Could just get Corsair Force GT as it's pretty much capped by SATA3, at least don't need to worry about newer SSDs surpassing it by too much =)

Problems are it costs alot and its sandforce though..

@FreddieY:

You want the i5-2500k to be able to overclock (I'm assuming you're doing so, or else you wouldn't get that motherboard or cooler).

newegg actually seems out?

Intel i5-2500k - $215
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=57962&promoid=1368

Antec TruePower New 550W (better than the Earthwatts Green) - $60
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=36262&promoid=1055

AsRock Z68 Pro3 (better motherboard for overclocking, also has USB3) - $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157251

The HD 6950 is out of stock, so not much of a decision there. But I'd consider the EVGA -AR model (lifetime warranty with registration) or MSI Twin Frozr II (maybe best heatsink/fan) for $240 instead:

The advantage of Sandy Bridge is the performance is "just right", it can pretty much use any cheap motherboard and work properly, and power draw is low enough that low end PSUs will work perfectly fine.

FX 4100 will require some more expensive hardware to work well which is probably enough for you to swing for a i5 2400.

Would the intel 320 series SSDs be worth getting for a laptop then reusing for an ivy bridge build in April? Around $1/GB is excellent, but I'm on the edge because it's SATA II and something better/better prices may come around in 5 months. I've tried to google around for info, but there's not much about ssd price predictions (of course), but I'm not sure if it's worth picking this up now over something else when I build a desktop. I'm having trouble pulling the trigger

Prices will only go down. If you want a SSD now, I'd buy an SSD right now.

The one thing I really, really, really hate about Anandtech is their obsession with benchmarks. Benchmarks do matter but they are only isolated cases. Its like the bitching about the Macbook Air and Toshiba and Samsung SSDs. Yes the Toshiba SSD is shit but it still does the main thing a SSD does well - fast random reads - and you realistically won't notice a real difference.

I'm not sure why you would buy a FX4100 when a Phenom II X4 is available for same price... a quad core vs a dual core with lower IPC.

Hello! Build advice, please?

Thank you for taking the time to help me refine my build. I'm a gamer and would like to drop $1,500 on a decent system to play Skyrim, SC2, D3 (when it arrives), & etc. on Ultra, if possible. Find specs below.

Budget: $1500

Resolution: ?? Highest possible, I suppose.

Planned Use: Gaming/coding.

Upgrade Cycle: 3+ years.

Plan on building it now, or as close to now as possible.

Yes to overclocking.

No, do not need an OS (although I know I need to run 64 bit Windows Vista Home [whatever]).

I'd like the option of a second video card, but I do not plan to use one initially.

I plan to buy from either Newegg or Amazon--whichever is cheapest.

CPU: I'm pretty set on the i-7 2600k CPU: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004EBUXSA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Motherboard: This looks decent, but I'm not sure if it's optimal: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00518M74I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Memory: ?? Random (ha) $60 memory?

Videocard: Again, not sure: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004EYSMGW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

HD: ?? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185

Power Supply: ?? Would like to go as expensive as possible here.

Case: ? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042

Optical Drive: ?? Whatever works, right? My understanding is that this is a pretty standard choice regardless of build.

Well, thank you for your time! I would greatly appreciate any and all advice/assistance you're able to offer.

I'm looking to build a new computer based on a mixture of hardware I've managed to get my hands on in the past few months.

So far, I have:

- 23" Samsung Monitor with 1920x1080 resolution (hooray online deals)
- Updated 1 TB hard disk drive
- 650W Power Supply
- Either a GeForce GTX 550 Ti or it's highly comparable GTX 460 (my friend can hook me up with either)

That leaves me worrying about mainly the core components of the computer (CPU, RAM, and motherboard). What sort of Intel CPU/motherboards would some of you recommend to cost-effectively match what I already have? I'll definitely want DDR3 memory slots and a mid-tier processor that's less than $200. RAM shouldn't be a problem since it's the cheapest out of the three.

Not a big deal, but why do people buy new CD readers/burners? I was just going to take the one from my old computer and use it. But I don't mind throwing down $15 for a new one either.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Oh, get a job? Just get a job? Why don't I strap on my job helmet, squeeze down into a job cannon, and fire off into job land, where jobs grow on jobbies!

