You want the i5-2500k to be able to overclock (I'm assuming you're doing so, or else you wouldn't get that motherboard or cooler). newegg actually seems out? Intel i5-2500k - $215 http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=57962&promoid=1368 Antec TruePower New 550W (better than the Earthwatts Green) - $60 http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=36262&promoid=1055 AsRock Z68 Pro3 (better motherboard for overclocking, also has USB3) - $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157251 The HD 6950 is out of stock, so not much of a decision there. But I'd consider the EVGA -AR model (lifetime warranty with registration) or MSI Twin Frozr II (maybe best heatsink/fan) for $240 instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130610 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127594

FX 4100 will require some more expensive hardware to work well which is probably enough for you to swing for a i5 2400. On November 26 2011 14:13 Molybdenum wrote: Would the intel 320 series SSDs be worth getting for a laptop then reusing for an ivy bridge build in April? Around $1/GB is excellent, but I'm on the edge because it's SATA II and something better/better prices may come around in 5 months. I've tried to google around for info, but there's not much about ssd price predictions (of course), but I'm not sure if it's worth picking this up now over something else when I build a desktop. I'm having trouble pulling the trigger Prices will only go down. If you want a SSD now, I'd buy an SSD right now. The one thing I really, really, really hate about Anandtech is their obsession with benchmarks. Benchmarks do matter but they are only isolated cases. Its like the bitching about the Macbook Air and Toshiba and Samsung SSDs. Yes the Toshiba SSD is shit but it still does the main thing a SSD does well - fast random reads - and you realistically won't notice a real difference.

Thank you for taking the time to help me refine my build. I'm a gamer and would like to drop $1,500 on a decent system to play Skyrim, SC2, D3 (when it arrives), & etc. on Ultra, if possible. Find specs below. Budget: $1500 Resolution: ?? Highest possible, I suppose. Planned Use: Gaming/coding. Upgrade Cycle: 3+ years. Plan on building it now, or as close to now as possible. Yes to overclocking. No, do not need an OS (although I know I need to run 64 bit Windows Vista Home [whatever]). I'd like the option of a second video card, but I do not plan to use one initially. I plan to buy from either Newegg or Amazon--whichever is cheapest. CPU: I'm pretty set on the i-7 2600k CPU: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004EBUXSA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER Motherboard: This looks decent, but I'm not sure if it's optimal: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00518M74I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER Memory: ?? Random (ha) $60 memory? Videocard: Again, not sure: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004EYSMGW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER HD: ?? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 Power Supply: ?? Would like to go as expensive as possible here. Case: ? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042 Optical Drive: ?? Whatever works, right? My understanding is that this is a pretty standard choice regardless of build. Well, thank you for your time! I would greatly appreciate any and all advice/assistance you're able to offer.

So far, I have: - 23" Samsung Monitor with 1920x1080 resolution (hooray online deals) - Updated 1 TB hard disk drive - 650W Power Supply - Either a GeForce GTX 550 Ti or it's highly comparable GTX 460 (my friend can hook me up with either) That leaves me worrying about mainly the core components of the computer (CPU, RAM, and motherboard). What sort of Intel CPU/motherboards would some of you recommend to cost-effectively match what I already have? I'll definitely want DDR3 memory slots and a mid-tier processor that's less than $200. RAM shouldn't be a problem since it's the cheapest out of the three. Not a big deal, but why do people buy new CD readers/burners? I was just going to take the one from my old computer and use it. But I don't mind throwing down $15 for a new one either. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Are you going to be overclocking or not? Doing a multi-GPU configuration suggests that you will be. If that's the case, you would want a core i5 2500k ($200), some Z68 or P67 motherboard such as the Asrock Z68 Extreme3 ($125), and 2x4gb 1600MHz cas9 ($30). People buy new optical drives because they're new to building and don't want to use the existing one in their current computer or their old one is IDE instead of SATA.

There's not much cables to deal with in these low-end configurations anyways, you'll just be left hiding a strand of SATA and maybe a strand of molex. You should probably just pick up this OCZ ZS 650 for $75 ($50 after mail in rebate) that comes with a DVD burner as well. Thanks for helping out. Two last questions: Any recommendations for a heatsink? or anything I should look for? Is it completely unnecessary? I'm trying to figure out what type of 560 to get as well but will figure that out in the weeks to come. With everything else on sale I figure I can run integrated for a week or so until I can decide.

I'm absolutely not doing any sort of SLI, overclocking, or multi-GPUs. I'm getting a GTX 550 Ti or a GTX 460, not both. Sorry if my post was misleading. The 650W was bought very cheaply off of a friend and the monitor was an unexpected Black Friday gift. I'm simply building a cost-efficient computer that can capably run something like Skyrim and Battlefield 3 on medium without any noticeable FPS lag or sub-standard graphics. Of course, there's going to be FPS lag while playing on servers, I just don't want my GPU to be causing any.

GTX 550 Ti shouldn't even be considered.

Q9550 (May or may not be broken, no mobo to test it on. Old mobo has a steady amber light when turned on. Other mobo (same socket, but confirmed NOT to run the q9550) has a steady amber light aswell (but on the power button) when this CPU is in. Not sure if that'ts because of the CPU being fucked, or the mobo not being able to take it! GTS 250 1gb 4 x 1 GB DDR2 RAM (Will buy new RAM if I have to) 350 watt power supply I don't plan on SLI-ing anytime in the future, and probably won't ever. Most Graphic or CPU intensive thing I will be running would be FFXIV. I'd like a minimum of 4 USB ports. Have 2 monitors, not sure which I will use for it (1280x1024 & 1680x1050). I would like to be able to overclock both my CPU and GPU (as they're both decently outdated now).

If anyone has any thoughts or experiences on models that would be compatible and price performance oriented I would appreciate it. Looking to spend like $30 max. Was looking at http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX28430 as it's an asus model like the router and probably 100% compatible.

I'd just go for an usb, they're cheaper and are less troublesome to set up. I use a usb for my wireless, but I'm not really an expert.

I guess i'll search the webs for reviews. I was under the impression pci would kick the teeth in on a USB wireless adapter. Can anyone knowledgeable lend some information? I'm guessing transfer speed / transmission quality (? like signal strength or reliability?) is what I should be looking for in reviews; but I'm not particularly sure what the "standard" is with wireless technology.

Do I need the cpu cooler if I'm not going to overclock? Also if I'm not overclocking, is it better to have 2500K or just 2500. I'm not buying all of the parts ASAP, so if something is out of stock I could wait. The 1gb hd 6950 is out of stock, but I could buy the 2gb sapphire radeon hd 6950. Still, is HD 6950 better or is GTX 560 ti better? Thanks for the quick response.

get this ram instead microcenter should have 2500k for a decent price afaik btw that mobo is a bad choice imo, rather go with asrock Z68 pro3 for 100$, better and cheaper On November 27 2011 00:27 FreddieY wrote: If I don't necessarily want to overclock, what motherboard should I get? If you want usb3 and sata6 you should go with the asrock usb3 h61 mobo. You don't need a cpu cooler if you won't overclock Should rather go with GTX 560 Ti in my opinion. 2GB 6950 is a waste of money if you're not crossfiring.
