I don't know anything about law so it doesn't make much sense to me.
You can't ban someone from using a standards essential patent, because that would mean they can't adhere to the standards, which they have to. You can only make them pay you a fair price for using their patents.
For non standards essential patents you don't have to sell them the rights to use it, you can force them to drop the features entirely.

Disliking apple =/= disliking apple products, and although I'm a hardcore PC fan (mainly because they overcharge apple products so fanboys buy them $$$profit$$$) I think anyone who understands the industry should probably dislike Apple and how they play ball.

I understand the industry just fine and Apple's ballgame is perfectly fine.
Also, anyone who thinks Google or Apple going out of business over this is having compatibility issues with reality.

As cool a company people believe Apple to be, I really hope this lawsuit forces them to not exist any more.

So apple sueing companies for making round edged rectangle shaped phones is a reason to hate them, but google suing them for having email notifications, and video playback is good.
Can someone "who understands the industry" explain to me how does that make sense?
PS. For people that did not know, apple did not start anything. Apple has won and lost countless aumonts of patent cases to other companies during the past years. Also apple is not involved in all of these.

I don't think Google would have sued Apple if they didn't launch the thermonuclear war.

It didn't, we have been hinted that Steve Jobs just saw all the rise in competitors that pissed him off. He probably got pissed at Samsung because they completely ripped off Apple's iPhone design and UI etc and added more to it.
Probably when he was dying, he had a dying wish to take down these companies even if it meant to go to a thermonuclear war and Tim Cook could simply just be abiding to his final wish.
I suspect if this was true, and if Apple loses completely, then assassinations will take place afterwards.

well.. here goes the suing war that comes with a badly designed patent system.

Motorola has been suing for as long as Microsoft, Apple, and everybody else. There is no direct motivation for this lawsuit caused by the verdict of Apple vs. Samsung, starting with the fact that the lawsuit started BEFORE the verdict. It's something you are making up to conveniently reinforce your anti-Apple moral high horse, also fueled by the misleading choice of words by the OP.

I think I am going to root for Google on this one because I like Android...also I've never had an Apple device in my life.

hate "rooting" for one side in something like this.
but based on apple vs samsung, i really have some hate for apple's legal team (not their products though)

This is going to be really entertaining. Apple opened up a can of worms with their lawsuit and they have no one but themselves to blame here for this hammer falling. If google is bothering to do so in the first place I imagine they will win, especially with the world-class team they will (or probably already have) assembled.

The idea of patenting ideas.. lol. If you look deep enough, imitation is everywhere. It is a survival necessity.

As far as "high horse Apple disdain" goes, your horse doesn't have to be particularly high to have moral qualms with Apple's business practices. Selling their patents to a patent troll isn't even one of the big ones. I get more worked up over the quality of the Chinese labor and the fact that you eventually encounter child labor down the Apple production line.

Yes, the Samsung has the same UI structure, which is good for the user.
Apple were just the first to enter the market. Smartphones were just mobile phones with lots of additional PC-like hardware. What's the invention there? What's next? I integrate a pair of binoculars into a smartphone. What then? Is that patent-worthy?