Are you going to be doing SLI or not? The 650w power supply suggests that you will be.

Are you going to be overclocking or not? Doing a multi-GPU configuration suggests that you will be.

If that's the case, you would want a core i5 2500k ($200), some Z68 or P67 motherboard such as the Asrock Z68 Extreme3 ($125), and 2x4gb 1600MHz cas9 ($30).

People buy new optical drives because they're new to building and don't want to use the existing one in their current computer or their old one is IDE instead of SATA.

Here's my current build. I was going to wait a bit but Micro Center had a great deal today so I picked up the MoBo/i5 today

Processor-Intel i5 2500k
Motherboard- AsRock Z68 Pro3-M
Memory- w/e 8g 1600
Case-??
Power Supply-corsair/seasonic modular
HD-??
Video Card-GeForce GTX 560 Ti (evga/msi)
DVD Drive- w/e

Any recommendations as to what power supply? I guess the biggest thing I don't know much about are SSDs. I have a 1TB external and a few other internals so I can get away with a much smaller SSD than I would normally want. Any good recommendations for 80-120 GB SSDs that aren't completely outrageously priced?

Also how will the MoBo be? I did a bit of research but this is my first build from scratch.

Motherboard is decent.

Samsung 830 64gb for $95 is a good deal: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147502

Intel 320 80gb is also a good deal if you want to deal with mail in rebates, $160 ($80 after mail in rebate) with $10 gift card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167048 There's also the 120gb variant: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167050

If you're looking for a modular power supply, I guess you're looking at a Seasonic X750 for $110: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151087 or a X660 for $100: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=65390&promoid=105 Being a $10 difference, you might as well just get the X750. If you're looking for something less expensive that's semi modular than the Antec Truepower New 550 (Seasonic manufactured) for $60 (there's a lot of cables attached to it for being a semi modular unit): http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=36262&promoid=1055

Coolermaster 690ii Advanced for $69 ($49 after mail in rebate) is a good option for a case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119216

Thanks for the quick reply. Couldn't pass up getting the i5 and the mobo for $200 total...

Just purchased the Samsung before reading this (I saw you had recommended it in a couple other posts!)

I'm going with the GSkill 8g Ripsaw that's on sale currently and was thinking about the Rosewell Challenger + Show Spoiler +
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147153

As far as the modular psu goes do you think its worth the extra price? I'd be just as happy with a cheaper PSU as I'm trying to cut as many corners as I can atm. I just don't want to have to deal with a huge amount of cable management.(College Grad = not a lot of money)

(Again first build from scratch so I'm not 100% sure on what to get. I've upgraded prebuilt models many times but I never had to pair up ever piece like this. Truly appreciate the help!!)

If you're trying to cut down on costs than you should get an even less expensive case than the Rosewill Challenger at $50 such as the Bitfenix Outlaw at $40: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63255&promoid=1055

It's usually not worth it for most people to get a modular power supply. There's not much cables to deal with in these low-end configurations anyways, you'll just be left hiding a strand of SATA and maybe a strand of molex. You should probably just pick up this OCZ ZS 650 for $75 ($50 after mail in rebate) that comes with a DVD burner as well.

Thanks for helping out. Two last questions: Any recommendations for a heatsink? or anything I should look for? Is it completely unnecessary? I'm trying to figure out what type of 560 to get as well but will figure that out in the weeks to come. With everything else on sale I figure I can run integrated for a week or so until I can decide.
I have a question...

I'm absolutely not doing any sort of SLI, overclocking, or multi-GPUs. I'm getting a GTX 550 Ti or a GTX 460, not both. Sorry if my post was misleading. The 650W was bought very cheaply off of a friend and the monitor was an unexpected Black Friday gift.

I'm simply building a cost-efficient computer that can capably run something like Skyrim and Battlefield 3 on medium without any noticeable FPS lag or sub-standard graphics. Of course, there's going to be FPS lag while playing on servers, I just don't want my GPU to be causing any.

The GTX 460 is much better than a GTX 550 Ti. GTX 550 Ti shouldn't even be considered.

