I'm not predicting the same fate for Frost Giant, I'm just saying that I've learned to be skeptical when people, even people I have a lot of confidence in, say they're developing a great new RTS and it's amazing and fun but it's just not quite ready for them to actually show us anything yet.

I get wanting to see the gameplay. Let's maybe not shit on them for not showing it just yet? There's literally more stuff being shown and talked about this weekend. In 2 days. But half the folks in this thread have made up their minds already.

But I keep thinking about the months and years I spent super excited about Artillery and Guardians of Atlas. There, too, we had years of people saying all the right things, and none other than our very own "frisbees not baseballs" Day[9] leading the design. And then the beta came along and it was so bad that the studio immediately shut down. Artillery was mostly making their RTS game to show off their HTML5 engine, which was their real product, if I remember right. They couldn't get the tech right and ended up folding because they just ran out of VC money with no product to show. It wasn't the case that the game was terrible (I played the beta, it was alright) but other factors that led to them shutting down.

Yeah, Artillery announced beta as a last ditch effort to find more funds for the studio. They didn't shut down because the game was bad. They shut down because they were broke. Frost Giant has received at least $30 million in funding so far and they've announced beta will take place around this time next year, which should generate more interest for the game and more funding. Frost Giant has the money to make their vision happen. I can't wait to see what that vision is. Will it revitalize the genre with some new ideas and a better onboarding process for players new to the genre or will it feel like SC2 with a new coat of paint? I'm hoping for the former.

As I understand they want to involve people from the rts community for feedback. which is clever and great to hear.

I'm saying that, from the outside, we again have little more than the words of people whose financial interests are tied to saying publicly that they're making an amazing RTS. I'm going to be thrilled if the thing they're building is awesome. I'm simply reluctant to get all hype about it before they actually provide evidence that they are. That's a fair and reasonable take. We haven't seen anything but some screenshots, an underwhelming reveal trailer, some prototype tech from old interviews, and some fluffy statements from yesterday's interviews. There's very little reason to be hyped beyond their past work on SC2 and them promising to make an awesome RTS. One thing I'm concerned with is whether they'll be able to find their own identity, artistically. I don't have a problem with the "cartoonish" artstyle like some people do, but their visuals are obviously heavily influenced by Blizzard's IPs. They need to find their own artistic identity and separate themselves.

I personally don't know if you can make a BETTER GAME compared to Starcraft but I believe you can make a modern game that gives longterm motivation and social experience to casual players which should be the core of RTS. Esports really doesn't need anything outside of good playability, balance and money. There will always be people who find a game fun and proscene will evolve if those factors are around. Games die if there is no community engagement , no longterm motivation, no social hubs etc. All Monk for example said ticked all my boxes and I loved to hear it. I have HIGH hopes based on what they said - I have no big opinion on the trailer. If I would want to be honest - the small trailer / sequence looked unfinished. I believe they got a spot at summer game fest late but didn't want to leave that opportunity to tease their game. The screenshots are in my opinion simply some units put on a background to see how it could look - not actual gameplay screenshots. I will watch this closely and hope they manage to create what they and in the end we love and appreciate. I am happy to provide feedback and help as much as I can as community member to assist them. - NarutO

No one is calling the developers names or even saying they think the game is going to be bad. Frost Giant hyped this up as a big reveal of the game they've been working on all this time; it's not some little incremental tidbit of information we picked up, it's a reveal that the developers themselves framed as being a big deal. And it's pretty disappointing to then just get a little sort of generic CGI short and three screenshots that don't reveal anything about the actual game. So we're disappointed. Obviously I'm excited for a new Blizzard-style RTS, and I'm excited that Frost Giant keeps saying that's what they're making. And if that's really what it turns out they're making, I'll be very excited to send them my money and play their game. But so far there's not much evidence of what the game is actually going to be like except their marketing communications, and of course I'm not going to trust a company's advertising if they don't back it up with a product demonstration of any kind. 1) you missed the part where all this cinematic was filmed in the game. (it is a unreal engine 5 clip so yeah). 2) I can't tell if trolling but there was no big hype or at least I can't find sources for your claim. 3) the screenshots reveal a lot more, you just need eyes to see 4) it is way too early to have a working version if you would actually know what a product lifecycle is or how development works in general at those scales. also not related to this post but SG is a great acronym for the game. nobody will type stormgate and on a personal note, I already love SG from guitars <3 let's go!

Some things that make me excited: - A new IP, AAA RTS!! (when was the last time that happened?) - Developers helped make the greatest RTS games of all time. They're extremely well-versed in good fundamentals for the genre - Unreal Engine 5 gives a high likelihood for a beautiful, stable, responsive game. It also helps the devs focus on the game itself instead of spending half their time making a new engine. Some things that keep me skeptical: - No gameplay yet, and even when gameplay is revealed there's no guarantee that the final product will be anything like their initial reveal - I'm worried about how they can try to make an RTS for both casual and hardcore players. I'm not even close to being a pro, but I love playing games with near-infinite skill ceilings that always give me something to work on and improve. Higher skill ceilings make for better esports and viewer hype too. - Great talent from previous games doesn't always translate into a great new game (see: Cyberpunk 2077, a game that I was immensely hyped for at release) - Storytelling is an important part of a game to me. I get a sense from the trailer that they're about to tell a story that we've all heard before. "Demons are bad, we should probably stop them." All that said, I'm really looking forward to the deeper reveals =)

To be fair: they explicitly announced that there won‘t be any gameplay during SGF. If people hype the presentation, it‘s not necessarily the developers fault. Maybe - and now I might be guilty of hyping it up nonsensically as well - they planned to show the gameplay on Sunday. Because during SGF, their time slot might have been just for the trailer and a short talk. The show on Sunday might give them more time.

- They ditched Unity as their engine of choice and chose Unreal instead, I know both engines and I don't think Unity is suitable for the constraints of an RTS, this is about game simulation, control and netcode, it should be done in a very specific way that would be cumbersome on Unity. - The style is not completely fantasy based, I would not play something with elves and dragons. - What they are saying about simplifying controls is, in my opinion, a good thing, SC2 is better than Brood War in that regard (even if the game design, mostly the unit mix, is not as good) I am worried about a few other things - I *really* don't like the weird camera angle of the screenshots, I hope this is temporary - They might be rushing to have a beta ready for next year, I think they don't have much yet, this milestone might be too early and hurt the dev process. - I don't like the free2play model, I think this is adding useless constraints to the design

Or Warcraft, could you imagine how many days the mobile game market would've gone without some random wargame jumping on Warcraft if it didn't already exist? About 0. IDK. The name of the game isn't mind blowing, but it doesn't need to be. It's not any worse than Starcraft or DotA. Those games do alright. I really like the point about DotA here. I bet not even a fifth of people who’ve heard of DotA could tell you what that stands for.
