seriously disconnected this view is when FGO gacha game expanded to 50/50 male and female gamers. Even the thought that only male gamers enjoy sexualised female characters is pretty hardcore sexists. (Theres literal plenty of clothing Collab for Nier automata)
Either way give it a few years and eastern gaming developer picking up, and we will find out what are the big sellers.

Gaming has developed a lot over the years, it’s subject to the same kin d of cultural criticism that say, film is. One doesn’t have to listen to it. Or you can but you don’t have to agree to it it.
It’s not people who dislike x female representation for being too sexualised review bombing games, it’s people annoyed that Aloy has some facial fuzz.
Content complaining about wokeness ruining video games is far more prevalent on the YouTubes of this world than the inverse. Although the latter does exist of course
I personally find it deeply, deeply tiresome but hey people are entitled to their opinions. They’re just not entitled to do the exact same things they get outraged for other people doing.

Is the lack of T&A in video games really the problem? Were talking about a generation which have devices in their pockets that at any given time can give them unlimited 4K HD bazoongas.
The full page christmas special of Lara Croft in PC Gamer was of interest to young me because the fallback was the underwear section of moms mail order catalogue, a scenario that today's horny teenagers likely can't even begin to comprehend. And if they do want digital tail in a game there literally have never been as many games with T&A in as good quality available as there is today.
I know "sky's the limit" when it comes to boobs for a teen but if anything today's they seem like overfeed housecats. There's not enough drive to throw yourself out there only to receive the ball crushing sensation of female rejection, over and over, only slightly softened by your peer groups similar problem, in order to see some tits and touch bush when it's available on the internet. Also seems to be a complete disconnect when it comes to beauty standards. To a normal teen almost any 16/yo girl should be considered hot (granted, almost no one was overweight on either side back in the days). These days all the nerds seem to want the hottest girl in the school or it's no bueno.

I don't. At all. But then I don't follow those influencer groups either so I kinda missed the whole deal until I read it here on TL.net in this thread. Some parts of this discussion are quite interesting, but most seems really overblown. I played the first Horizon game with Aloy and didn't notice anything wrong with her. She was the main character. She was how she was. I played God of War and yes I do expect Kratos to be fucking Bad Ass Kicking character. And he was.
Someone mentioned games are going down the same road as movies/ show and I remembered a while back I was like: Why would they do a female cast of Ghostbusters? Why not make it their own thing and call it "Ghost Hunters" and leave Ghostbuster be Ghostbuster. Crossing streams and everything.
The sexy//ugly woman war going on is hilarious. For me, Sarah Kerrigan in SC1 is the #2 sexiest woman in the history of fiction.

the female road warrior movie called Furiosa did not work. Road Warriors fans have a very specific lore and imagery for which they are looking. As a result, Furiosa lost money despite being a decent movie in the eyes of someone who did not immerse themselves in the first 3 Mad Max Movies. It is very simple and very easy to make money off of Road Warriors fans. George Miller is suffering from what poker players like to call "fancy play syndrome". Had George Miller played his cards in a straightforward manner he wins the hand and makes some decent money. He slow played pocket 9s and got burned trying to play for a huge pot. Furthermore, they market the movie as though I am obligated to see it if I am a "real" Mad Max fan.. get lost George... go make a billion dollars off of someone else.
As a total outsider I enjoyed the story in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. I have zero attachment to Batman, Superman etc. However, most Superman and Batman fans say they hated the story in SS:KTJL. At Whom was SS:KTJL aimed? I'm not paying $60 USD for the game. I have zero emotional investment.
Some guy on here got angry with me when i said that voice acting is not a profession. And, its not. People throughout video games did voicing as a side hobby for decades. VA's have been severely distorting the dialogue of Japanese characters and now Japanese companies are responding be eliminating VAs and using AI. Who can blame them. They are protecting their work.
Now, this is also happening.
These voice generation companies can just find articulate clear speaking students to give them 50 lines. They can then pay the voice people a little bit of cash for permanent perpetual use of their voice in the way James Earl Jones signed away his rights.
Man, the industry is as scummy as your favourite dystopian fiction. Mad Max, 1984, Brave New World... its over for VAs.
