While this thread is labeled "DotA2", this is in fact a community thread first. Many of the users in the TL LoL subforum have been playing as friends for over a year now, so it makes logical sense that they would want to play other games together.
Do not compare DotA2 to LoL, you will get banned.
TL LoL veterans know what is expected. Newcomers be warned.

Disclaimer: If you play DotA / DotA 2 / LoL and want to tell people how much LoL / DotA / DotA 2 sucks, don't post in this thread.
Since most of the regulars and lurkers here value how we treat each other and how it's cool that 2k elo players and 1k elo players manage to work together instead of bashing each other the goal of this initiative is to carry the same spirit over to DotA 2.
The goal of this thread is to organize a LiquidParty for DotA 2 and to have a place for questions like this: -"I love splitpushers/bruisers/AD carries like xyz in LoL, is there something similar in DotA 2?" -"I suck at using TP scrolls because I treat them as Recall/Teleport, what IS the difference in mindset when using them in DotA 2?" -"How should I deal with selling items when? Is something like Bracer / Wraith Band / Null Talisman equivalent to a Dorans Item?" -"How is jungling different in DotA 2 compared to LoL?"
Basicly whenever you see/witness/experience something in DotA and feel like "Well, I managed something similar in LoL before, wtf is the difference here?", this should be the place to ask.
Some basic DotA 2 resources I found helpful: Bumblebee's [DotA] Back to Basics (great intro read) Purgatus DotA 2 for beginners (deals with REALLY basic stuff) Purgatus's Dota 2 Items for Beginners Purgatus's Intermediate Dota 2 For Beginners Purgatus's League of Legends Transition guide (this should be an example as to how we can use this thread best) List of Hero Overviews on Youtube [G] 5-s' 30 second guide to every hero Professor FiercE's youtube channel - the best short educational DotA 2 videos I've seen so far So You Wanna Watch Dota 2 - A Primer for LoL Fans - great thread by scintilliaSD to introduce DotA 2 to League players. [Guide] LoL-styled Smartcasting Dota 2: Ultimate Guide to Warding - a bit excessive but detailed. Could just watch FiercE's video on it if you want the short version
Some cool posts/short discussions from this thread: Yango on jungling in DotA 2 Yango on heroes for people with a LoL background Yango's (not so) brief guide to every item in the game (or just some of them because he's lazy) What are standard lane setups in DotA 2? Yango Pugna Miniguide Yango Furion Miniguide Yango Bloodseeker Miniguide Yango & dna on "What hero should I start playing with?"
Ingame channel: LiquidParty
Get together, drink vodka, marry, make children, do whatever you want. However, please: -Try to be on voice coms (LP.eu Ventrillo / TL Teamspeak) -If you suck at something, try to admit it to yourself and tell others about it. -Try to help out other people who ask you about stuff. -Play games to improve. Winning is cool, but raging because you're not winning 'cause someone didn't pull his weight is not. Treat it like normal games in LoL imoimo.
All basic common sense and a mature attitude. Something most of us miss in both the LoL and also the DotA 2 pubgames. Hell, I'm even missing it in the "teamliquid" channel on DotA. That's why we're here and that's what this is about.
For queues just use common sense. US:E is cool when you have a mix of people, but don't be the US guy who bitches about it when it's 9 Euros you're playing with. Thanks. =P
To add a channel to autojoin: + Show Spoiler +1) go to your DotA 2 cfg directory (should be something like: \steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\dota\cfg 2) add a file called "autoexec.cfg" 3) add the line: chat_join "LiquidParty" in there IF THIS FAILS TRY THIS: 1) open config.cfg 2) find the parameter "dota_camera_speed" 3) change the area around it to something like this: dota_camera_speed "5000" dota_custom_channels "teamliquid;LiquidParty;" dota_gamescom_althack "0" Seems like the last patch broke the autojoin stuff in the autoexec.cfg for whatever reason. qq.

I have to check but since I'm using a friend's Steam account for DotA 2 (I never got a beta invite myself ) my ingame name is something weird that I can't remember that's not WaveofShadow. Think it's Killiani. I'll update later.

If I ever get a hold of a key to play DOTA 2, I'd glady give it a try with you guys!
|
I probably won't start playign Dota 2 till actual release, and even then I don't know if I would want to play it over LoL, but I'll definitely try it out. Tbh I sorta burned out in Dota back in middleschool and highschool.

I guess I'm a DotA2 player now, steamID is dnastyx
|
I need a betakey...... D: If I do get it I'd love to play with you guys though!

DotA 2 won't be officially 'released' for a long time since they're only releasing heroes every so often and still have quite a while before they catch up to the DotA release heroes. I believe they have said they won't be releasing DotA 2 until they've caught up.

No DotA 2 beta key so I won't be playing. Even after game comes out prob still won't play because I'll have to buy it. Why buy when theres just as good alternatives for free.
Btw why is there a thread in the LoL GD about getting people together to play DotA2? That's just as bad as posting a thread in the BW GD about getting people to play SC2, that thread would be closed in a day because of the animosity. Which is just as bad between LoL players and DotA 2 players imo.

Which is just as bad between LoL players and DotA 2 players imo. I can't speak about the other groups on TL, but we're pretty open-minded here in the LoL Subforum. We don't hate other games. Why would we?
Anyway, this is just so TL LoL'ers can find other LoL'ers who play DotA cause we like to troll each other play with each other. It's also so LoL'ers who want to get into DotA have a place to ask other LoL'ers who know both games well about how to transition and get LoL analogies to DotA.
Our local Forum Banling said it was fine. Also, I can't imagine a similar thread being terribly friendly in the DotA subforum (although I could always be proven wrong).

