The sad thing is that you can see they have the players, but it almost looks like they haven't played together offensively. I think I saw 4 times where the US passed the ball out of play where the runner and passer were just completely on different pages. Their central midfield just seems to have no field vision which is only made worse by extremely poor movement from the wide and top players. Their corners are strange too...but their set pieces are dangerous and their defense is tight. They don't look like world champions to me, but you don't have to to win the cup.

Honestly I think Germany-France will be the game of the tournament. They both look really good and whoever wins will be my bet to win the whole thing. I think Germany are/should be favorites, but it will be close.

Found it in brief Finally got this on replay, what a play by Rapinoe (how good has she been? by far the standout player of US). Can't really tell whether onside or not, but I'm guessing on, just by Alex Morgan's pace compared to the defender and she's not that far ahead of her when it cuts to the wide view.

Ya Rapinoe has been absolutely great so far. Too bad we'll miss her next match.

First frame Morgan is visible Yeah that looks like it probably was a good call and it is good that it was, because this would have been a refereeing error and a goalie error within two minutes deciding yet another game. Also wtf where is the Pande hype, England women leading the way.

It is very harsh but the football level is appaling, then you add in the fact every game is played on artificial turf and i cannot take it seriously.

What you say is right, there is tons of stuff that can annoy you, as referred to in that previous post the goalkeeping and refereeing have been terrible. But the quality has improved a lot and there are actually competitive games now instead of just one team dominating the other. You should actually give it a try. Don't start comparing it to men's teams, get a decent stream (run if you see Fox) and watch the Germany France game. If you take it for what it is and the game itself goes as it should it should be entertaining. At least I can stand watching it now instead of consequently ignoring it. Plus when this tournament is over it will once again vanish for 360 days of the year. Sorry if I called you out tho

I dont think football is much different from any other sport in this regard.

Women's hockey is an awesome sport to watch. It truly is a different sport than the men's game since you can't check in it. MUCH faster paced.

Womens Rugby i have never seen, im sure the Americans can give us a view on Basketball? Netball the English version of said sport is pretty interesting and gets pretty heated to be honest haha. Erm other than that the only team i watch womens sports is in the Olympics and again that is mainly track and field events.

It has a decently popular and successful league, whereas soccer's is basically unheard of and I don't think that baseball or hockey have one. Of course, the level of play is still significantly lower than the men's game, which in a sport like basketball, isn't surprising. But as I said, if you want to watch good play in a women's sport, hockey is the game to watch. Oh, and the U.S. are going to have a brutal game against China. They are so incredibly organized defensively and the U.S. is a joke offensively. Combine that with no Rapinoe and that game will be a struggle to even watch.

They use a smaller ball because of smaller hands and play shorter games (40 vs 48 minutes?). Two main criticisms of the WWC have been bad goalkeeping and bad fitness. So shrink the goals (and maybe the pitch) a bit and play 80 minutes like the 17 year olds.

Yea, sports like baseball (softball) and hockey also have different rules for women, and it works out fairly well.

It might be the most successful but that does not equate with "good games" and "interesting to watch." I think the level of play in the WNBA is much much lower than women's soccer.

In 2002 during the world cup someone asked Julie Foudy if the USWNT could compete with the men and she said they regularly practiced against and lost to a local u16 club team in California. You do see some of the players are technically pretty good, but mostly it seems in the women's game even more than the men's that the best athletes rise to the top (players like Akers and Wambach are just physically another dimension above the field). I think its possible that there is a sharper athletic curve for the women due to a smaller pool of players than the men as well. I still enjoy watching the US team play because I have soccer player daughters and a rooting interest...much more interesting than watching Hull play Villa or some such.

While it's not necessarily what I prefer to watch, I largely think technical ability of a team showcases itself by how able the team is to maintain possession while the other team is applying pressure. And similarly, I feel that how badly a team is playing can often be determined by how often they lose possession to little or no pressure. (you're not playing badly just because you lost the ball 3 seconds after getting it vs atletico madrid, but if you lose it 3 seconds after getting it against a chelsea leading 2-0, you might be. ![]()