Other mobo (same socket, but confirmed NOT to run the q9550) has a steady amber light aswell (but on the power button) when this CPU is in. Not sure if that'ts because of the CPU being fucked, or the mobo not being able to take it!
GTS 250 1gb
4 x 1 GB DDR2 RAM (Will buy new RAM if I have to)
350 watt power supply

I don't plan on SLI-ing anytime in the future, and probably won't ever.
Most Graphic or CPU intensive thing I will be running would be FFXIV.
I'd like a minimum of 4 USB ports.

Have 2 monitors, not sure which I will use for it (1280x1024 & 1680x1050).
I would like to be able to overclock both my CPU and GPU (as they're both decently outdated now).

So i'm a complete wireless noob. Built a friend a rig today with some pretty great black friday deals. Hell he even got a Razer marauder for $60. Anyways, he's currently forced to use wireless and has a Asus RT-N10 router (kind of weird, they replaced a decent linksys router with this model a few months ago). Down to the point, i'm looking for a moderately good wireless adapter. I'm not sure what to go for, USB or PCI. I'm assuming pci will generally be better in most cases (USB is probably for laptops with limited wireless capability?). Anyways, we plan on picking one up from http://www.memoryexpress.com/Category/NetworkAdapters tomorrow morning. I have no experience in wireless as I absolutely despise it.

If anyone has any thoughts or experiences on models that would be compatible and price performance oriented I would appreciate it. Looking to spend like $30 max. Was looking at http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX28430 as it's an asus model like the router and probably 100% compatible.

Razer marauder for 60$ is somehow a good deal? Really seems like a complete ripoff to me.

I'd just go for an usb, they're cheaper and are less troublesome to set up. I use a usb for my wireless, but I'm not really an expert.

Considering it's MSRP is $120, and it's one of the few keyboards that has very very versatile LED colors (atleast 5 or 6 shades of each color of the rainbow). He doesnt want a mech keyboard. plus it's also got a compact layout without skimping on shift/enter keys. happened to look and saw the keyboard $60 off. Great pickup IMO considering he cant really use a mech keyboard as he would inevitably wake someone up far too often, it's pretty hard for someone who doesnt type on a mech to not bottom out.

I guess i'll search the webs for reviews. I was under the impression pci would kick the teeth in on a USB wireless adapter. Can anyone knowledgeable lend some information? I'm guessing transfer speed / transmission quality (? like signal strength or reliability?) is what I should be looking for in reviews; but I'm not particularly sure what the "standard" is with wireless technology.

Well yeah, Marauder is a very good choice if the thing you most value in keyboards is LED lightning in all shades of the rainbow.

Also blacks and reds are more quiet than rubber domes but ok

You want the i5-2500k to be able to overclock (I'm assuming you're doing so, or else you wouldn't get that motherboard or cooler).

newegg actually seems out?

Intel i5-2500k - $215

If I don't necessarily want to overclock, what motherboard should I get? Do I need the cpu cooler if I'm not going to overclock?
Also if I'm not overclocking, is it better to have 2500K or just 2500. I'm not buying all of the parts ASAP, so if something is out of stock I could wait. The 1gb hd 6950 is out of stock, but I could buy the 2gb sapphire radeon hd 6950. Still, is HD 6950 better or is GTX 560 ti better?

Thanks for the quick response.

I am upgrading my new computer and this is what I have currently.

GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

MSI N560GTX Twin Frozr II/OC GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623I52500K

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

The problem is the Ram and Processor just went out of stock. Any idea where I could get these parts for the same price?

get this ram instead

microcenter should have 2500k for a decent price afaik

btw that mobo is a bad choice imo, rather go with asrock Z68 pro3 for 100$, better and cheaper

Then you should get a locked, cheaper processor like i5 2400 or i5 2500 along with a H61 motherboard. If you want usb3 and sata6 you should go with the asrock usb3 h61 mobo. You don't need a cpu cooler if you won't overclock

Should rather go with GTX 560 Ti in my opinion. 2GB 6950 is a waste of money if you're not crossfiring.

Could you tell me why to get that ram instead of the other one and why is the mobo a bad choice? Can the asrock SLI?
