TL.net ESPORTS 4 Posts February 10 2025 09:03 GMT #1 2024-25 Off-season Community Weekly Cups Week of Feb 3 - Feb 9 by Wax The first week of February was especially active for the SC2 scene, with the usual trio of cups joined by an extra-large Olimoleague Winter Finals and the February edition of uThermal's 2v2 circuit. Overall, Clem was the top dog yet again, winning three competitions on the week—including the ~$2000 Olimoleague first place prize. *Partial brackets may be shown. Feb 3: WardiTV Mondays #21 The week began with what can only be called "a normal day in SC2," with Clem and MaxPax colliding in the finals of WardiTV Mondays (their 190th competitive clash at that point). This round in the never-ending heavyweight match went to Clem, who took a 3-2 victory in a finals packed with straight-up macro games (VOD). While trigger was stopped in the RO4 by MaxPax, his performance warrants a shoutout as he did break up the MaxPax-Clem-herO hegemony by bouncing herO from the bracket in the RO8. ***** Feb 3: Monday Night Weeklies #3 Our new EPT EU Cup timeslot tournament, the Monday Night Weeklies, continued to march forward with its third competition. Once again, Clem clinched first place with a 3-2 win over a top Protoss player, only this time MaxPax was subbed out for herO (VOD). The dramatic finals saw herO fall into a 0-2 hole initially, with his proxy-Oracles backfiring in game one while Clem's 2-base push proved to be too strong in game two. However, herO fought back to tie the series with strong macro play, and had momentum at his back heading into the all-deciding game five. herO came close to winning by containing and out-resourcing Clem, but his Zealot-centric army was eventually fatally out-valued by Clem's bio. ***** Feb 3: PiGosaur Cup #17 Both Clem and MaxPax sat the PiGosaur Cup out, leaving herO to snap up the first place prize. Still, the predictability of herO's win was tempered by an unexpected runner-up in Gerald, who took a big 2-1 upset over Solar to earn his finals berth. The Polish Protoss gave Solar a taste of the imba* combo, outlasting a Hydra-Lurker barrage before getting Tempests out in game one, and winning with bruce force Blink Stalkers in game two. Gerald had enough underdog energy in him to win game one of the finals, hitting with a deadly Phoenix-Chargelot timing. However, the series was all herO from there on out, as he deflected proxy tactics in games two and three, and clinched the 3-1 victory with a Glaive-Adept strike in game four (VOD). (In some minor bookkeeping, apparently last week's retro WoL tournament was not the 17th edition of the PiGosaur Cup, and actually its own separate event. This will bother no one except the person posting these updates.) ***** Feb 4-5: OlimoLeague Winter Finals The three-month saga of the revived Olimoleague came to a close in the Winter Finals, gathering the top players from nine weeklies and three monthly finals. In such a 'best of the best' tournament setting, it was only fitting that Clem—arguably the #1 player in StarCraft 2 right now—proved his superiority by taking the ~$2000 first place prize. After piloting his off-race Protoss to a slightly dicey 2-1 win over Cure in the first round, Clem proceeded to go on a TvP rampage with a 2-0 win over Zoun, 3-0 win over Classic, and another 4-0 sweep against Classic in the double-elimination finals. Runner-up Classic had a fine showing where he managed to beat herO twice throughout the bracket (their lower bracket clash finals was an all-in packed, chaotic mess that should appeal to fans who enjoyed the knife-fight era of PvP), but he simply could not dent Clem in any of their clashes. The grand finals are only recommended to Clem fans who enjoy watching any of his beatdowns, or Protoss players who want to glean some info on Stargate openers in PvT (Day 1 VOD - Day 2 VOD) ***** Feb 8: uThermal 2v2 Circuit: #2 uThermal's ambitious 2v2 circuit continued with its second monthly tournament, putting another $1300 up for grabs. The rules were revised this time around, with resource trading barred until the seven-minute mark. This was presumably to bar the resource-fed, mass-Phoenix strategy that powered the MaxPax-Spirit team in the previous tournament, but even rule changes couldn't prevent the red-white duo from Denmark and Poland. MaxPax-Spirit met Trigger-Clem once again in the finals—and after providing a much-improved viewing experience due to the rule changes—claimed the 2v2 crown once again with a 3-2 victory (VOD).
