The negative consequences where someone hacks into his account to both read it and announce it to the world? I mean, given that she had his info, it's not very often someone who ends up in a discussion among friends finds out -- regardless of the content.
And there is no negative consequences because the only people who would give a fuck are him, the girl that found out, and maybe some close friends/family members who might judge him. He isn't at the mercy of entitled netizens who think they're the only ones able to determine whether or not he can be on a team.

I would imagine it is a pejorative term for people who go on the likes of reddit and demand action over someone for their perceived moral failings, often (in my view) out of proportion with the original offence. In essence a proportion of the people who mailed sponsors in this case, off whatever that subreddit was.