The only people who would have a problem with this are people like Zooper31. No one asked if you were going to play DoTA2; no one cares that you don't have a beta key.
Thanks for giving your unsolicited opinion, but we just want to play DotA2 together because a lot of us played LoL together.

You could just link your profile if you're cool with that. (To find it, log into steam via browser and click on your profile somewhere. Should spit out a link with a long number that you can copy.)
@dna/zoop: Added another disclaimer in the OP, there's no point in discussing if this thread has a purpose or not if people use it respectfully and with the intended purpose which Moonbear (no I'm not trying to spell that name unless I quote you) pointed out quite eloquently.

I'd like to get in on this. I don't play much, but it's fun when I need a break from soloQ terror.
Steam ID is Soniv

okay i minus whale start off with a question about dota 2 since hopefully you guys have played it more than i have
i have a dota2 key. i've played about 3 games. i was an avid dota player. i remember dota in the wc3 engine was definitely not as smooth running as LoL. but in LoL i get 60 fps on low settings and the game runs without a hitch. in dota 2 it feels EXTREMELY clunky compared to LoL. like to the point that i don't even want to play because i can't last hit or anything. is that just me not used to the archaic wc3 feel again, or has dota 2 not been graphically optimized for slower computers or something? if there's a way to make it run more properly on my pc, i'd like to do that before i dive in and spend some time on it.
that being said, the thing i've yearned for in LoL ever since i hit level 10 or so and had finally seen most of the champs in the game, is storm spirit. i love his mobility and just his entire playstyle. REALLY wish they'd kept him as a panda instead of that fat mexican or whatever he is now. so hopping back into dota 2 - what a really simple pubby build i can do on storm spirit that will make me fly around the map and have all the fun?
and lastly, i haven't played dota since the ice apparition was added (and i don't remember all of the old champs either!). is there anything that compared to riven in dota? really love playing riven, would like to try something similar
edit: also, it turns out my steam name is "guitarasaurus" not "gtrsrs" if you want to update that. and i don't know how to copy my steam profile but if you tell me how i will do so!
|
yay for the TL LoL subforum community. We should have like a dota sub-subforum here - it would probably turn out to be better than the original DOTA subforum
|
@anmol: That quote makes your post boss.
@guitar: Added you and changed the OP to tell people where to find that stuff.

The newest version added a render quality option, which gives you way more room with regard to turning down the settings so that the game runs better. Turning it all the way to the bottom makes the game pretty much unplayable though, so you have to fiddle with it a bit.

Skill Order: There are two ways of doing this. One is the "standard" way, and one is a quirky build that 430 (probably the best Chinese solo mid player) does. Try both and see which one you like better: (I assume you are using QWER keys) Standard - QEWWWR, R>Q>W>E 430's - QEEWWR, R>W>Q>E
The common point of both skill orders is getting Q and E first (as W is pretty useless at low ranks in lane). Your primary mode of harassment in lane is Q to clear creeps, followed by an E-charged autoattack on the enemy. 3 points of W are then taken because with 3 points, your W pulls enemies all the way into your Q. 430 gets the extra point of E for stronger lane control and maxes W first for longer CC, while the standard build maxes Q before finishing off W for stronger burst damage and farming power.
Item Builds: Regardless of which build you take, your general early game items are going to be Bottle->Treads->Magic Wand. Bottle lets you take runes for ganking/lane sustain, and is pretty much essential with your mana demands. Treads are a cost-effective DPS increase that scale well for you lategame, while also giving you stat-swapping utility through midgame. Wand just gives you the opportunity to hold onto a free 150 HP/150 mana restore, which is absolutely huge for Storm.
After this core, there are two possible routes of item development: The safe way - Sheepstick->BKB->other defensive/utility shit (Shiva's, Linken's, etc.). This corresponds to the 2 Mantles start--you generally build one of them into Null Talisman (and sometimes the second one if you're having a dry midgame) in order to fill the gold gap while you're saving for Sheepstick. This build basically just opts for the two best teamfighting items for Storm as quickly as possible. You get survivability early, and don't skip out on too much damage. Note: the safest Sheepstick component to buy first is the Ultimate Orb. 9 times out of 10, you should buy the Ultimate Orb first, and finish Sheepstick after you have 3600 in one go.
The showy way - Orchid Malevolence->Sheepstick->BKB->other defensive shit. You only get 1 mantle to start if you plan on doing this because Oblivion Staves are easy to build--they cost ~1600 gold and build from small, easy-to-buy components. Usually you won't need to finish a Null Talisman, but you still can. This build has worse teamfighting, because you delay your teamfighting utility items. What it gains is strong midgame solo-killing and ganking power. Oblivion Staves give you a cost-effective buildup, and Orchid enhances your burst damage and mana sustainability considerably.
There's also the option of just going straight BKB if you really need to, but I don't think it's generally necessary in pubs.
Also, I'm going to shoot myself if they make Pandaren Brewmaster a fat guy that splits into 3 other fat guys.

It doesn't help that the first two heroes I can think of are two heroes that aren't actually in DotA 2 yet (Chaos Knight and Ember Spirit).
@r.Evo, my Steam Name is the same as my TL account name.
