Apple has recently won its proxy war with Google and Andriod through its internatinal legal dispute with Samsung.
But the empire strikes back. And it wants to hit directly home. Google has filed suit directly against Apple in the U.S. International Trade Commission. The claim is that Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch infringe seven of the roughly 17,000 patents Google inherited when it bought Motorola Mobility just over a year ago.
We would like to settle these patent matters," said a spokesperson for Google's Motorola division, "but Apple's unwillingness to work out a license leaves us little choice but to defend ourselves and our engineers' innovations.
The patents in question involve location reminders, e-mail notifications, video playback and Siri, and were deemed serious enough to demand an import ban against nearly every iOS product Apple makes.
The Google comeback has far more dangerous implication than the one won by Apple against Samsung, The infringement is for non-standard essential patents, whoch means that Google filed a case for a patent/patents that courts cannot legally force companies to patent, meaning that if they win this case, Apple could be forced to completely stop using the patent in their devices.
And so begine the "themonuclear war" that Steve Jobs promised. Or should it have been "technonuclear".
Patent law is an amazing thing. I cannot believe apple actually went through with their lawsuit, they had to know something like this was going to happen lol. Basically, this can happen in any industry and it is essentially agreed upon that if the product isnt extremely egregious you don't go after each other.
IBM, Mercedes, etc could go after tons of people, but then were just be countersuits and everyone involved would be in litigation for decades.
wow I thought the whole google bought motorola stuff is just to show Apple that if he starts a war, both will take huge losses and so both side won't do anything. I guess even google didn't see this coming
Whoever at Apple decided that this whole legal thing was a good idea is a complete and utter moron of the highest degree.
Think of all the the things that TV's have in common, red button to remotely switch the tv off, a rectangular shaped remote device to control the tv, a red/green light that indicates the TVs current status... etc etc etc
All of this legal stuff is 100% prime, raw, undiluted BULL SHIT.
This is going to be a fun phase to watch, made me think about john carmacks quote on patents.
"The idea that I can be presented with a problem, set out to logically solve it with the tools at hand, and wind up with a program that could not be legally used because someone else followed the same logical steps some years ago and filed for a patent on it is horrifying."
Well, it's really sad, but then companies need to make money somehow, and r&d is not cheap.
Anyway lets see if google/samsung can get some ground back.
Somehow due to this legal war it feels like apple lost a lot more face. But dont think that affects the less tech savvy crowd.

Ah, part in bold made me burst out laughing. This should be good, hopefully Google wins big. Has their been any new developments? A lot of these articles are a few days old, unless I missed something.
