Thanks for the quick reply. Couldn't pass up getting the i5 and the mobo for $200 total...
Just purchased the Samsung before reading this (I saw you had recommended it in a couple other posts!)
I'm going with the GSkill 8g Ripsaw that's on sale currently and was thinking about the Rosewell Challenger + Show Spoiler +http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147153
As far as the modular psu goes do you think its worth the extra price? I'd be just as happy with a cheaper PSU as I'm trying to cut as many corners as I can atm. I just don't want to have to deal with a huge amount of cable management.(College Grad = not a lot of money)
(Again first build from scratch so I'm not 100% sure on what to get. I've upgraded prebuilt models many times but I never had to pair up ever piece like this. Truly appreciate the help!!)

hey guys, so an unexpected problem came up, and I won't be able to finish my build. The unfortunate part is that I bought most of my parts already, but I'll have to buy the parts I haven't bought later (cpu and psu). So far, these are what I bought:
mobo: BIOSTAR H61MGC LGA 1155 Intel H61 ($40 after rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138332
memory: Kingston 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) ($15) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139046&cm_mmc=BF2011_listing-_-147-_-N82E16820139046&nm_mc=BF2011_listing
hdd: HITACHI HDS721050CLA362 (0F10381) 500GB 7200 RPM ($50 w/ promo code) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145299&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL112511&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL112511-_-EMC-112511-Index-_-InternalHardDrives-_-22145299-L012A
case: COOLER MASTER Elite 430 ($25 after rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119227&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL112511&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL112511-_-EMC-112511-Index-_-ComputerCases-_-11119227-L012C
Like I have said, due to my financial situation (poor college student whose paycheck is being delayed), I won't be able to get the $30 psu and g530 ($52) until a month or two later. So I figured if I'm going to wait, why not wait for the ivy bridge cpu and maybe get an i3 or even an i5 ivy bridge? But the mobo is my main concern. Although I got it for a beast of a deal, I'm not sure if I should keep it or return it. The same goes for the other parts I bought. What should I do? Should I keep all the parts, keep some and return some, or return all of them?
oh yeah, i already have a gpu

If you're trying to cut down on costs than you should get an even less expensive case than the Rosewill Challenger at $50 such as the Bitfenix Outlaw at $40: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63255&promoid=1055
It's usually not worth it for most people to get a modular power supply. There's not much cables to deal with in these low-end configurations anyways, you'll just be left hiding a strand of SATA and maybe a strand of molex. You should probably just pick up this OCZ ZS 650 for $75 ($50 after mail in rebate) that comes with a DVD burner as well.

I would return the motherboard but you can keep the rest if you want.

I'm guessing there won't be a new type of memory (ie ddr4?idklol) on the new mobos?

Don't expect DDR4 until Rockwell or Skylake.

Who knows, you might just set your motherboard on fire à la MSI motherboards and Thuban.
|
Well i was hoping someone knew <_<

Maybe overclock the 2-module to 4.6 GHz, but the 4-module ones? Unless they're using really beefy MOSFETs, good luck with that on a 4+1 phase design.
edit: possibly with like NH-C14 blowing down to cool them, maybe...?
|
FX4100 is supposed to easily overclock to 4.6 Ghz on stock cooling
|
Oh sorry, I read "all Bulldozers" but not the FX-4100 part in a different post above that.

They overclock well but are very unstable in gaming. When I say "who knows" I mean no one knows what's going on. Its literally Phenom I all over again.
Edit: You can get to 5Ghz with some difficulty (like 1.47V) but if you're planning to get a FX build, I still wouldn't. No one knows what the hell is happening with Bulldozer. Currently, they have problems dealing with multiprocessing (or some other stuff too, who knows), which leads to annoying BSODs. AMD knows about this and tells you to update your BIOS...some will fix this issue but also drag performance down to an unacceptable amount. In other cases, newer BIOSes will break compatibility with some games.
|
Oh I'm not planning on getting one, but I just want to know this for the sake of knowing it .-. Also it might be a viable alternative to some cheaper sandybridges for some people in some situations so it's useful to know.
How about the problem with Bulldozer where it couldn't play like 20 different steam games? Has it been fixed? If it can't even start those games it being marketed as a gaming processor is just..
|
fx 4100 isn't useful for anything. it's slower than a a8-3850 in many cases.
|
When overclocked to 4.6 Ghz? I have trouble believing that
|
Pretty sure a 4.6GHz FX4100 would lose to a 4GHz Phenom II... in everything.

Would the intel 320 series SSDs be worth getting for a laptop then reusing for an ivy bridge build in April? Around $1/GB is excellent, but I'm on the edge because it's SATA II and something better/better prices may come around in 5 months. I've tried to google around for info, but there's not much about ssd price predictions (of course), but I'm not sure if it's worth picking this up now over something else when I build a desktop. I'm having trouble pulling the trigger
|
I know a lot of people who ordered Intel 320 but I'm having trouble pulling the trigger as well =p Getting AMEX instead of prepaid cheque is really putting me off from the deal.
