C2D E6600 GT 520 2GB Ram Some motherboard (not sure which, school computer, sorry) 350W PSU (Again not sure, but I haven't had any issues with it in the month I've had the comp) Edit: or maybe the hard drive. But that seems unlikely, and its not where the sound is coming from. It lasts for ~30 seconds or so, sometimes more, sometimes less.

I hope your stream makes you money because you are around $100 invested into it. 4:3 streams are pretty unpopular so I wish you luck.

Considering he's planning on replacing the video card, and the thing still needs a hard drive, buying that was a dumb decision. Essentially he just spent $550 on a used CPU, mobo, RAM, and PSU. Given that it's prebuilt, the motherboard is likely a specially made deal; likely comparitively slow and probably doesn't have much in the way of expansion slots. PSU probably doesn't have any free connectors either. I'd also be concerned about the cooling on that thing if you put a high end card in it. Hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like the only fan is one 120mm in the back....

I'm somewhat wary of messing with it too much since its not mine, and I technically only asked a teacher for permission (not sure if that's "high up" enough in the school's mind if I break it). I added in the GT 520 Edit: Anything particular you would recommend doing first?

Caps are important here. Scientific Method is the ultimate creed in computer diagnosis and repair.

Correct solution is to sacrifice a virgin goat with a toad tied around it's neck to a volcano under a full moon. That and communing with the spirits of the dead. Science is TOTALLY overrated. I want a degree in Computer Theology. But no, seriously, he's right. And even if something you're told to do doesn't work, it's not always because you were given bad advice, they could just be working their way through a process of elimination. Too many people expect some bizarre guaranteed fix to all PC problems. 99% of the time, it's a combination of a little bit of basic knowledge, prioritizing some guesswork, and finding tests to isolate the components behind those guesses until the issue is found.

I hope we never get to that point. Where technology is so advanced a minor bump in civilization causes knowledge to be lost forever.

Sometimes when my PC doesn't work, I pray to the machine god and it is magically fixed. True story. I used to have one that threats worked on, after the fifth or sixth time I kicked it because the HDD and optical were both pieces of shit that only worked half the time. Granted, it stopped working completely a couple of months later (I blame the gremlins, obviously). At that point, I reminded it why it had always feared me by throwing it off a second floor balcony. Alcohol and PCs don't always mix. NOTE: Physical violence is BAD for PCs. I just didn't care at that point. Attempt this method at your own risk.
